Flowery Branch — Falcons (http://www.ajc.com/falcons/content/sports/falcons/index.html?cxntlid=linkr) quarterback Matt Ryan (http://projects.ajc.com/topics/sports/falcons/matt-ryan/?cxntlid=linkr) has a new nickname.
“I have to tell him congrats and that his new name is ROY,” veteran defensive end John Abraham (http://stats.ajc.com/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=ajc&page=nfl/teams/061/playeraaa.aspx?id=783,team=061?cxntlid=linkr) said.

That’s ROY as in Rookie of the Year.
Ryan, who helped guide the Falcons (http://www.ajc.com/falcons/content/sports/falcons/index.html?cxntlid=linkr) to an improbable second-place finish in the NFC South and a playoff berth, was named the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Year on Tuesday.

“It’s pretty exciting,” Ryan said when told he won the award before practice. “It’s a great honor and to tell you the truth, I’m pretty humbled by it.”

Ryan was a hit from the beginning of the season.
He became the first Falcons (http://www.ajc.com/falcons/content/sports/falcons/index.html?cxntlid=linkr) rookie quarterback to start a season opener since Steve Bartkowski in 1975.
“I’m very proud of Matt’s accomplishments, accelerated maturity and very evident leadership skills while at the helm in his first year as a professional quarterback,” Falcons (http://www.ajc.com/falcons/content/sports/falcons/index.html?cxntlid=linkr) general manager Thomas Dimitroff said.
Ryan’s first pass as a Falcon went for a 62-yard touchdown to Michael Jenkins in the season opener against Detroit.

“The season seems like a blur,” Ryan said. “It seems like it went by so fast, but I’ve just really tried to take it in stride and not get caught up in the things that have happened this year.

“I’ve just tried to stay focused week-in and week-out. I think that’s helped in a lot of areas this year.”
After the opening pass, Ryan didn’t slow down as he played well beyond his years on most Sundays.

So who do you guys have for the other awards?

I got Mike Smith for Coach, Thom Dimitroff Exec and Burner Turner edging Peyton for MVP.
Mayo for Defensive Rookie, Harrison ahead of Haynesworth for DPOY and Pennington for comeback.

Don't be a homer, Tua.

I think Smith and Dimitroff deserve it, but the team in Miami may have something to say about it.

And Peyton has the MVP locked up, I think. Turner should get Top 3 though. And Mayo should get DROY, but Lofton should get votes.

So Matt Ryan's Rookie of the Year. Great. Now I need him to go to Arizona and not throw picks that cost the Falcons to the game.

I'd be interested to know why Peyton seems to be such a certain MVP pick. He had a perfectly nice year but 4000 yards, high 20s TDs, 10ish INTs is a pretty normal year for him. I was randomly looking at Philip Rivers page, what about him? More yards (7, but hey), more TDs, fewer INTs, and the "lead his team to the playoffs" storyline where Indy had a bit more of a buffer.

Maybe because no one likes him?

Really. The world hates Phil Rivers. He could throw 60 TDs and I'd vote against him.

He's definitely a dick. I just thought it was interesting. I know absolutely nothing about the NFL, you could tell me Osi Umenyora (however you spell it) was due the MVP and I'd believe you. I just found it interesting that Peyton in a pretty normal Peyton season was such a frontrunner.

I don't get why Peyton is being given MVP consideration either. He's had much better years.

But I know Rivers won't get it, he has a bad public persona. Wrongly given to him, but still.

Maybe its because the Colts have won 9 games in a row and Peyton is the reason why seeing as the defense is worse than last year and they have had a 100 yard rusher exactly once? Its not all about stats (and its not like 4000 yards, 27 TDs, and a 95.0 rating isn't good), he's absolutely carried the team.

And Rivers hasn't? With LT's down season and the Chargers riding a far thinner margin to the playoffs?

Not to mention a terrible defense that can't even put a decent pass rush against a line of scarecrows.

Or, for that matter, Chad Pennington?

No MVP love for Purple Jesus? He led the league in rushing on a team with no passing game and a shitty defense, and helped take his team to the playoffs.

I never said Rivers didn't deserve consideration. He does. I was responding to this:

By stating why Manning deserves consideration for a multitude of reasons. They're both good candidates. But arguing that Rivers is deserving because of a "thin playoff margin" is BS. The Colts won 9 straight and didnt have to worry about it, don't hold winning against Peyton. And LT's down year is still 1500+ total yards and 12 TDs. Compare that to Addai. Indy had the worst yard per carry average in the league. Just saying.

I think the idea of the playoffs being a factor in the first place is dumb for the same reason I do with baseball. But it makes sense that you should get more credit for winning if your team needed every last one of those wins to make it in.

then why would you nominate Chad Pennington and his 19 TDs? Im not saying hes not a candidate...but if winning doesnt matter, statistically Pennington isnt that impressive (great rating, not much else)

Because I'm a homer and we're talking about who are real candidates not rightful ones. Also, being efficient is a pretty big deal. I'd way rather have Chad Pennington this past year over Brett Favre, for example.

Seconded, the only knock on the guy was that he had a small fumbling problem but he was still able to perform when teams were focusing on him.
