NEW YORK (AP) — Need proof the television ratings system is dead, a victim of the TiVo, the ubiquitous satellite dish and schizophrenic viewing habits? Take a look at what's happening with "Battlestar Galactica."
If the traditional ratings system is used to measure its success, well, the series is scraping bottom like a viper throwing sparks on a hot landing.
Yet the show's producers (http://www.newsarama.com/tv/080818-david-eick-battlestar.html) are moving forward with two post-"Galactica" projects that would never have seen the light of a cathode tube had ratings been the only factor in the decisions.
Jamie Bamber, the British actor who plays Lee "Apollo" Adama in the series (http://www.space.com/entertainment/galactica_new_031204.html), has a much better way to gauge ratings. Turns out, as the ratings plummet, the show's popularity continues to skyrocket as it reaches the end of its five-year run early in 2009.
"When the numbers were high I would get stopped in the street maybe once a week," Bamber said. "Now that the viewing figures are lower on the TV, everywhere I go someone will come up to me and say what a huge fan they are. That just tells me that people watch the show in a more modern way and that it has reached its sort of critical mass."
"Galactica" wrapped shooting in July and the final 10 episodes will begin airing in January. But the franchise won't stop there.
Producers recently announced end-of-the-summer production of a two-hour standalone "Galactica" prequel that will air in 2009 after the series finale. And they've also shot a pilot for a new series called "Caprica," which has yet to be picked up by the network but seems destined to air.
These things never used to happen. There never would've been a "Rhoda" had "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" tanked. "Fish" would've been fried had it not been for the popularity of "Barney Miller."
"Galactica's" numbers — to put it politely — have begun to stink. The latest Nielsen ratings seem to indicate the show's viewers are as hard to find as the fleet's mythical destination of Earth. The series averaged 2.8 million viewers an episode during Season 1. During the most recent run of 10 episodes, the show averaged 2.2 million viewers, a slight dip overall but up from Seasons 2 and 3. The series lost some of that steam by the midseason finale, falling to just 1.8 million viewers.
Co-executive producer Michael Angeli thinks the numbers are irrelevant, however. He believes most "Galactica" fans have atypical viewing habits and take advantage of new technology to watch the show whenever they want.
"I think we were one of the first ones," Angeli said. "TiVo had just sort of taken off. This was four or five seasons ago, and because we were on Friday nights most people, most fans don't watch it (on first run). They TiVo it and watch it a zillion times."
Others rent or buy the DVDs after the season is over and watch in long marathons. To take advantage of this group, producers will be releasing the two-hour movie on DVD shortly after it appears on SciFi.
The movie is a prequel that gives some insight into the machinations of the cylons before they unleashed the nuclear holocaust that wiped out all but 50,000 human inhabitants of the 12 colonies. "Galactica" star Edward James Olmos will direct and Dean Stockwell (Cylon No. 1), Aaron Douglas (Chief Tyrol) and Michael Trucco (Sam Anders) — all "skinjobs," cylons who appear to be human — will participate.
While the movie is a lock to air, the fate of "Caprica" remains to be decided. The pilot has been shot and screened, and there's a trailer up on YouTube. Angeli is helping with early scripts in case the series is picked up and said the show is an almost complete departure from "Galactica."
"In fact, I don't think we ever go into space," he said.
"Caprica" takes place 51 years before the events of "Galactica." It stars Esai Morales and Eric Stoltz as the heads of rival families who clash over the creation of artificial intelligence, which will eventually lead to the cylons.
Besides the robots and the location, the only real connection between "Galactica" and "Caprica" will be Joseph Adama, the character played by Morales. While Joseph Adama — father and grandfather to the characters (http://www.space.com/php/multimedia/imagedisplay/img_display.php?pic=eick-interview-ff.jpg&cap=The+cast+of+TV%27s+%27Battlestar+Galactica%27+ on+the+SciFi+Channel.+Credit%3A+SciFi+Channel.) played by Olmos and Bamber — never appears in "Galactica," his work as a lawyer provides a moral compass in a significant storyline and his name is often evoked.
Like "Galactica," which took on war, terrorism, torture, religion and questions of morality, the storyline in "Caprica" will have many things to say about our society.
"It's really about big business, the machinations and the subterfuge that go on inside of it when you have something that is groundbreaking and could change the nature of life and the future," Angeli said. "In this case, they're developing artificial intelligence."
Executive producer Ronald D. Moore described the show to reporters at the Television Critics Association meeting in Beverly Hills. While he was talking about the fictional colony Caprica, he could just as easily have been talking about today's America.
"It's about a vibrant society. It's really at the height of its power and the height of its decadence at the same time," Moore said. "So it's really a thriving, vibrant culture that's going to come apart as we watch, but it's sort of the roller coaster. It's thrilling at the top when you see how far down you've got to go."

