View Full Version : US: GEORGE WALLACE IS ALIVE?!?!

Whew. George Wallace is still deceased (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Wallace).
But I couldn’t come up with any other explanation for why leading Democrats in the U.S. Senate are planning to physically block Illinois Senator-designate Roland Burris from entering the Senate chamber (http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/politics/2008/12/31/keilar.burris.whats.next.cnn) if he shows up to work on Tuesday:
Burris will not be allowed on the Senate floor, according to this aide and a Senate Democratic leadership aide. (http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2009/01/01/aides-democrats-have-plan-if-burris-shows-up/)
The aide familiar with Senate Democratic leaders’ plans said if Burris tries to enter the Senate chamber, the Senate doorkeeper will stop Burris. If Burris were to persist, either trying to force his way onto the Senate floor or refusing to leave and causing a scene, U.S. Capitol Police would stop him, said the aide.
“They (police) probably won’t arrest him” but they would call the sergeant-at-arms,” the aide said.
Burris is a black man. If he’s seated in the Senate, he’ll be the only African-American there. Does Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (pictured above) really want to go there?
Yes, I know Rod Blagojevich is a sleazeball (http://deceiver.com/2008/12/09/prisoner-4617278-blagojevich/). But he’s also legally the Governor of Illinois. It’s his job to appoint someone to take Barack Obama’s place in the Senate. And nobody with any juice in Illinois seems ready (http://www.chicagobreakingnews.com/2008/12/court-refuses-to-hear-blagojevich-fitness-case.html) to take that power away from him.
Which leaves us with Senate Democrats looking very much like George Wallace, standing at a University of Alabama schoolhouse door (http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2003/06/11/national/main558016.shtml), barring the way for the first black students to attend the de-segregated “white” school.
Just a few months after rallying “people of color” to the causes of Hope and Change, maybe this isn’t the most intellectually consistent thing for Democrats to be doing. I’m just saying.
p.s. George Wallace was also a Democrat. I had forgotten until just now.
Democrats: Oh SHIT!!! We misplayed the Race card!!! FUCK FUCKFUCK!!!!
And this is not a "Republican Smear" tactic even...Congressman Bobby Rush bascially said anyone who doesn't support Burris is racist.
So now we have party infighting where the Black Democrats in congress are calling the white democrats in the Senate racist...and I am loving it...
I can't wait for the Tater's Spin on this!
Let's check it off if this is a good story.
1. Corrupt Democrats - Yep!
2. Democrat plays the Race Card - Yep!
3. Black man uses race as guilt leverage- Yep!
4. Democrats playing the race card, and defending it! - Yep!
Best Quote Yet!
A day after making racially charged remarks warning critics of Roland Burris's appointment to the U.S. Senate to "not hang or lynch the appointee as you try to castigate", Bobby Rush...

Another side note to the typical hypocrisy of the Democratic party....
Legally I don’t see any reason Blago would not be allowed to name a sucessor, but I do have a problem with the Governor’s of Illinois and New York naming replacements of the identical demographic.
If being a Woman isn’t Hillary Clinton’s most important qualification, why appoint a woman with no relevant experience/qualifications (Kennedy) to replace her?
If being Black isn’t Obama’s most important qualification, why are all three of Blago’s potential candidates (Jarrett, JJackson Jr, and Burris) all black?
If being Black ins’t Obama’s most important qualification, why are all four of Obama’s preferred candidates black?
If a white person had said “Make sure the replacement is white”, or a gay person had said “Make sure the replacement is gay”, or a Jew said “Make sure the replacement is Jewish”, the general public would be up in arms.
Its just completely inconsistent with the public election concept of picking the best person for the job.
Bobby Rush is a pretty obvious idiot. The suggestion that his opinion represents all Democrats suggests you are as well.
It's also pretty damn obvious the Democrats simply want to make it clear for their distaste with Blago's corruption. But hey, keep trying to tie it to race.
I also like how you simultaneously knock Blago while also using him to say that all Democrats also feel the need to fill a quota. If all Democrats are what Bobby Rush and Rod Blago-spelling are then all Republicans are Pat Robertson and Phil Gramm.

lol, I am not tying it to race, another democrat brought it up.
I am sure that the entire thing IS based on the corruption...but common sense almost always loses to the race card.
I just enjoy you guys getting a taste of your own medicine. Bullshit accusations about race.

jesus. this state is fucking retarded.
the only reason they're trying to stop burris is because they're unsure of how to handle blago, and they haven't (correctly or properly) investigated his corrupt ass yet. it's got nothing to do with race. fucking christ. i thought taters was in law, not the news. enough of this horseshit already.
burris is just as qualified as anyone else to take that seat, and there's no reason why he shouldn't. the only reason it's being questioned is because blago is being so fucking maverick right now that anything he touches is automatically suspect. it's almost suicide in illinois politics right now to have your name uttered by blago, so what's burris to do when he's tapped by blago to replace barack?

I agree with you. But I love the fact that the party is canabilizing its own. The Race card gets played so often that it was just a knee-jerk reaction. It is hilarious to see the left actually step back and look at it and then actually think about it since it was played at them this time.
If those were republicans barring the only black guy, and even if he wasn't qualified and was a convicted felon, there would be riots in the Streets and the 24 hours news network would be running this story until the Pulitzer prizes just fell from the sky.

