Media Molecule, the makers of the wildly addictive Rag Doll Kung Fu, now brings its talents to PlayStation 3. Given the cheeky working title The Next Big Thing™, LittleBigPlanet is a game that is also a game making studio.
The LittleBigPlanet experience starts with players learning about their character's powers to interact physically with the environment. There are obstacles to explore, bits and pieces to collect and puzzles to solve – requiring a combination of brains and collaborative teamwork. As players begin to explore, their creative skills will grow and they will be ready to start creating and modifying their surroundings – the first step to sharing them with the whole community. Creativity is part of the gameplay experience and playing is part of the creative experience. Players can make their world as open or as secretive to explore as they like. When it's ready, they can invite anyone within the LittleBigPlanet community to come and explore their patch -- or can go and explore everybody else's.

Amazon got the shaft in terms of pre-order bonuses. If we pre-order from Gamestop we'll get a Kratos costume. Amazon got a small Brady's Game Guide.... yeah..

There is another costume (Nariko from Heavenly Sword), a sticker book, and a small purse/pouch still to be assigned to retailers as a pre-order bonus. Frankly, Gamestop gets mine. I think they should have combined all this into a collector's edition, it would have made a bit more sense.

Looks like it's Best Buy with the Nariko pre-order. I realized if you wanted, you could just pre-order from gamestop, have them give you the code, then pre-order from somewhere else then either get your $5 back or put it towards another game. That is if you're crazy over deciding between 2+ pre-order gifts.

New gameplay out of PAX.

i think i'd like to create boobie traps that destroy other players' characters. a gauntlet of sorts that doesn't advertise itself as such. and the path would end w/ an octagon and a shooting gallery above it, in case there are any survivors

this game looks fucking incredible. the european beta has started. they're giving out fucking beta codes like they're candy... mm -- what about us across the pond?! i want to beta test! shit... as a software developer i'm actually qualified.

anyways, from reading all of the shit over at ps3forums.com all those guys that got beta codes are happier than a bunch of faggots in a penis tree with this beta. media molecule says that the beta they're playing with is an old build... shit. i didn't originally even know about this game until i bought the ps3, now i want it. the concept isn't so much ground-breaking, but it appears that mm got the execution down to an art form. and after seeing some of the sackboy/girl designs and level demos i have to say... i want this fucking game. it'd be a great way to get the family involved in something that's not just about wasting brain cells.

I'm in the beta. Create is way too addicting. I kind of wanted to go outside over the weekend... Took me a bit to wrap my head around the tools. Lots of trial and error. Rewind function is a god send in this game.

User made levels = awesomeness. Some real nice ones out there already. To think it's only going to get better as people get the hang of these tools and really let their imagination fly.

fucking incredible.

and then some.

gamestop/eb: kratos costume
best buy: nariko costume

game guide: amazon
sticker book: ??, but who gives a shit?

there will not be a version that contains all, however i've been reading that the codes used to dload the nariko/kratos costumes can be used five times (presumably for five reinstalls of the game).

i'm buying from best buy (my gf wants nariko), so i'll be willing to share for those who would like to do the same.

To our Canadian fans – Apologies for forgetting about you – we didn’t have details until today, but we have good news and ‘gooder’ news. First the good news – there will be 2* pre-order campaigns in Canada. The ‘gooder’ news is that the 2* items are Kratos SackBoy and Nariko SackGirl.

So...regarding Kratos SackBoy @ Canada, he'll be waiting for you at your local EB Games & GameStop stores (north of the boarder).

Stay tuned for more info on Nariko SackGirl when we make our announcements on the site.

*In the current internet age, we’re pretty sure you could get the BradyGames digital mini-guide if you wanted to.

actually, this is the final word on the pre-order extras...
With about two weeks left until the big launch, we wanted to finalize the info for pre-orders and sum it up for you in one nice neat package...