A ‘Galactica’ Spinoff
Compiled by Dave Itzkoff
Published: December 2, 2008
The great thing about science fiction is that the future never runs out. As it prepares for the final season of its television space opera “Battlestar Galactica,” the Sci Fi Channel has announced it is preparing a spinoff that will take place in the decades before “Battlestar Galactica.” The new show, “Caprica,” will be set 50 years earlier (in the future), and will follow the fortunes of two competing families, the Adamas and the Greystones, leading to the events of the “Battlestar Galactica” series. The cast of “Caprica” is to include Eric Stoltz (http://movies.nytimes.com/person/68432/Eric-Stoltz?inline=nyt-per) and Esai Morales, and its executive producers include Ronald D. Moore, the producer of the “Battlestar Galactica” revival. Production on “Caprica” is scheduled to begin next year, and the show is expected to make its debut on Sci Fi in 2010

based on the very end of that preview. Admiral Adama will either be tried for being a Cylon, or Crimes against the Cylons themselves.

They just showed a 'sneak peak' at the new season. Basically a 60-90sec clip. It was of Adama and Zurek jabbing at eachother. Zurek is the president, or at least 'running the govt' and he's asking where Roslin is and accuses Adama of hiding her from the people, then Adama throws out 'I guess I know who to turn to if theres a problem' to which Zurek replies with 'I'm not hard to find'

I almost got it right 2 years ago.

Tighs wife ain't dead! He is feeling so much remorse and guilt because he didn't kill her. He poisoned her alright but not enough to kill her. He figured if she wanted to help the Cylons, she could stay with them, so he gave her just enough not to kill her then left her there with them. Duala blowing her brains out was a great 'oh fuck' moment. It added a great sadness to the ep (it already had tons of great sadness). What I don't get, besides Kara's dead body, is how they all went from Earth to Caprica. My official guess is the Cylon God (again, a Human creator) found earth long ago, cloned a couple bodies they found and were sent into Caprica.

Everything started on earth, isn't it? They always made it appears that the travel was Kobol to Earth, still all the clues during the journeys point to the opposite. They knew how to find earth ( and so leave the clues) because they went the other way (leaving clues en route). To Kobol.
Just a vicious cycle, really.
Though about kara, I'm at lost. Even more so after seeing Leoben's reaction (the king of nutjob, if HE's scared and WALK away from Kara, then something definetly is weird.)

She's gotta be. Everyone that was on Earth long ago was a 'final 5' and since she showed up, she is. Unless Tigh is seeing what he wants, which has happened before.

Also, I doubt the Cylon's created Human's. Then you would have to explain how the Cylon's came to be.

This show has become a bloody, but good, mess of questions. I hope they don't dump half of the answers into their spinoff.

I'm guessing new Kara is cylon, but old Kara was human (whatever the fuck that means now). Which means there's another resurrection ship nearby....

I don't know how they're going to explain her teleporting to earth. That's a black fucking hole in the storyline right there, but trust in Moore....

Oh yeah, next weeks seems like a 'consequences' episode where we see the results of this week, so the main storyline doesn't progress and all the big questions are answered in future episodes.

