Will he ever live up to the hype?

I understand that he'll never be considered a "bust" perse, but is he ever going to play at the level that everyone thought he would?

The man runs like Pat Ewing did when he was in his 30s, and seems to have Yao type injury prevention.

Discuss.

That doesn't make sense.

Vince isn't an injury issue, he's a head case.

My girlfriend's family is already calling him a "bust" and a "fifty million dollar mistake". I won't go that far since the KID is only TWENTY but this is a very discouraging beginning to his career. He is going to be dominating once he can get on the court at 100%, when that will happen, no one knows. :(

I mean a guy who gets injured all of the time and has done squat in the playoffs.

The hype of being a big man in the post averaging maybe 15/10 a night?

If he stays healthy, how can he not?

If the "hype" is that he is the next Shaq, then I think the expected numbers are closer to 25/10 when Oden hits his prime. That's probably way too optimistic.

I don't think people expect that much out of him. I think they just see a first overall pick sitting for one year and 4 weeks, and think bust.
If he just plays his game, I think he can develop into a 20/10 guy... easily.

he's the next Olowakandi

Coming out of OSU he was expected to anchor a team for the next decade.

In Portland he is expected to be the player they build that team around, averaging probably 20 and 12 for the next 12 to 14 years.

I think 15 and 10 is what you expect from a bust 1st overall bigman.

People who expect better numbers in the NBA than out of college are ridiculous.

He can definitely be an anchor and a man to build the team around with a good core around him (Roy and Aldridge).
They have the makings of a great core if they stay healthy.

Nobody up here thought he'd be a 20/12 guy. We just thought he'd be a 15-18/10-12 guy who can play tough D and be a presence down low that you have to respect. I hoped for a Shaq type of prowess downlow on the boards and intimidation to the opposing offense. I never expected anything like that on the offensive end.

He's going to get 75% of his points of dunks and put backs. He has very little offensive moves. He'll need alot of coaching to be considered an offensive player.

One day he will shine. He just needs to stop being injury prone.

Sister met him, and not just a "hi", he knew her roommate and he stayed at their apartment last spring for a few days. Nice guy I hear. I hope he shines one day.

I think he'll be a 17-10 type guy, but with above average defense, which could carry him a long way. I don't know if that's living up to his hype or not, but I don't think he's the next Shaq or anything.
