View Full Version : Should I get an iPhone?

I've been toying with switching to AT&T and getting myself an iPhone after my contract with Verizon runs out at the end of January. I've got an iPod touch, and since they added the app store, I don't leave home without it because of all the stuff I'm able to use it for now. It seems to me like it would make more sense to get an iPhone and that way I only have one phone sized device to keep track of during the day, plus the ability to access the internet anywhere I get phone service is tempting too. Right now I'm limited to where I can manage to find (and connect to) wi-fi. I'm just curious as to the opinions of people who have one, or have used one.

So, what are the pro's and con's? Should I get one, or just stick with Verizon and keep using my iPod with it?

I've been debating this myself.

the iphone is fucking sweet, and with the battery doubler it is even better. However, their plans are fairly pricey, and that is the one thing holding me back.

If you're not the klutzy type and if the functions available meets your needs, I don't see why not.

Go T-mobile and get an Android.

Why not just get an unlocked iPhone and stay with Verizon?

However, their plans are fairly pricey, and that is the one thing holding me back.Actually, I compared AT&T's plan to my current Verizon plan, and I'd end up paying about the same (maybe a few bucks more a month), but I'd get 100 more minutes, and rollover. So, it seems like a wash to me.

I thought the unlocked ones didn't work on Verizon's network? This might be an option too. Please, tell me more.

I would go with the New Blackberry myself. But thats just me. The iPhone is cool and all, but I would rather the Blackberry.

How arrogant are you? If you rate yourself an 8 or above then the iPhone is for you.

I'd say I'm an 8. Maybe 8.5 at the most, but 8, no problem.

As long as you don't have a matching MacBook you are ok to go.

Nope, my laptop is a dell. I'm going to pick it up on the 27th.

When I was checking into them mostly everything I heard was that they do now work on Verizon. The unlocked version cost a hell of alot more but when you have THE NETWORK nothings better.

If you live where I do, you'll quickly find that T-Mobile is the worst possible phone company to have. I had an easier time connecting with dead relatives than I did with alive ones via my T-Mobile cell phone.

aside from instantly becoming a pretentious asshole there's the matter of every quality in a phone that you're looking for can be handled by the far less expensive (and available on verizon) blackberry storm.

and for as much as you love that apple technology and its ease of use you'll be able to use that fantastic web browser for everything... but flash-enabled websites. so basically you're cut off from the best parts of the internet that haven't reached some agreement (like youtube) with apple. that precious store of yours has a developer agreement that prohibits the use of flash, a technology used in some 95% of all web browsers... but not in an iphone.

which means that sites like hulu are out. not sure if that means anything to you, or if it's any great loss, but i certainly wouldn't buy a device that's limited in some aspect simply because the store's developers agreement prevents streaming external content that could otherwise be sold through itunes (think streaming video or music from flash-based players).

if you're buying into the negative hype surrounding the storm (mainly the pre-firmware-update articles bemoaning the lack of touchscreen responsiveness or other operating system glitches), know that the latest update fixes 90% of the complaints. don't want a touchscreen? the blackberry curve or bold both do everything you want fantastically well.

fuck the iphone, stay at verizon, buy a device that does the things you want without limiting strings attached. if not a blackberry, find some other smartphone, but do yourself a fucking favor... don't buy an iphone.

Then what are you waiting for, hop on your bike and pedal over to the apple store.

Canada just got the iPhone while I was away. And when I came back... 5 people I knew had it. I've also been debating whether or not to get an iPhone. I loved my old phone so much. Until it was lost! ... But I get mixed reviews from people. Some say they love it and others have returned it.

Are iPhones all they're cracked up to be?

You'll have to repair it yourself, because getting someone else to do it is obviously retarded and stupid.

Like you, I have a Touch but I would think twice about getting an iPhone. The battery life on them is not that great, and when you throw in 3G usage, it's even worse.
It's considerably bulkier than the Touch but I don't think that's a huge issue if you're amalgamating a phone and an MP3 player like that.
Also, I heard about sketchy sound quality on calls, so that's something to research.

Those are the only things that might raise my eyebrows. Everything else about it is fucking awesome.

Also, it's only in 16GB right now. I'd probably wait for the rumoured 32GB HD iPhone.

i have me an iphone. i <3 it. 4 biggest drawbacks as far as i am concerned (and i think sig covered 2 of these in a previous post):

-no camera flash
-no video camera
-doesn't support flash oriented sites. (like durden said)

and this last one just pisses me off, maybe not everyone, but i hate it.

-when checking recent calls, you can't tell if the call was incoming or outgoing w/ out opening up the specific call history. i'm used to a phone that has 3 different colors or fonts. 1 for missed calls, 1 for incoming calls, and 1 for outgoing calls. iphone has 1 section for recent calls (incoming and outgoing), and 1 for missed calls. and yes, it is only like two more clicks to check the history of that specific call, but it still pisses me the fuck off.

in hind sigt, i wish i would've at least considered the g1 a little more.

That would piss me right off. It something so simple they could include in a firmware update too.

as for the battery life issues, you can now get a case that has a battery built into it so it basically doubles your battery life. you can charge the phone, and the case battery through the same port, as well as sync up to your system.

this isn't anything a common usb-enabled phone couldn't handle, which includes every non-iphone device mentioned thus far.

as far as battery life i'm curious as to whether you're going out into the fucking wilderness for long periods of time. if you are, i suggest a blackberry curve or bold... or something with a kevlar case; not something as weak and fickle as a touchscreen phone with massive multimedia abilities (battery drains) like what's been mentioned. if you're not, there's no need to worry about whether the phone can get 32 straight hours of juice.

in addition there's the matter of digital rights horseshit that itunes forces on you. i can take my blackberry to any computer, plug it in, swap music files with damn near any media player (with manager) or windows explorer. how easy is it to swap files using itunes?

seriously, stick with verizon, don't go to the fucking pretentious cock-smuggling dark side, get something else. if you must leave verizon get the g1; google doesn't suffocate independent developers with bullshit stipulations limiting what they can and cannot do with applications.

and if you're wondering why claydon is so pro-apple in every goddamn thread (and some that don't) that mentions the word apple or mac, it's because steve jobs is standing right behind him with his hand in his back pocket huntin' for his wallet... and by hand i mean cock, and by back pocket i mean ass, and by wallet i mean soul.

If you already have a Touch, I wouldn't bother with the iPhone, get a phone that does something different, and some things better than the iPhone since you get most of the iPhone benefits in a Touch.

I was thinking about the Samung Eternity, besides the people I know who got the IPhone had problems
Button broke off, screen goes dead, crashes when sync with computer
But you might get lucky and have no problems.
