David Tennant Quits!

David Tennant is to stand down as Doctor Who, after becoming one of the most popular Time Lords in the history of the BBC science fiction show.
Tennant stepped into the Tardis in 2005, and will leave the role after four special episodes are broadcast next year.
He made the announcement after winning the outstanding drama performance prize at the National Television Awards.
"When Doctor Who returns in 2010 it won't be with me," he said. http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/shared/img/o.gifhttp://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/nol/shared/img/v3/start_quote_rb.gif I don't evnt it to feel like a job, so I want to move on when it still feels exciting and fresh http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/nol/shared/img/v3/end_quote_rb.gif

"Now don't make me cry," he added. "I love this part, and I love this show so much that if I don't take a deep breath and move on now I never will, and you'll be wheeling me out of the Tardis in my bath chair."

The BBC have confirmed the casting of Michelle Ryan in the Planet of the Dead, the first of four Doctor Who specials which will air in 2009.

Ryan, who is best known for her roles as Zoe Slater in EastEnders and Jaime Sommers in the recent remake of Bionic Woman, will play the mysterious Lady Christina de Souza, who joins David Tennant, as the Doctor, on a bus trip which takes a very unexpected detour into danger. She said "I'm a huge fan of Doctor Who and very excited to be joining David Tennant and the Doctor Who team. It is such a fantastic show and I can’t wait to get started!"

British comedy star Lee Evans will also be joining the cast playing a character called Malcolm, whose life becomes connected to the Doctor's under extraordinary circumstances.

Noma Dumezweni returns to the series as Captain Erisa Magambo, last seen helping Rose and Donna save the world in Turn Left.

Executive Producer and writer Russell T Davies said "Michelle is one of the most sought after young actors in the country and we are delighted to announce that she will be joining the team. As always the script is being kept strictly under wraps however we can reveal that Lady Christina is a woman with a mysterious past who's going to have a huge impact on the Doctor! "

The episode will be screened at Easter.

Executives on the TV show hired two £20,000 double deckers which were apparently central to the plot of the Easter special. One was used to shoot scenes with star David Tennant in Cardiff while the other was shipped to Dubai for filming there.

But a crane operator managed to wreck the second 1980 Bristol VR model while unloading it in Dubai docks.

Russell T Davies, the series producer, is reported to have "exploded" when he heard there was no way of getting a replacement in time.

It is believed that he was forced to rip up the script and write a new plotline.

Only last week he revealed the show revolved around the Doctor taking a "bus trip which takes an unexpected detour into danger".

To ship the bus to Dubai would have cost the BBC around £7,000. And production in the Middle East state is costing an estimated £30,000 a week.

The bus has already caused problems with fans disrupting filming in Wales. They kept pressing the buttons at pedestrian crossings, causing the bus to stop.

BBC editors are scrambling to rewrite a Dubai-based episode of Dr Who after the time traveller’s double-decker bus was smashed by a crane operator at Dubai port.

The damage, estimated at tens of thousands of dirhams, has delayed filming of the hit show, which is to base one of four special episodes in Dubai.

While the bus may look like it was attacked by the show’s evil Cybermen, it was an unloading accident that left BBC staff rushing to rewrite the plotline to Dr Who’s Dubai visit.

One person familiar with the bus accident said that the BBC will now make it look as if the bus was crushed by Dr Who’s enemies.

7DAYS was able to gain access to the bus, which is being repaired at AAA service centre near Festival City.

Gordon, a manager at AAA, said that the bus had suffered impact damage and that the garage was awaiting further instructions from the BBC.

The show was due to revolve around a plot in which the time-travelling doctor is zapped to Dubai and faces an “unexpected detour into danger”.

However, the detour will now appear more dangerous than previously anticipated, as his bus’ top deck shows extensive damage.

The left side of the bus has been crushed inwards, windows have been smashed, the frame has been bent and paint has been ripped from the roof.

The incongruous-looking destination board on the front of the bus remained intact, showing that it was destined for ‘Victoria Station in London, via Vauxhall, Oval and Brixton’.

A spokeswoman for a private public relations company that represents the show has declined to comment, saying she could not discuss material for future episodes.

The accident is a minor embarrassment for Dubai tourist officials, who were hoping to promote the city to fans of the show, which is watched by millions of fans from around the world.

It is among the top five highest-grossing BBC shows and is also one of the British state broadcaster’s longest running series.

I never watched this show until recently on pbs...never could see what all the fans saw in it..but have to admit that the guy who plays it now is pretty good. But why don't they have the usual blonde sidekick? I love the chemistry between the two.

Doctor Who role for Timothy Dalton

Former James Bond star Timothy Dalton is to appear in Doctor Who.

The actor, who played James Bond in The Living Daylights and Licence To Kill, will appear as a baddie in one of David Tennant's final episodes.

A Doctor Who insider told The Sun: "Timothy Dalton is a big coup for Doctor Who because he's pretty iconic. He's in the UK right now and is shooting scenes over the next few weeks.

"It's a good gig for him as it will be one of the most memorable episodes yet."

David Tennant is set to play the Time Lord in just three more special episodes before handing over his sonic screwdriver to new Doctor Matt Smith.

Former assistants Billie Piper, Freeman Agyeman and Catherine Tate are all expected to appear and John Simm will also be reprising his role as The Master.

