sounds like win win for me as a share holder in both companies.

Giving a monetary amount of profit without giving it as a percent of expenditures is sort of misleading. A larger company is going to generate a larger amount of profit strictly by sheer size. Is Exxons profit percentage grossly out of whack with other companies?
If a company makes 14.8 billion on a 5% profit margin is that worse than a company that makes 5 million on a 25% profit margin?

i believe it was 10%, so they had something like 140+ billion in sales.

Actually it is only 1 company and if you own shares then you probably aren't very happy right now seeing as how they have been steadily dropping over the last year from 95 a share to below 75.

yes, but i purchased shares in the major oil companies back in 02 and do the DRIPs program with them. My 'portfolio' is meager, but I cover a wide variety of companies. Oil, pharm, utilities, retail. Mutual funds as well.

The oil companies are very poorly managed. My father has worked in the industry for 35 years and I have worked in the same for 4 years of my life. If you ever worked for them you would see the ridiculous spending that these companies pass off as beneficial for profit margins. I have seen conoco phillips trash 200,000$ worth of safety gear because it was not used for 3 years. Just because they did not use it they threw it away. They wouldn't even consider the fact of trying to sell it because it would be a liability to them.

how is that bad management? sounds like a clear case of a company avoiding litigation due to the lack of tort reform in this country.

I'm surprised about this earnings report too. With the price of a gallon of gas recently, will their earnings be lower for the next quarter? They've probably broke their record for the year anyway.
