View Full Version : Underrated Films

Why don't we just say "every good movie since the inception of film is overrated" to cap off all this retardation?
But, Bixby you bastard, we're talking about underrated films now. Ha! I make you look foolish when I quote you entirely out of context.
What's all the hoopla about? Everyone is arguing who has choosing the most OVERrated movies. Well, overrated means bad. And bad means... well, not good. I want a good, positive poll. Which would be the opposite which means here is your place to put your most UNDERrated movies. The movies that kick ass but no one's looking.
Here are a few of mine;
Starship Troopers: I loved this movie when it first came out, and I still love it today. It's not cinematic brilliance, but it's damn entertaining in the vein of Paul Verhoeven's other sci-fi endeavors, "Robocop" and "Total Recall"
Near Dark: One of the best vampire movies ever made. I know this one has a cult following, but it never got the notoriety it so richly deserves.
Election: Lots of critical raves, but no-one seems to know about this great movie, with Matthew Broderick doing an polar opposite of Ferris Bueller as the foil to Reese Witherspoon.
Flirting With Disaster: David O. Russell's comedy gem that very few people seem to know about. This movie is over 10 years old and is one of Ben Stiller's funniest movies, way better than that "Meet the Parents" shit.
Nixon: Stone's second U.S. President biopic was just as entertaining as "JFK", moreso because of Anthony Hopkins and Joan Allen playing their roles to a T.
Miller's Crossing: My favorite film from the Coen brothers, got critical raves but never got the play that "Fargo" and "No Country For Old Men" received.
The Sweet Hereafter: Atom Egoyan's adaptation of Russell Banks' heartbreaking novel is a brillant movie, if not just as heartbreaking as the book. Still, the performances are great, especially Ian Holm's and Sarah Polley's.
Also vastly underrated:
The Limey, Strange Days, Empire of the Sun, Safe (starring Julianne Moore), Heat (Michael Mann's film is a work of art), Pitch Black (Vin Diesel can has good movie??) and Jacob's Ladder.
I don't talk as much as Vox. How about
Death to Smoochy. Yeah. Smooch Heil, Smooch Heil!

Bubble Boy is an underrated film. I don’t mean the film where John Travolta dies either, although that film was also hilarious.

They Live
The Rocketeer
Insomnia (Nolan version)
The Rescuers Down Under (childhood classic)
Sunshine--While I agree that the Freddy Krueger looking killer introduced in the third act was way, wwwaaayyyy unnecessary, everyone in the cast delivers a great performance, especially Chris Evans, who outright kicked ass in this film. I've also got to give Danny Boyle and Alex Garland props for taking chances with the story, even if it's messy as all hell near the end.

Is an underrated movie considered to be like a "cult classic" or sleeper film?
Anyway I think Very Bad Things ranks up there, the movie is hysterical and yet dark. I also think Go and True Romance qualify, but do they? They are amazing films I'm just not sure if everyone vanilla and mainstream knows of them.

The Hidden - An excellent movie about a fun loving alien that enjoys loud rock music, fast cars, and violence. It also happens to takeover people’s bodies to go on crime sprees until the human is killed and then the alien just moves onto another host. One of the funniest scenes is when the alien takes over a stripper’s body and bangs someone to death.