First off, the main reason you want to pre-order is to make sure you're online with us for the free, limited edition, week one only, 'I was there for Launch' SpaceSuit SackBoy costume. This is a fair and final warning - we don't want to see any sob stories on our News Site / Forums, and we promise not to give you the "I told you so" line (but we'll be thinking it on every post) :)

Secondly, with so many great pre-order items from our retail partners, why wouldn't you pre-order to bet bonus stuff.

From stickers, pouches, strategy guides, and in-game costumes, there is something for everyone. Please feel free to visit our retailer sites to get more details...

media molecule are suggesting that they may retain the user-created levels for the live launched game, meaning that the levels created thus far (and painstakingly, judging from ps3forums.com) will not have been created in vain.

i'm not going to lie: i'm liking how media molecule are talking directly to gamers and immediately incorporating their thoughts/opinions into policy. the same way that codemasters are developing the new formula 1 game by talking with fans on their website. i hope to see more game development evolve into this.

Indeed.

I know some people who put a lot of time into some of the levels out there. Would of been a shame to see it all go to waste.

On the main floor at the Tokyo Game Show (http://tgs.1up.com/) today Media Molecule co-founder Alex Evans let slip that all the Little Big Planet (http://www.1up.com/do/gameOverview?cId=3157796) user-created levels we've been seeing from the beta are in fact going to be making the transition into the full final game.

i pre-ordered from the website, so i'll be getting my card at the same time as my game on tuesday.

the real reason for the five uses is for reinstallation; i haven't heard that that notice would be included on teh card, but rather they posted it on their website somewhere.

The European delay of LittleBigPlanet we mentioned earlier has blossomed into a worldwide recall of the game due to passages from the Islamic holy text Qur'an being included in the background music in one of the levels.
"During the review process prior to the release of LittleBigPlanet, it has been brought to our attention that one of the background music tracks licensed from a record label for use in the game contains two expressions that can be found in the Qur'an," admitted the company in a statement. "We have taken immediate action to rectify this and we sincerely apologise for any offence that this may have caused."
Yesterday a reader sent us a link to a music file containing the two offending phrases, which can be found here. (http://mt14.quickshareit.com/share/preview/soundclip22503c0.wav) Hit the jump for the translation of the offending phrases.
The words are:
1- In the 18th second: "كل نفس ذائقة الموت" ("kollo nafsin tha'iqatol mawt", literally: 'Every soul shall have the taste of death').
2- Almost immediately after, in the 27th second: "كل من عليها فان" ("kollo man alaiha fan", literally: 'All that is on earth will perish').
Thanks to NSider for providing the link and translation.
We'll keep you updated as we hear more on how this recall effects release dates.

Yesterday we received an email in tips from Nsider on behalf of True-Gaming.net (http://www.true-gaming.net/home/) that was sent to Media Molecule and Sony regarding the Qu'ran passages in LittleBigPlanet's music that resulted in the worldwide recall (http://kotaku.com/5065076/littlebigplanet-faces-worldwide-recall-for-quran-references)of the title just a week before release. the email explains the passages and goes on to request that they be removed from the title.
I asked many of my friends online and offline and they heard the exact same thing that I heard easily when I played that part of the track. Certain Arabic hardcore gaming forums are already discussing this, so we decided to take action by emailing you before this spreads to mainstream attention. We Muslims consider the mixing of music and words from our Holy Quran deeply offending. We hope you would remove that track from the game immediately via an online update, and make sure that all future shipments of the game disk do not contain it.
Hit the jump for the full text of the email, which very well may have been the catalyst for the delay of one of the biggest games of the holiday season.

