CC Sabathia | Brewers (http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=mil) | Interested: Yankees (http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=nyy), Giants (http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=sfo)?
The auction for free agent CC Sabathia (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=4553) will include the Giants, according to a report in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. The newspaper cited an agent familiar with the situation who expects the Giants to make an offer to Sabathia. The left-hander is a native of Vallejo, California near San Francisco and has told friends that he "likes the idea" of playing in his home state. The Journal Sentinel cited another agent who expects the Angels to enter the Sabathia sweepstakes at some point. The Brewers still hope to retain Sabathia, who was acquired at midseason and led them to a wild card berth in 2008. Milwaukee opened the bidding with a reported five-year $100 million offer. Various reports claim the Yankees tried to blow away the competition with a six-year, $140 million offer. Brewers general manager Doug Melvin has yet to make a counter offer. "I'm not at that point yet," Melvin told the Journal Sentinel. "We're still waiting at this point. The free agent market is always slow to develop." Another possible suitor is the Dodgers. The Star Ledger in New Jersey reported that Los Angeles is considering making a six-year offer to Sabathia worth $110 million to $120 million.

The newspaper said that the deal is expected to be finalized pending a physical on Thursday. Miller was 2-0 with a 4.15 ERA in 68 appearances for the Americal League champion Rays last season

Jake Peavy | Padres (http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=sdg)
Padres general manager Kevin Towers told MLB.com that the Cubs remain interested in Jake Peavy (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=5019), but the website added that Chicago is likely to back off any deal for the ace right-hander. Powers said Wednesday night that the Cubs "still have interest" even after Chicago signed Ryan Dempster (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=3845) to a four-year, $52 million contract. A source, however, told MLB.com that the Cubs went into the offseason with the intention of signing Dempster or acquiring Peavy, "but could not afford both pitchers."

The Yankees have had conversations with the Brewers about acquiring outfielder Mike Cameron (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=3331), according to the Star Ledger in New Jersey. The Brewers recently picked up Cameron's $10 million option for 2009. The Star Ledger said that Brewers GM Doug Melvin had conversations with the Yankees at the recent GM meetings. The newspaper added that any possible deal is on hold until the Brewers are sure that they can't sign free agent pitcher CC Sabathia (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=4553).

Rafael Furcal | Dodgers (http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=lad) | Interested: Athletics (http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=oak)?
The San Francisco Chronicle reported that the Athletics continue to pursue shortstop Rafael Furcal (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=4243), who missed most of last season following back surgery. Furcal would not require draft picks if he is signed, which is an added incentive to the Athletics. The newspaper added that the Athletics have seen Furcal's medical records and have been assured that he has fully recovered.n Furcal played for the Dodgers last season.

Ohman is free agent after going 4-1 with a 3.68 ERA in 83 appearances last season. "It was a real offer, an offer intended to make me feel like they wanted me back," Ohman told the Atlanta JC. The newspaper said Ohman has received interest from at least 10 teams and expects to make a decision in December.

A.J. Burnett | Blue Jays (http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=tor)
The Yankees and Red Sox apparently are set to square off for the services of free agent pitcher A.J. Burnett (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=4153). The New York Daily News reported that the Red Sox plan to be "a major player" in the pursuit of Burnett. In addition, Newsday said that the Red Sox have become "serious competitors" to land the right-hander. The New York Post reported Tuesday that the Yankees were preparing an offer to Burnett that could be worth $80 million over five years. Darek Braunecker, the agent for Burnett, told the Daily News in a text message that "talks are progressing on a number of fronts." According to Newsday, a half dozen teams are in contention for Burnett: the Yankees, Red Sox, Blue Jays, Braves, Phillies and Orioles. Burnett left $24 million on the table to opt out of the final two years of his original five-year deal with the Blue Jays. The Blue Jays are believed to have offered a four-year, $54 million deal to keep him.

