Prolific novelist and "ER" creator Michael Crichton has unexpectedly died after a private battle with cancer. He was 66.

Known for his best-selling books like "Jurassic Park," and its sequel "The Lost World," which were made into a successful movie franchise, Crichton has sold more than 150 million books worldwide. Many of his books, including "The Andromeda Strain," "Congo," "Twister," "Terminal Man," and "Disclosure," were also turned into films.

congo fucking sucked.

yes, yes it did.

his later work read like a screen play, and bad ones at that. but his early stuff from the 70s, 80s, and early 90s was great sci fi.

There are books that force you to use your imagination. Then there are books that depend entirely on your imagination. Sphere was one of the latter.

Jurassic Park was my favourite book/movie as a child. I was dinosaur mad as a kid so his two books were like crack for me.

RIP Mike.

Same here. I enjoyed both of the Jurassic Parks immensely. The blurbs on Chaos Theory in those books probably lead me towards the path of mathematics.

RIP Mr. Crichton, RIP.

Any of you ever read his autobiography "Travels"? I found that quite interesting as well.

In EVERY one of his books, his research and inclusion of such detailed, interesting and accurate scientific facts just floored me.

I liked how accessible the information was. It didn't seem like it was over your head when he was talking about quantum physics.

Wow. Fuck. Jurassic Park was and always will be one of my favorite books. It's one of the first books I really 'got into' as a kid. Andromeda Strain as well.

But to be fair, not like any of us would know.

Well he cited his work pretty clearly as well, so I guess we COULD if we had the initiative.

And yes, imo he very clearly and descriptively explained the technology and science behind his books but it was just short of getting in too deep, thus making the books a boring read for my "simple" mind. hah

Prey was a little scaremongery but I did like the technology descriptions.

Well shit. What will people in airports read? Weird timing because I've been checking his books out for having something to read during class. I'm going for Eaters of the Dead or Timeline..I've pretty much read all of his books. I liked his books since I was twelve and his books actually got me into reading...

I think he took some fun in pissing off mainstream science by mangling stuff and taking it seriously at the same time. And then he can get pretty one-sided on the issue of Global Warming. That caused some dissention from State of Fear.

Jurassic park was awesome. After I read it I thought the film sucked. So did Sphere.

State of Fear was awesome. His books always felt like you were learning something while reading something completely far out. Definitely a big loss.

I wasn't happy with any of the movies I've seen. I know that many movies differ from their paper counterparts however with Crichton they seem to just snap that line. . .

Wonder if we'll see one following "Travels" now. .Hehe

that HAVEN'T been made into movies. . .? That's a bit tougher. I really do like his autobiography "Travels" which hasn't become a movie. .but not really like his other books either. But most have been made into movies. Personally I really liked Timeline (NOT the movie)

State of Fear might be one of my favorite all time books. I also liked Disclosure and Rising Sun.

Prey was a little Hokey, and Airframe, while interesting, couldn't have been more boring.

I never saw the movie Congo, but from what I have read here, it looks like I won't waste my time...

It can be if he produced alot of good material. Problem is with every great work he made, he wrote an equally not so good story.