While playing your latest game, "LittleBigPlanet" in the first level of the third world in the game (titled "Swinging Safari"), I have noticed something strange in the lyrics of the music track of the level. When I listened carefully, I was surprised to hear some very familiar Arabic words from the Quran. You can listen to part of the track here:

We would also like to mention that this isn't the first time something like this happened in videogames. Nintendo's 1998 hit "Zelda: Ocarina of Time" contained a musical track with islamic phrases, but it was removed in later shipments of the game after Nintendo was contacted by Muslim organizations. Last year, Capcom's "Zack & Wiki" and Activision's "Call of Duty 4" also contained objectionable material offensive to Muslims that was spotted before the release of the final games, and both companies thankfully removed the content.
We hope you act immediately to avoid any confusion and unnecessary controversy, and we thank you for making such an amazing game.
Regards,
NSider

Here's the full letter. I didn't realize that Muslims took such offense to The Quran in music, and I assume they always have since the creation of the Quran. I also didn't know that The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time did the same thing (among others), and now I'm wondering if I got one of the unedited copies. All I remember them changing was the color of ganondorf's blood from red to green in later editions. He still bleeds red in mine.

Entertainment company Sony has postponed the global release of a much- anticipated video game because of concerns that it may offend Muslims.

Copies of LittleBigPlanet are being recalled from shops worldwide after it emerged that a background music track contained two phrases from the Koran.

Sony says it apologises for any offence caused, and that a modified version is due to be released next month.

The game is expected to be a hit for the Playstation 3 games console.
A contributor to an online games forum reported the presence of the phrases from the Koran, adding that mixing music and words from Islam's most holy text could be considered deeply offensive by Muslims.
Eighteen months ago, Sony apologised to the Church of England after setting scenes in a violent video game inside Manchester Cathedral.
On that occasion the game was not withdrawn.

LittleBigPlanet, created by developer Media Molecule, has been described as a game about making games.

A platform title, it lets gamers built their own playground levels and then swap them with other players over the PlayStation Network.

Everything that can be seen in LittleBigPlanet can also be created by gamers - from textures, characters, to objects and levels.

What's the deal with everyone but Matt Stone and Trey Parker having a vagina when it comes to Islam?

Regards,
yasser

Edit: So now instead of coming out on October 24th, it looks to be released on November 14th.

I agree, it's stupid to make apologies and delay the release. But a further question, why include phrases from the Koran in the background music for a children's game?

Edit: Especially those phrases. Something tells me someone did this on purpose. Seeing what the phrases are make me think Sony made the right call.

FUCK! i just put my fucking pre-order in. i honestly wouldn't be surprised if horseshit like this actually hurt the sales of the game more than helped it. there is such a thing as bad publicity, and if anything was going to do it for this game this fucking retarded bullshit would be it.

you'd think sony might have hired a competent music director that might have paid attention to this happy horseshit, and not selected a track for the soundtrack that might have caught the collective notice of beta testers, directors, reviewers, etc. someone's head should roll for this shit.

furthermore, who's got sand in their fucking clit over a video game's soundtrack? oversensitive fucking idiots.

Yeah we brought this up in the LittleBigPlanet thread as well.

Here's a copy of the letter addressed to Sony:

Edit: So now instead of coming out on October 24th, it looks to be released on November 14th.

after reading this i'm going to have to change my standpoint with regards to oversensitive fucking idiots.

instead, i'd just prefer that sony tally up what this worldwide delay will cost them and then figure out the person responsible... take it out of his pay. if he can't immediately pay, take it from his family. additionally, take a poll of 1000 people... do statistical analysis to determine how many purchases were lost because of this shit... add that on to the bill.

also, i'd like to have a shot at drop-kicking the offending programmer in the throat.