Nationals (http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=was)?
Nationals president Stan Kasten is playing down speculation regarding the pursuit of free agent first baseman Mark Teixeira (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=4937). Kasten told the Washington Post that the courting of the Maryland-born Teixeria is "way ahead of us here." The Washington Post reported last week that the Nationals were preparing an offer for Teixeira and would be "competitive" in the bidding. The comments by Kasten, who declined to characterize the Nats' interest in Teixeira, comes one day after the Baltimore Sun reported that the Orioles have begun their pursuit of Teixeira. The Orioles contacted Teixeira's agent, Scott Boras, on Friday, the first day clubs were officially allowed to talk to free agents. "We have had discussions with his representative," Orioles president Andy MacPhail told the Sun. The newspaper reported that no offer was made, and that Boras indicated he would "get back to the Orioles when he wanted to talk specifics."
http://assets.espn.go.com/i/teamlogos/mlb/med/trans/hou.gif (http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=hou)Astros may unload Valverde, Wigginton
The Astros may be interested in trading closer Jose Valverde (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=5504) and third baseman Ty Wigginton (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=5176) in the next few weeks, according to the Houston Chronicle. The Chronicle reported that the Astros are not interested in slicing payroll, but hope to keep it in the $100 million range. "We're not cutting the payroll," a club source told the newspaper. With the contract of Carlos Lee (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=4000) jumping from $12.5 million to $18.5 million, the Astros would need to find savings elsewhere. Both Valverde and Wigginton made less than $5 million last year. Even if their salaries doubled through arbitration, the Chronicle reported that the pair would still be "relative bargains" if put on the trade market.

The Chicago Cubs (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=chn) are interested in acquiring outfielder Mark Teahen (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=6011) from the Royals, the Kansas City Star reported. Cubs manager Lou Piniella recently cited the acquisition of a left-handed bat as one of the team's offseason priorities. The Kansas City Star reported that the pursuit could now intensify now that the Cubs have signed free agent pitcher Ryan Dempster (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=3845). The newspaper reported that the Cubs remain interested in free agent outfielder Raul Ibanez (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=3504), but are also "searching for low-cost alternatives." The Cubs would then be open to Teahen, who is projected to make $3-million plus either through arbitration or a negotiated deal. The Kansas City Star added that the Cubs are interested in outfielder David DeJesus (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=5799), but the Royals would prefer to keep him.

Pedro Martinez (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=2717) still has "a lot of baseball left in him" and would like to finish his career with the Mets, his agent told the New York Daily News. The agent, Fernando Cuza, said that the Mets remain the top choice for his 37-year-old client, but New York is one of many possible suitors. "He's not ready to retire. He had a tough year, first with the injury and then with the death of his dad," Cuza told the Daily News. "But Pedro's put all of that behind him. He's very competitive and wants to finish his career strong." The Daily News said that the Mets have not ruled out bringing back the three-time Cy Young Award winner, "assuming his contract demands are modest." Martinez was 5-6 in an injury-plagued 2008 season. He was in the final year of a four-year, $54 million contract.

Mike Mussina (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=2557) plans to make a decision on whether he'll retire or return to pitch in 2009 "by the end of the week,'' agent Arn Tellem said in an e-mail to ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick Mussina, who turns 40 on Dec. 8, posted his first career 20-win season in 2008, but he's been contemplating retirement to spend more time with his family. The Yankees, who are pursuing CC Sabathia (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=4553) and at least one other starter through free agency, are also waiting on a resolution of Andy Pettitte (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=3171)'s situation. The Boston Globe is reporting the Red Sox are considering a possible deal that would send Julio Lugo (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=4290) to the Detroit Tigers (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=det) for pitchers Nate Robertson (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=5336) and Dontrelle Willis (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=5470). The newspaper said that some money issues need to be resolved before a deal could be reached. Lugo hit .268 in 82 games for the Red Sox this past season. Willis made just seven starts in 2008, going 0-2 with a 9.38 ERA. Robertson, meanwhile, went 7-11 with a 6.35 ERA in 28 starts.

The Phillies have not closed the door on keeping free agent outfielder Pat Burrell (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=4214), who has played all nine of his major league seasons in Philadelphia. The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that the Phillies have contacted Burrell's agents "to express their interest in bringing him back, but not at any price." The Inquirer added that the Phillies might consider a trade if Burrell does not return. "The free-agent market, as far as left field goes, is scarce," general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. told the Inquirer. "But that doesn't mean there aren't players who are available. Somebody could pop on the market if they are non-tendered. It could be somebody who might become available who isn't available at this time because of player movement. We'll keep monitoring it."