The specials are expected to be screened on BBC1 over Christmas and New Year.

http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/45840000/jpg/_45840965_who_bbc226b.jpg This is Karen Gillan’s biggest role yet

Little-known actress Karen Gillan has been unveiled as the next assistant in Doctor Who.

The 21-year-old will star alongside new Time Lord Matt Smith in the new series, to be broadcast next year.
Gillan has already appeared in the drama, having played a Soothsayer in The Fires Of Pompeii in the last run.

“I am absolutely over the moon at being chosen to play the Doctor’s new companion. - I just can’t wait to get started,” she said.

‘Incredible actor’
“The show is such a massive phenomenon that I can’t quite believe I am going to be a part of it.

“Matt Smith is an incredible actor and it is going to be so much fun to act alongside him,” she added.

Head of Drama, BBC Wales, Piers Wenger said she brings “energy and excitement” to the role.

“When she auditioned alongside Matt we knew we had something special,” he said.

Writer and executive producer Steven Moffat said they saw some “amazing actresses” but Gillan “walked through the door the game was up”.

He described her as “funny, and clever, and gorgeous, and sexy. Or Scottish, which is the quick way of saying it”.

“A generation of little girls will want to be her. And a generation of little boys will want them to be her too,” he added.

Gillan, from Inverness, developed a love for acting after attending several youth theatre groups and taking part in various school productions.

At the age of 16, she decided to pursue her career further and left school to study acting at Edinburgh’s Telford College.

She went on to secure a place at the Italia Conti drama school in London and landed her first role in the Scottish drama Rebus.

Parts in Channel 4’s Stacked, The Kevin Bishop Show and James Nesbitt’s forthcoming film Outcast followed, but the role in Doctor Who is her first high profile to date.

New preview pictures and promo clip for 4.16: The Waters of Mars, unveiled.

The BBC Press Office have released two preview pictures and a promotional clip for the Autumn Doctor Who Special; 4.16: The Waters of Mars.

David Tennant returns as The Doctor in The Waters of Mars, the second of four Doctor Who specials being screened on BBC One this year. He is joined by his cleverest and most strong-minded companion yet, Adelaide Brooke, played by acclaimed British actress Lindsay Duncan.

Adelaide is head of Mars Base and doesn't take kindly to an uninvited appearance by The Doctor. Peter O'Brien, star of Neighbours, Flying Doctors and Casualty, also guest stars as Ed, Adelaide's second in command.

Further casting confirms Alan Ruscoe as Andy Stone (pictured).

Production started today on the new series of Doctor Who in which BBC One viewers will meet the 11th Doctor and his companion for the very first time.

The latest incarnation of the iconic character is played by Matt Smith (Party Animals).

Upon arriving on set in Cardiff, for his first day of filming, Smith commented: "I feel very privileged and proud to be part of this iconic show.

"The scripts are brilliant and working alongside Karen, Steven and the rest of the crew is an inspiration because their work ethic and passion for the show is so admirable.

"I'm excited about the future and all the brilliant adventures I get to go on as the Doctor."

Accompanying The Doctor on his further adventures in time is a new companion, Amy Pond, played by Scottish actress Karen Gillan (The Kevin Bishop Show), who will first meet The Doctor in episode one of the new series.

New show-runner and long-running Doctor Who fan Steven Moffat has developed this series and, as Lead Writer and Executive Producer, will be responsible for the overall creative direction of the show, as well as plot and character arcs.

Moffat's previous episodes of Doctor Who, including the BAFTA-winning episode Blink, have garnered widespread acclaim from critics and fans alike.

He commented: "And here it is, the big moment – the new Doctor, and his new best friend.

"And here's me, with the job I wanted since I was seven. 40 years to here! If I could go back in time and tell that little boy that one day all this would happen, he'd scream, call for his mum, and I'd be talking to you now from a prison cell in 1969. So probably best not then.

"Matt and Karen are going to be incredible, and Doctor Who is going to come alive on Saturday nights in a whole new way – and best of all, somewhere out there, a seven-year-old is going to see them, fall in love, and start making a 40-year plan..."

Piers Wenger, Executive Producer and Head of Drama, BBC Wales, added: "The scripts for the new series are every bit as funny, thrilling, scary and imaginative as you'd expect from the man who brought us The Empty Child and Blink.

"There's a strange and perfect alchemy between Steven and Matt Smith and the next few months are going to be riveting as that relationship starts to emerge on screen.

"Steven always says he's been waiting to do this job since he was seven. But it's actually the Doctor who has been waiting for him."

The new series follows three Doctor Who specials starring David Tennant which will transmit later this year.

Ben Stephenson, Controller, BBC Drama Commissioning, says: "I am thrilled that a whole new generation of children will forever say that their Doctor was the wonderful Matt Smith."

The series was co-commissioned by Ben Stephenson and Jay Hunt, Controller, BBC One, and will be produced by Tracie Simpson (Doctor Who) and Peter Bennett (Torchwood).

Steven Moffat is Lead Writer and Executive Producer (Jekyll) with Piers Wenger and Beth Willis (Ashes To Ashes) also Executive Producing.

Filming is taking place in Cardiff until March 2010. Thirteen x 45-minute drama produced by BBC Wales for BBC One