You've probably heard about the recent controversy (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3170727) surrounding Little Big Planet (http://www.1up.com/do/gameOverview?cId=3157796) and a song featuring lyrics taken from the Quran -- after all, it's the reason many eager gamers don't have the game in their hands at this very moment. The whole issue began when concerned Muslim gamers alerted Sony that the song may offend some members of their religion. Sony, probably still feeling the sting from the Church of England controversy, decided to delay the game to strip the song out and avoid a potential backlash. Well, prepare to have your head spun a little, as the leader of Muslim group has now spoken out against Sony's decision. Speaking to Edge (http://www.edge-online.com/features/muslim-group-condemns-lbp-%E2%80%9Ccensorship%E2%80%9D), M. Zuhdi Jasser, M.D., president of the non-profit American Islamic Forum for Democracy, expressed his opposition to this form of censorship:
"Muslims cannot benefit from freedom of expression and religion and then turn around and ask that anytime their sensibilities are offended that the freedom of others be restricted. The free market allows for expression of disfavor by simply not purchasing a game that may be offensive. But to demand that it be withdrawn is predicated on a society which gives theocrats who wish to control speech far more value than the central principle of freedom of expression upon which the very practice and freedom of religion is based. "...We [the AIFD] do not endorse any restriction whatsoever on the release of this videogame but would only ask those with concerns to simply choose not to buy it. We would hope that the producer?s decision not be made in any way out of fear but rather simply based upon freedom of expression and the free market."
It's nice to know that there are two completely different views on this issue coming from similar groups of people. Still, let's hope Sony doesn't recall the recall, if only for our sanity's sake.

It is definitely 'cutesy' in that way, but doesn't compare gameplay-wise at all. I thought it felt like a Nintendo style game. My girlfriend liked it, and she plays games like that.

anyone else pre-order this? i'm willing to trade a single use of my best buy-preorder nariko code for a single-use of a kratos code.

also, for those who own the game... impressions? thoughts? opinions?

nuclearjew: i bought the game specifically so that i could play it with my son and gf. it's cutesy but only insofar as you make it. it's actually quite ambiguous, but the beauty is that gender identities are automatic depending on how you decorate your sackboy/girl. for example: my gf got the nariko costume but only used the hair portion of it. the second the hair went on the sackperson began flipping her hair back and taking on other gender mannerisms. take the hair off, it's a generic sackperson again.

my gf loves playing other people's levels, and there are some talented people out there with too much fucking time on their hands. i'm actually in the process of learning to build my first level. for those collecting stickers/objects/etc.: even if you don't want to create a level do the building tutorials anyways... you'll get a fuckton of stickers and shit. and the narrator is badass anyways.

it's tough to go home and even start this game without burning through hours... just playing the mm-created levels is addictive. and once you start collecting items you'll want to do each level proper (collect all items/don't die/get all points) which burns even more time. and what's amazing is that the replay value is off the fucking charts. i haven't put in gt5p or f1ce since i got this game.

I got this game yesterday because it seemed like one my girlfriend would like more than me, but I'd still get some time in on it. Since I got it she hasn't played once, because I've been on it pretty nonstop. I kind of wish I hadn't gotten it now because I have to work 11 straight days in a row, and at 9 hours a day I'm just going to be fucking thinking of the game.

It probably took me an hour to get over pressing L2 and R2 and making Sackboy do hip thrusts at the camera.