The Los Angeles Dodgers (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=lad) have withdrawn the contract offer extended to free-agent outfielder Manny Ramirez (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=2974), but negotiations are expected to continue, according to MLB.com. The Dodgers had offered Ramirez a two-year deal guaranteed for $45 million, plus an option year at an additional $15 million. "We still have an interest in him," general manager Ned Colletti said. "This doesn't mean we won't continue discussions. They just can't accept that offer flat-out. It's like any other free-agent negotiation now. We'll have conversations and sometimes you're able to sign the player and sometimes you're not."

According to a report in the Chicago Tribune, the Cubs would be interested in signing Randy Johnson (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=2131) if Ryan Dempster (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=3845) decides to sign with another team left and their bid to trade for the Padres' Jake Peavy (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=5019) gets rejected. The Cubs are said to have offered a four-year deal in the $50 million range to Dempster, but the Blue Jays and Braves and at least two other teams are looking at the veteran right-hander. Johnson's agent, Alan Nero, said his client "would seem to be a perfect fit" for the Cubs. "First, there is the Lou factor," Nero said, referring to Lou Piniella, who managed Johnson in Seattle. "And second, it's the National League. There's no question the Cubs would be on his short list."

According to a report in the Detroit Free Press, the agent for closer Trevor Hoffman (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=2817) expects to hear from the Tigers soon. "They are a team I would expect will have a lot of interest," Rick Thurman said in a text message to the Free Press. Thurman said he has not discussed the Tigers with Hoffman in any detail, other than to inform him that they are a potential suitor. "We have not keyed on specific teams yet," Thurman said. The Indians, meanwhile, could also pursue Hoffman now that the Padres pulled their offer to the all-time saves leader off the table, the Cleveland Plain-Dealer reported. "When negotiations between Trevor Hoffman and the Padres didn't work out, he became an alternative for us," Cleveland GM Mark Shapiro said. The Indians are also expected to look into the availability of Huston Street (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=6175), who the Rockies acquired from the A's in the trade involving Matt Holliday (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=5940).

White Sox general manager Ken Williams is believed to be eyeing prospects in a trade that could involve outfielder Jermaine Dye (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=3449), according to a report in the Chicago Tribune. Dye, who has a limited no-trade clause, is signed through the 2009 season and his contract with the White Sox includes a mutual option for 2010. Several White Sox officials watched Mets pitching prospects Bobby Parnell (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=29227) and Eddie Kunz (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=29201) pitch in the Arizona Fall League on Tuesday night, according to the Tribune.

Reds general manager Walt Jocketty confirmed the two clubs had talked. "We've talked to Colorado, but we've talked to a lot of different clubs. But that didn't get out," Jocketty said. "We've let clubs know our position. We're looking for catching, center field, shortstop and a right-handed RBI guy." Mike Cameron | Brewers (http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=mil)
The proposed trade of Mike Cameron (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=3331) from the Brewers to the Yankees for Melky Cabrera (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=6347) apparently is off, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.
"I haven't heard from (Yankees general manager) Brian Cashman, and I haven't called him," Melvin told the newspaper. "I'm very happy having Mike Cameron with our ball club."
At the end of the winter meetings last week in Las Vegas, it appeared the sides were on track for an exchange of Cameron for Cabrera, with left-hander Kei Igawa (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=28633) possibly thrown in as well by New York. Melvin said at the time he considered it a strong possibility the deal would get done this week. But Cashman never called back and various reports claimed the Yankees were shifting their focus to Manny Ramirez (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=2974).
Not thrilled about being left dangling, Melvin withdrew and said he wasn't sure he'd resume talks even if the Yankees re-established contact, the newspaper reported.
"I'm not sure if I even want to do that," said Melvin.

Randy Wolf | Astros (http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=hou)
Don't look for a Randy Wolf signing announcement with the Atlanta Braves anytime soon, reports ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick.
Wolf is represented by the Arn Tellem's Wasserman Group, which also represents shortstop Rafael Furcal. The Braves thought they were on the verge of signing Furcal earlier this week, only to watch the negotiations suddenly unravel and Furcal reach agreement on a three-year deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The relationship between the Braves and agent Paul Kinzer is now so strained, one person with knowledge of the Braves' thinking said it would be "next to impossible" for Atlanta to turn around and pursue Wolf.

