I'm planning on doing that some day. One way ticket, and no plans past the airport.

I wonder how much you would need if you were to travel for a whole year straight, all over the world. I mean. The biggest expense would be flying from one big region to another. But from there, I'd imagine your plane/train/bus tickets would be relatively cheap.

Has anyone or know of anyone who has done this that could shed some light into this for me?

Flights as you said are you big killer, but when i travelled i had an EU passport i could work without permits in Europe which meant when i was travelling i'd work in one area for a while as a base (Mostly London and then Rome) and then take trips around from there.

Assuming you have the time it's easy enough to kill your budget by flying to an area, work yourself back into having a bit of travel bank and move on. I found during that time i'd manage to branch out into areas of the region i was working in.

I'm doing Europe in a couple of weeks for probably a couple of months. I couldn't imagine taking any longer. My friends backpacked it in 4 weeks and they said it was good but they were on a budget and planned everything out. I don't wnat to do that.

Anyways. I'm thinking after Europe, I might come home for a bit and do like one continent at a time. Europe as great as it would be, is a bit cliche. I might hit Asia again. Is it better to do it that way, do a continent at a time or go straight all over?

How expensive is it to get around South America? Like if I were to land in Brazil and go around?

ElemenoP

Are you from Canada or the US and got an EU passport or are you currently living in Europe?

sleepydaz

I'm Australian with Irish parents. South America can be done really cheap if you're willing to travel in little buses and the like as the locals do. As soon as you want to do any tourist level stuff your costs go through the roof. Brazil i needed a VISA for but most other countries proof of a return/ongoing ticket was enough.

Also i found out of all the places i went to some parts of south america were made much easier by a bit of a bribe here or there

Got to meet a guy who was in the Peace Corps, his wife, who's job is to save rhinos from extinction, another guy who worked directly under Paul Wolfowitz, and an executive chef from a famous steakhouse chain.

One of the best vacations I've ever had.

For the $, most of the rooms are pretty nice. Big couches, decent bed. Depending on which way your room faces, your room could have one entire wall is glass with a great view of the strip. Or you could just over look the garage. Anyway, they have a huge buffet and they do a fake Mardi Gras type dealio every day that's lame. The biggest issue is on busy nights, the cab stand is a long line to get out of there. The reason is becuze they are technically not on the strip. And you really don't want to walk it drunk, cuz you don't want to be in the street with crazy cab drivers. You can walk to The Palms though. Also, in case you are too cheap to pay for a cab, they have free transporation out of the back to all Harrah's properties (Cesars, Harrahs, Paris, Balley's, etc.).

Money is really no object at this point. I'd be all alone though because I have no family. You need to spend some time in the mountains. If you're driving westward out of Chicago, I would recommend going more north through like South Dakota, because driving through the badlands is kind of sweet tits if the sun is right (dawn/dusk) and it beats the alternatives (Nebraska = death). Drive through Montana and then hit the NW. Go down through Cali, then Vegas, then back through Colorado. Go rafting in Colorado. Super fun. And alpine sliding.

So it looks like using the peoples timeshare in HI is out. It could still work, but they are planing to go to Belgium come June and even though they won't be taking another vacation for the rest of the year arn't sure if they will have enough 'points' left over for me to. Could purchase more if needed, but they arn't exactly sure how to do it.

So meh, it would have been really nice but I don't want to cause them extra headache trying to figure it all out. So now I need to start looking at hotels, any recommendations?

Besides, I want to be out and about not loafing around a hotel so I'm not looking for anything too nice. Location might actually be the most important detail. (and parking)

Kerjack, how long are you going and how many are you going with?

Consider priceline nyop if you are looking for relatively cheap digs. A site like betterbidding.com (or something like that) can help you narrow your searching and show you recent successful bids. You may also want to check out this one (http://www.vrbo.com/vacation-rentals/usa/hawaii/oahu) for rental properties, many of which can be as cheap or more so than some of the hotels with more location variety.

Also, the only people I saw on scooters were doucheballers or the Japanese. Rent a car for at least some of the time to get around the island. Otherwise, in Waikiki or Honolulu it's better just to walk or take the bus.

Do an off shore scuba/snorkel while you're there. Waaaay better than the touristy snorkel places like Hanauma Bay. Go on a catamaran or boat.

Kerjack
06-06-2009, 05:14 PM
7 days, just me.

Wanted to dive but don't think I'll have the time but I'll look into at least a snorkel.

jemeske
06-06-2009, 05:50 PM
Well there are at least three catamarans that will take you to snorkel about a mile off shore. They go out directly from Waikiki beach. Even though they are all in the same basic area (Turtle Canyon) it's not really crowded and the snorkeling is pretty cool. I think most of the boats will give you lunch, snorkel time, and a boat ride totaling about 2 hours for in the neighborhood of $35-45. They provide snorkel gear and leave between 10 and 10:30. You'll see more fish and have a better chance at turtles and maybe even see dolphins on the boat ride.

Hanauma Bay is probably the most popular snorkeling place on the island. It was good, but it will be crowded almost all the time it's open.

On the North Shore, Shark's Cove is a good spot though also popular. Also on the North Shore we found a beach in Waiale'e that had good snorkeling and with only 4 or 5 other people on the beach. There is a little island offshore and parking is right next to the road/ocean. That was about 2 miles west of Turtle Bay resort.

Boogie boarding is pretty good on the North Shore too. Maybe a place like Waimea Bay. If you do go there go later for a nice sunset view, good waves, and fewer people.

Other things I would definitely recommend in no order

Hiking Diamond Head--Go early to avoid the heat
Driving up and around Tantalus if you have a rental car
Pali Lookout on Pali Highway again if you have a car or take a tour bus on your way to the windward side
USS Arizona Memorial (free)
USS Missouri Memorial (you have to pay, but the lowest is $16 and for $23 you'll get a guide and more access on the ship)

I generally think Luaus are overrated. The best show is at the PCC, but that's about as far away from Waikiki as you can get, plus it's run by the Mormons so no booze.