I think there are resurrection properties right there on earth , so perhaps explaining why the Dylan 4 could be resurrected. I think Kara is obviously an Angel of sorts, not impossible given being on this show. I think it's interesting that Leoben seemed scared of her since that has been his crush girl for years. I also find it horribly fraked up Ellen was fracking a cylon to save her husband the cylon and she is a cylon. I remember when Arch had mentioned her and I always had it the back of my mind she could be one. Although I wish it would have been an Adama I am happy with her being the Final one. I was so worried it would be D with all the air time she was getting, little did I know she'd be ending it all.

PS when can we stop using spoiler tags? I mean what's the time frame of it being acceptable to just shoot the shit in here. I've always been a firm believer if you haven't watched the show you shouldn't read an ongoing thread.

Candycane

It kinda has to be Ellen if Tigh is having memories of her at a bank. I MEAN Sam remembers playing Guitar Hero World Tour, Tyrol remembers buying Kiwi and Tory remembers fraking her cousin, wait what? Anyway If Tigh remembers her and then she was alive not so long ago seems a logical explanation.

Stax
01-17-2009, 02:15 PM
Either the Cylons are fraking with Kara again for some reason or Tigh is falling apart/remembering something false. Either one seems possible given Tigh's instability and the repeated love affair the Cylons have with Kara (New Caprica, the angel of death thingy, etc, etc).

The key obvious thing is that there wasn't a FULL marker tag on "Kara's" supposed downed Viper AND there were no clear Kara-signs on the body other than the dog tags (rather simply replicated). The confusing thing is if that ISN'T Kara then why is there a random downed Viper on Earth.

Also, given the constant thing with cycles, the idea that the Cylons made man seems perfectly possible. The Cylons make man on Earth and are destroyed by their creation, those humans go to Kobol where they make Cylons and are destroyed by their creation, and they all come back to Earth.

Would also explain Tigh's memories if, at some point, everyone had a Cylon version of themselves.

Yeah, I am with you, but you have to assume that the skeletons they found on Earth have some feature that prove them to be cylon right? If the "humans" were cylon, they would have found shared traits with the skeletons found on earth. So yeah, i think that everyone is NOT a cylon because they obviously found a difference.

The Astronaut: Garrett Reisman

Cool screen: Watching 'BSG' on space station

http://a330.g.akamai.net/7/330/2540/20090116034951/www.variety.com/graphics/photos/_storypics/reisman.jpg
FREE FLOATING: Astronaut Garrett Reisman wonders why the Galactica bothered with gravity.