Mark Teixeira | Angels (http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=laa)
The Red Sox appear to be in the lead heading down the stretch in the race to land Mark Teixeira (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=4937), the Boston Globe reported.
A general manager not associated with any of the Teixeira contenders is quoted by the Globe with the view that the Red Sox are now the frontrunners to land the free agent first baseman.
"I think they're in the lead and ahead of where everyone else is right now," the GM said. "I'm not sure who's bidding against them at this point."
Asked if he thinks the race is almost over, the GM replied, "You just never know where Scott Boras and the Red Sox are involved." He added that he didn't think any team would go to 10 years on a Teixeira contract.
According to various reports, Boston's biggest challenges appear to be from the Angels and Nationals at the moment.
The Orioles, meanwhile, could be out of the picture unless Teixeira, a Maryland native, agrees to a hometown discount, ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney reported.
The Orioles have resisted upgrading their initial offer, believed to be seven years and about $150 million.

The Pirates are on the verge of signing catcher Ryan Doumit (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=6304) to a multiyear extension but negotiations with another core player, center fielder Nate McLouth (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=6220), have not gone as well, the Pittsburgh Post Gazette reported.
McLouth's agent, Mike Nicotera, told the newspaper that the chance of achieving a multiyear extension is "close to dead." The parties now are working on a basic one-year contract, the type most commonly arranged for players eligible for salary arbitration.
Doumit, McLouth and starter Paul Maholm (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=6398) each is first-time eligible for arbitration, but the Pirates -- in keeping with management's precedent for core players -- decided instead to pursue multiyear extensions, the Post Gazette reported.

MLB.com reported that the Padres have interest in several free agents, particularly veteran middle infielders Omar Vizquel (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=2149) and David Eckstein (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=4625) among others, but likely won't make any moves until late January or early February.
"Most of our free-agent shopping is going to be done in late January, early February. ... We just don't have the wherewithal to be aggressive in the free-agent market," general manager Kevin Towers told the website. "And we don't have the trade pieces to make a deal.
"We'll wait this market out, and hopefully there will be some bargains, especially with middle infielders, that are good financial fits for us. I think there's quite a few teams in the same position we are. We don't have any other choice. We're forced to wait."

Manny Ramirez | Dodgers (http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=lad) | Interested: Yankees (http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=nyy)?
There are split opinions in the Yankees front office over the pursuit of free agent Manny Ramirez (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=2974), the New York Daily News reported.
Citing a source familiar with the Yankees' thinking, the newspaper reported that general manager Brian Cashman has been lukewarm to the idea of signing Ramirez, but the rest of the front office - most notably Hal and Hank Steinbrenner - believes he is precisely what the Yankees need to bolster a lineup that underachieved in 2008.
One baseball official told the Daily News that the Yankees' interest in Ramirez is more than "cursory," that they see the slugger as the perfect complement in their lineup to Alex Rodriguez (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=3115).
The official, according to the Daily News, believes that the Yankees are "going hard" after Ramirez, to the point where they are willing to give him a three-year deal worth from $22 million to $25 million per year. Two other officials are skeptical that the Bombers would commit three years to Ramirez, who has already seen the Dodgers make and withdraw a two-year, $45 million offer this winter.
The newspaper reported it is unlikely that agent Scott Boras will let Ramirez sign anywhere until Mark Teixeira (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=4937) makes his decision.

The interest in Will Ohman (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=4563) has picked up considerably since the winter meetings, with the Mets, Cleveland and several other teams making inquiries, reports ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick.
The Mets, already in the market for a lefty reliever to complement Pedro Feliciano (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=5314), could be ready to step up their efforts for Ohman now that Philadelphia has added lefty hitter Raul Ibanez (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=3504) to its lineup. Cleveland, which has already acquired Kerry Wood (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=3821) and Joe Smith (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=28729) this winter, continues to try to upgrade its bullpen.
Ohman, 31, posted a 4-1 record with a 3.68 ERA in 83 appearances with Atlanta this season. He struck out 53 batters in 58 2/3 innings, and held lefties to a .200 average and a .314 slugging percentage. He's looking for at least a two-year deal.