http://media.1up.com/media?id=3644886&type=lg (http://www.1up.com/do/media?cId=3157796&sec=IMAGES)
It seems Guitar Hero World Tour (http://www.1up.com/do/gameOverview?cId=3167821) isn't the only game dealing with copyright infringements (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3171201). As Kotaku reports (http://kotaku.com/5081159/lbp-levels-getting-moderated-out-of-existence), complaints are spreading across the official Little Big Planet (http://www.1up.com/do/gameOverview?cId=3157796) forum, with players' arguing that their custom levels are being "moderated" -- or, to use less euphemistic language, "deleted forevermore" -- without warning or much explanation from Media Molecule. But there seems to be one common thread tying together many of the deleted levels: use of copyrighted materials. "This just happened to tons of levels in what seems like a matter of minutes, including my own level 'Failure To Launch,'" wrote one user in a Little Big Workshop thread (http://forums.littlebigworkshop.com/lbp/board/message?board.id=pod&thread.id=214&view=by_date_ascending&page=1). "By the trend I see from the levels I can no longer play from my recent levels on my planet, it's all about copyright. Some levels I've seen [that are] now unplayable due to moderation: Pacman, Batman, and Scrubs related level."
Indeed, these players have had to piece together this "trend," as one of the bigger problems is a lack of explanation from Media Molecule when a level is deleted. "We're reviewing the moderating system currently to provide better feedback on why levels are moderated," a Media Molecule developer later wrote in that same thread. "Primarily, any level that is reported using the grief tool will be checked over by a moderator, at which point they'll examine it in line with the [End User License Agreement]. If a level is found to be in violation of the EULA it will be moderated and you'll receive a message to that effect. We're moving towards a system where additional information is given, however for the time being if you don't want your level moderating avoid anything unsuitable for users of all ages and copyright content."
Another problem with Media Molecule's system is that it doesn't give a user a chance to change whatever copyrighted (or otherwise delete-worthy) material exists in their level in order to keep the rest of the level online; the whole thing simply gets deleted entirely, and users can't alter and re-host them. This has already spurred at least one user to figure out a workaround (http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=littlebigplanet&thread.id=189675), explaining that you can copy a created level to another slot of your "My Moon" page, and host the original version. If that version then gets deleted, you'll still have a second version to alter and try to re-host.
While it's understandable that copyrighted materials would be barred from use in players' levels, the main problem here seems to be a lack of consistency and fairness -- you can imagine how frustrating it could be to spend hours working on a perfectly envisioned level, only to have it deleted without warning because, as one player wrote, they had a Metal Gear Solid (http://www.1up.com/do/gameOverview?cId=3140656) character appearing in it. Hopefully Media Molecule will come through soon, and get a better "moderating" system in place.
And really, even when it does come to the use of copyrighted materials, you kind of have to wonder: If Burnout Paradise (http://www.1up.com/do/gameOverview?cId=3153260) can not (wink, wink) add the Back to the Future Time Machine (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3171198) into their game, surely there can be some leniency in what can and can't be used in Little Big Planet? We imagine a level containing the image of a vaguely familiar super spy wearing a bandana and eye patch and smoking a cigarette, with a large sign over his head that helpfully identifies him as "Not Solid Snake."

Kerjack

that fucking blows, actually. and yeah, i'm pretty sure a shit ton of this stuff would fall under fair use. the super mario bros. level was pretty sweet.

but to be honest we can't bitch to much. i'm sure even media molecule is discovering some of these things themselves; nothing's going to be perfect immediately.

Metal Gear Solid Little Big Planet
http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/kotaku/2008/12/mgs4sack.jpg

43861.html

Video was hilarious. $6 for 4 cosutmes, and another $6 for the metal gear solid Level pack (and a 5th costume).

In Japan, Santa Claus does not have a beard — just a mustache, and an eyepatch. Oh yes; your dreams are almost true. This Christmas, MGS4 and LittleBigPlanet become one. The "Metal Gear Solid 4 Costume Pack" - as first spotted the other day (http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/kotaku/2008/12/mgs4sack.jpg) - will be available to Japanese PlayStation 3 owners with working internet connections and the patience to have actually set up a PlayStation Network account on next Thursday, December 25th, 2008.
The four costumes in the pack are Old Snake, Raiden (aka "The Original Sack Boy"), Meryl, and Screaming Mantis.
The costumes can be purchased in a pack for 600 yen, or individually for 200 yen each. Hey, this calculator must be broken, because it's telling me that a Japanese company is giving me a bargain.
That's not all — for just 800 yen more, you can get a "Metal Gear Solid 4 Stage Pack", containing "more than 60" stickers, "more than 10" objects, "more than 10" create materials, and "3" (no "more than") BGM tracks.
Hey, that's not bad! Now you can make a Metal Gear Solid 4-themed LittleBigPlanet level, turn your Imagination Hat on, and pretend that you're playing Metal Gear Solid 4 instead of LittleBigPlanet! Just make sure to not include any of the award-winning Metal Gear Solid 4 dialogue in your text boxes, because that could get you moderated into oblivion.
Cynical as I may be re: all this, man, I kinda want that Old Snake. I mean, not as "DLC" — I kinda want him for real. I'd sit him on my lap and ride the bus all the way around town.