The coolest opportunity ever to watch "Battlestar Galactica" (http://javascript%3Cb%3E%3C/b%3E:zodInfuser.FillDescriptions%28%27"Battlestar% 20Galactica."%27%29;)has to be watching the show while orbiting the planet called Earth. Each astronaut gets to select about four different television programs to watch while living aboard the International Space Station, and "BSG" was one of my choices.
There was some downside to watching the show in space, however. First, after seeing battlestars equipped with faster-than-light drives and bristling with laser cannon you can't help but feel your space station is kind of lame. Second, after a few episodes you start getting the sneaking feeling that at least one of your crewmates is really a Cylon.
Still, there was nothing like watching "BSG" while floating along in zero gravity. First I'd go through the modules turning off all the lights that I could. There would still be a few blinking lights and LEDs on the comm panels and the other equipment, and when the window shutter was open occasionally the earthshine would light up the room with a faint blue glow.
Then I'd float up to the laptop which we used to watch the show. Holding on gently with my thumb and index finger I'd lose myself in the drama of the struggles of the humans and the Cylons. Surrounded by the sounds of the space station, the humming of the pumps, the whirring of the fans and the clicking of the valves it was easy to blur the line between science fiction and science fact.
I am a fan of science fiction in general and have fond memories of the original "Battlestar Galactica," having watched it as a kid. But the main thing that appeals to me about the new "BSG" is the way contemporary issues are portrayed as an allegory, with ambiguity and complexity. Issues are not presented in black and white with clear answers; rather, the intention of "BSG" is often to intentionally make the viewer uncomfortable and challenge their assumptions. As an engineer and scientist who strives for objectivity I find that refreshing.
So I kept watching the show throughout my training and my time in space. Watching from Star City, Russia, during training for my mission had also been otherworldly. Star City is a Russian air force base outside Moscow where every cosmonaut, starting with Yuri Gagarin, has trained to fly in space. During the Cold War, the very existence of Star City was a closely guarded secret.
Things have improved recently, but when my commander, Peggy Whitson, and I were there the years of neglect after the collapse of the Soviet Union were evident. The buildings were showing their age. After a long day of training, it was easy to get immersed in "BSG" since the grit and stark functionality of the halls of Star City were so similar to the halls of Galactica. The phones there still had cords, too, like the phones on Galactica.
Later, when Peggy and I were in space together, we had a video conference with Ron Moore and David Eick (http://www.variety.com/profiles/people/main/366438/David%20Eick.html?dataSet=1), the producers of the show. They talked to us about coming full circle since Ron and David were drawn to science fiction by the drama of human spaceflight.
I also told them of one thing that I found very strange about the show for the first time after viewing it from space: It struck me as just wrong that all the characters were walking around the ship like there was still gravity up there. Floating is one of the most pleasurable and fantastic experiences of spaceflight and I cannot believe that any spacefaring people would deny themselves that joy. They explained that it would cost almost as much to simulate zero-gravity on a TV show as it would to go into space for real.
When I got back to Earth, Ron was kind enough to invite me up to Vancouver to visit the set. As my visit approached I was cautioned that there would be some limited nudity on the set that day. I replied that I was perfectly fine with that as long as Dean Stockwell (http://www.variety.com/profiles/people/main/31071/Dean%20Stockwell.html?dataSet=1) was not involved.
Meeting members of the cast and crew was fantastic and it became immediately clear that the "BSG" team was as closely knit as the team of astronauts and cosmonauts that I had the pleasure of working with in space.
But the coolest part was getting to be a Colonial Marine.
I can't tell you about the story arc of my character or the complex development of his psyche because -- spoiler alert -- I get blown to bits about 10 seconds after first appearing onscreen, (but not before one of the other Marines vomits all over me). It was some of the most fun I had ever had!
I was having so much fun I stayed on the set until 1 a.m. This was a bit of a problem since I had a 6 a.m. flight out of Seattle. I drove through the night and went straight to the airport. About 24 hours later, after two flight connections, I found myself in a bar in New York City (http://www.variety.com/profiles/Company/main/2084141/New%20York%20City.html?dataSet=1).
Suddenly it hit me that I had come back to Earth; that trip used to take me about 10 minutes.
Garrett Reisman has been a NASA astronaut since 1998. He completed his first space flight last June, having logged more than three months as a crew member aboard the International Space Station.

I've been thinking that myself... at no point during the last 2 episodes, did we get a good look at 'earth' from space, and when earth was seen at the end of Crossroads I could swear it looked inhabited. This planet is definitely important to human/cylon history, but until we see a definitive recognizable landmark, I'm unconvinced that it is earth

But you also have to consider that they had a map before they were led to earth. They know where certain stars should be and where the other planets are around it. If those things were missing, I would assume the characters would notice. And on top of that, the Viper lead them all to earth just like the prophecy stated.

why can't they? They're machines, they don't need rest breaks or weekends or time off and they don't make mistakes. After all, they built the rather large and elaborate detention centre on New Caprica in only a couple of months. I see no problem with them building a few dozen basestars in a couple decades.

What I'm curious about... is the entire Cylon civilization following Galactica, or are there still Cylons on their homeworld or back at the colonies?

I think mongotim hit it on the head. Ultimately there are still what... 10 episodes left? Clearly there has to be some remaining large storyline left to fill in that gap, meaning something we think we "know" as an audience now isn't true. Either Kara's "angel of death" storyline has to get further explained, the non-rebel Cylons have to show up and do something (in the little preview show Sci-Fi did the creators made very careful note of the fact that those Cylons were still out there), or something has to happen with the Ellen Tigh storyline.