Brian Fuentes | Rockies (http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=col) | Interested: Angels (http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=laa)
Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak told the St. Louis Post Dispatch he would not allow the pursuit of free-agent closer Brian Fuentes (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=4731) to "create a paralysis" within the club's search for pitching help.
The newspaper reported that the Cardinals have extended a two-year offer believed worth $16 million to $18 million for Fuentes, who earlier this week voiced a preference to pitch for the Los Angeles Angels (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=laa). The Angels, however, remain focused on the sweepstakes for free-agent first baseman Mark Teixeira (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=4937). Until Teixeira decides on his new team, the Cardinals may face the possibility of waiting or bidding against themselves.
"From my end, it's been a slow-moving process," Mozeliak told the newspaper. "It's a little bit frustrating."
The Cardinals, according to the newspaper, may investigate the availability of former Los Angeles Dodgers (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=lad) closer Takashi Saito (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=6498). The Dodgers failed to offer Saito a contract before last weekend's deadline, making the former NL All-Star a free agent.

Bobby Crosby | Athletics (http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=oak)
Oakland's pursuit of Rafael Furcal (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=4243) ended Tuesday, but the A's will not automatically readjust their sights on the next available shortstop target and are likely to stay put with Bobby Crosby (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=5770), the San Francisco Chronicle reported.
The Chronicle reported that Oakland does not have interest in free agent Orlando Cabrera (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=3739) unless Cabrera can be had for a bargain late in the process. The A's might consider dealing for a shortstop, but they won't easily part with top pitching prospects Brett Anderson and Trevor Cahill, so there's a "very real possibility" the team will elect to again go with Crosby as its shortstop. <

"So far, we've been contacted by at least 10 teams," the agent, Tom O'Connell, told the newspaper. "He had a very solid year. He could've easily won 15 games. I think he's going to be an outstanding pitcher in this market."
Redding, 30, was non-tendered by the Nationals last week. He pitched 182 innings for Washington, posting a 10-11 record and 4.95 ERA.

Bootcheck, 30, is a 6-foot-5, 210-pound right-hander who spent parts of the past five seasons with the Los Angeles Angels (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=laa) and posted a 6.04 ERA in 77 appearances, including a 10.13 ERA in 10 appearances this past season.

Nationals (http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=was)?
The Boston Herald reported that the Red Sox have extended an offer for Mark Teixeira (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=4937) that could cost them an "historic" amount of money.
While not reporting terms, the offer for the free agent first baseman is "believed to be for at least eight years." The Red Sox have a club policy of not commenting on their negotiating stance with any free agents.
The Herald reported that Teixeira is believed to be seeking an average annual value of more than the $21 million that left-hander CC Sabathia (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=4553) is close to finalizing with the Yankees for the next seven years, and a lot closer to the $27.5 million that third baseman Alex Rodriguez (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=3115) is guaranteed to make through 2017 with the Yankees.
Various reports say the Nationals made Teixeira an eight-year, $160 million offer. Angels general manager Tony Reagins recently confirmed that his club had also made an eight-year offer. The Orioles, according to reports, have offered Teixeira a seven-year deal worth between $140 million and $150 million.
ESPN's Karl Ravech spoke to a source close to Teixeira who says the first baseman is getting close to a decision. Teixeira, a Maryland native, says he's very interested in the lure of playing near his home, saying the Orioles and Nationals are as much in consideration as the other three teams that have expressed interest to his agent Scott Boras, the Angels, Red Sox and Yankees.

Less than a week after the Cubs backed out of a potential deal on the final day of the winter meetings, Padres CEO Sandy Alderson made it seem like Jake Peavy (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=5019) would start next season with the team, the San Diego Union Tribune reported.
"We are no longer actively pursuing any trade for Jake, which is not to say someone won't approach us," Alderson told the newspaper. "We said from the very beginning ... that we would not make a trade unless it made baseball sense."
San Diego general manager Kevin Towers, who was unavailable for comment on Monday, said Thursday at the conclusion of the meetings, that there was a good chance Peavy would start next season with the team.
The Angels reportedly are interested in Peavy, though Peavy said at season's end he would not OK a move to the American League. Padres General Manager Kevin Towers has said the Angels expressed interest in trading for both Peavy and first baseman Adrian Gonzalez (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=5405), the Tribune reported.

