I carry a gun and a knife. I use the knife to open boxes, cut string, sharpen pencils, and other such things. Were it deadly enough, I wouldn't carry the pistol as well.

A stab wound has a direct route. A gunshot will travel a distance until the enegy is expelled. I once shot a deer in the low shoulder and the actual kill shot went through it spine just short of the hind quarters.