Humanity and Cylons, all cylons settle in peace on a new homeworld, ending the cycle once and for all

It's seems like a rather random plot-point to have all this jazz from many seasons lead to a faulty planet only to find the proper one in a few more episodes. The only way that makes sense to me is if they find something meaningful on the planet and it requires the human/Cylon unity thang they have going right now, but they seem just about ready to leave anyways so that's rapidly falling away in liklihood.

The fleet does need shaking up. Someone needs to put a bullet in Zareks head though, as much as im losing faith in the Adama/Roslin leadership Zarek is nothing but a terrorist and an opportunist.

Is there anyone who has been following this show that is on Gaida's side? I mean there is a smidgen of empathy that you have to have for the character when you think about everything they have been through. Yes, we know Gaida (who is gay if you watched the webisodes. How do you name a Gay guy Gaida?) and Zerick are kind of the villains, because we all know Adama had no other motives besides getting the people some place safe. But, think about how you would feel if you were forced to work with the people who killed everyone you knew and loved? Obviously it would be extremely difficult to trust someone/something like that. I know most of us want Gaida dead, and I am included, but there is a part of me that says that he is not completely out of bounds doing what he is doing. And that is what makes this show great and this season so far SPEC FUCKING TACULAR.

Yeah, I am with you. I think it has become a point where you have absolutely no choice but to trust the Cylons.
I think what might help would be for the civilian fleet to actually see the rebel cylons engage the main cylon forces in their defense. It's easy for Adama and everyone else to say they're on our side, they helped us destroy the hub and 2 baseships, but who among them actually saw them do it? A few of Galactica's pilots, and that's it. People can gear good things all they want, but until they see it happen, they can deny it all they want.

where the hell have cavil and his forces been anyway? We haven't seen hide nor hair of them since the hub

As much as I want Gaeta dead he makes a good point. We as the viewer get the see the whole picture of what is really going on but think about if you were apart of the fleet as a civilian. For the past three years you have been fearing the clyons, they blew up your home world and probably killed your family and one day you hear we are buddies with some of them. No cool.

But in the end geata will die...and I can't wait ti watch it.

Candycane
01-31-2009, 09:18 PM
I think the whole point is the bigger political statement that the show has been sometimes not so subtle at "hinting" toward. Why do we hate the cylons/humans so much? That was an amazing scene when my Starbuck came in and rescued Lee and I loved they kissed. I wish to the gods that Helo would wake the frak up and get them all out of the brig. I also really like the scene where Helo goes to protect Sharon because , obviously he loves her.. he doesn't care she is a cylon. What does it even matter...

And refresh my memory what's "the little secret" Baltar is referring to with Gaeta (who I hope has to eat his other leg as a form of death).

01-31-2009, 09:24 PM

it hasn't been revealed yet... well, not on the show anyway... the 'Face of the Enemy' webisode series that came out a few weeks ago(I've linked to it here, it's a page or two back, go and watch it) gave it away.

Incidentally, I was just thinking back over this episode and the scene where Tigh & Adama are talking in his quarters and Roslin walks in is just perfect, Michael Hogan played that brilliantly, he's totally flummoxed and has to stammer his way through the rest of his conversation

PS that last paragraph was posted simply because I wanted to use the word flummoxed in conversation, we now return you to your regularly scheduled thread, already in progress

Yeah, that webisode (http://www.scifi.com/rewind/?sid=870861) added more meat to Gaeta's backstory.

I watch the show. I loved the original version. I dont hate the new version, I just feel its pretty dry as far as sci fi goes. I would of loved to see more connections to the original storyline and plot. The new BSG is borderline soft scifi. I like the character depth for the extensive cast. Reminds me of TNG. I dont like that the story doesnt seem to progress to anything.

So short answer "no". I dont come down to walmart and knock the dick out of your mouth, so dont criticize me for criticizing the show.