The Orioles have been talking to agent Tom O'Connell, who represents Tim Redding (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=4794) and fellow free agent Carl Pavano (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=3784), reports ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick.
The Orioles are looking for an affordable veteran starter or two to provide innings behind Jeremy Guthrie (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=5370). Redding, 30, went 10-11 with a 4.95 ERA in Washington last year. The Orioles tried to trade him to Colorado recently for outfielder Willy Taveras (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=5895). When the deal fell through, both Redding and Taveras were non-tendered and became free agents. The New York Daily News reported Tuesday that the Mets might also be looking at Redding as a back-of-the-rotation option. The Padres, who are also looking to add pitching depth, appear to have no interest in either Redding or Pavano.

"He painted a bad picture of New York and the Yankees," a source told the newspaper. "A lot of negative things."
Lofton's words apparently couldn't match the record-setting $161 million for seven years the Yankees offered the 28-year-old lefty, who played with Lofton in Cleveland in 2001 and 2007.
Now, the Yankees are poised to introduce Sabathia this week. He is scheduled to arrive in town tonight, undergo a physical tomorrow, and could be in pinstripes at a Wednesday press conference at the old Yankee Stadium.

Left-hander Chris Capuano (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=5469) is close to agreeing to a minor-league deal with incentives with the Brewers, a person familiar with the talks confirmed to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
Capuano was not tendered a contract by the Brewers on the deadline for arbitration-eligible players Friday because he missed the entire 2008 season after undergoing "Tommy John" surgery. Capuano made $3.75 million last year and teams are not allowed to cut a major-league player's salary more than 20%. The Brewers weren't willing to commit $3 million to Capuano because of the surgery, so they began working on the incentive-laden minor-league deal, the newspaper reported.

Finding another starting pitcher is a priority for the Mets, and free agent Randy Wolf (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=4087) is a "strong possibility," the New York Daily News reported.
The Mets addressed glaring needs in the bullpen at the winter meetings and have now switched their priority to starting pitching. The Mets are interested in re-signing Oliver Perez (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=5192), something GM Omar Minaya has said is "50-50," the Daily News reported. Wolf, who has a career mark of 11-5 with a 3.34 ERA in 28 starts against the Mets, is likely to sign faster than Perez, the newspaper added.
The Mets like Derek Lowe (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=3640) but he's a less likely alternative because, his price tag (perhaps as much as $15 million per) may be too high. Jon Niese looms as a likely rotation candidate, joining Johan Santana (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=4280), John Maine (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=6041) and Mike Pelfrey (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=28507) and whoever else is acquired this winter.
Wolf's agent is Arn Tellem, who has a close relationship with both owner Jeff Wilpon and Minaya and last week completed the three-year contract for Francisco Rodriguez (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=5357) with the Mets.

Pirates management has expressed interest in free-agent third baseman/outfielder Ty Wigginton (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=5176), the Pittsburgh Post Gazette reported.
The Astros released Wigginton Friday after declining to tender him a contract offer through salary arbitration. He made $4.35 million last season and likely could have received a raise up to $6 million through the process.
Wigginton, 31, batted .285 with 23 home runs and 58 RBIs in 386 at-bats. He spent part of 2004 and all of the following year in Pittsburgh, having arrived in the multiplayer trade that sent Kris Benson (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=4006) to the New York Mets (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=nym).
The Pirates are eager to add right-handed power to a lineup that, for the moment, probably can count only on left-handed Ryan Doumit (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=6304) and Adam LaRoche (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=5879) for home runs in 2009.

The Brewers might settle on disappointing lefthander Kei Igawa (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=28633) to complete the Mike Cameron (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=3331)-Melky Cabrera (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=6347) deal, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.
Talks between Milwaukee and New York involving a swap of centerfielders Cameron and Cabrera broke down Thursday because the Yankees asked the Brewers to take on some of Cameron's contract.
Now, it's the Brewers, not the Yankees, who are looking to get some cash in the deal, the newspaper reported.
Because the Yankees refused to put one of their top pitching prospects in the deal, the Brewers might settle for Igawa, who spent most of the 2008 season at Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Igawa, 29, is owed $4 million in each of the next three seasons.
If the Brewers take on that contract, it will negate their savings in dealing Cameron and his $10 million salary for 2009.