Oh Boy! He keeps Going!
As for Rush, in his interview this morning, he harkened to the days of segregation and the civil rights battles in Little Rock, Ark., and in Alabama in the 1950s and 1960s in warning the U.S. Senate Democratic majority shouldn't try to block Burris.
"You know, the recent history of our nation has shown us that sometimes there could be individuals and there could be situations where schoolchildren -- where you have officials standing in the doorway of schoolchildren," Rush said. "You know, I'm talking about all of us back in 1957 in Little Rock, Ark. I'm talking about George Wallace, Bull Connor and I'm sure that the U.S. Senate don't want to see themselves placed in the same position."

I don't understand what you're trying to argue. They aren't barring him because he's black, they're barring him because he's Blago's choice of replacement. Who just happens to be black. If he were white, they'd be doing the same thing.
It has nothing to do with Burris, it's Blago that they are ultimately pulling against. This article is trying to connect two things that have nothing to do with each other.

What I am trying to argue...I am not really arguing here. I am more pointing out the silliness of the left and thier obsession with race.
The Article is doing what is called "reporting". They are reporting what Congressman Bobby Rush is saying about this situation.
And Bullshit. If Newt Gingrich was barring a black man from the Senate, regardless of the reason, you would be in here bitching and moaning about Racist Republicans.
People on the left want race to be the number one factor in every thing, and now it backfired.
I haven't seen one republican quoted on this yet. They are just sitting back and laughing, or, could it be, working on real issues?!?!

I do not understand why the Senate Democrats believe they have any legal right to bar Burris from the Senate.
Blago, while under indictment (which means, innocent until proven guilty), is the legal governor of Illinois. The legal governor of Illinois has the sole right and duty to appoint anyone to fill a vacant Senate seat. He has made that appointment.
So, I ask: What right does anyone in the Senate have to bar Burris from taking his seat, unless they can show that he is not eligible to be a Senator or that Blago is not the legal governor? Merely hating Blago, or the understanding that anyone Blago appoints is as radioactive as nuclear waste, does not give any Senator the right to bar Burris from taking his legally-appointed seat.
Edit: I don't think race has anything to do with this; it is the fact that he was appointed by Blago.

No, you did bring it up here. No one was mentioning it.
On the topic -
Burris will go through. Because the blago thing is still being figured out, and will be for a long time, and they HAVE to put someone in his seat and it damn sure wont be anyone friendly with the repubs, itll be him.
The only way I dont see him going through would be if he himself sits out. The dems wont force him out. Why? Because they dont have to. Repubs didnt do the same with any of their NUMEROUS scandalized senators. Yea, the huffed and puffed, but backed down when crunch time came in (except for the case with craig).
Burris will sit. Then he'll lose the next election.

anyone trying to stop them at this point in time would be stupid, as they'd face legal action by two successful lawyers (both blago and burress are lawyers).
anyone attempting to use a race card in this debate is doing so merely to grab headlines.

*Sigh*
I think it is obvious to everyone why they would want to block him, that they really can't do it, and he will get in.
I am just proving that most of the time when the race card is played, it is outrageously out of place. We all know this has NOTHING to do with race. It has everything to do with being associated with scandal.
All of a sudden, when faced with a black man calling the Democratic Senators "racist" and telling them not to "Lynch" Burris, we step back and go oh, maybe this isn't racist. Where as, if this was a republican group doing the same thing, Tater's would be calling for assasination and Clayton and myself would be trying to explain that it has nothing to do with race...

Using force to block him would be idiocy. They just need to use legal channels to do it, if they want to. The last thing the Democrats want right now is to somehow mar Obama's inauguration. This needs to have the "return to Camelot" type of feel to it, so that Obama gets as lengthy a honeymoon period as possible. Lord knows he'll need it.

they'll stop just short of provoking blago. this whole thing reeks of, "fuck blago". i gotta give him this, though: he's got some fucking sand doing this shit in the face of a pending indictment and federal investigation, but honestly, in typical illinois fashion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Ryan#Scandals.2C_trial_and_conviction), he's par for the fucking course (http://www.ccadp.org/news-ryan2003.htm).

If the only reason he's being blocked is because he was appointed by Blago, then that's a stupid reason to block him. If he's actually a qualified candidate, let him in. Why create a tangent issue when the real problem is the douche bag in the Bob's Bigboy haircut.

blago's motivation to go ahead with his appointment despite everything else drives this situation. no one's sure what the fuck is going on, so they just want to effectively "pause" everything until they can get a handle. unfortunately it's being mismanaged to fuck, and there's nothing legally barring this guy from taking his seat in the senate.

"What the fuck is going on" is that Blago is still the governor. No one has removed him. The Legislature may want Blago to just "pause" or resign, but he ain't going to do it. He called their bluff and the legislature did nothing. It seems like all of Illinois wants him removed, but no one has to balls to impeach him. Likely, that is due to the fact that he is just indicted, not convicted. While I assume (because I don't know the Illinois impeachment process) that the legislature would hold its own impeachment trial, for some reason, no one wants to do it.
Now, why would that be? Could be, no one has the balls to do it. But, you would think, given the phone transcripts, the impeachment conviction would be a slam-dunk. So, what else? Could be Blago knows too much or has the goods on enough people or that there are enough dirty legislators that everyone is just sort of shuffling their feet, whistling, hoping that this all just goes away. I vote the latter.
And Blago, being the narcissist that he is, is telling everyone "Fuck you, I ain't resigning. Come and get me." He has got to be laughing his ass off at the politicians. (Of course, he's also gotta be scared shitless about going to prison, but as to still being governor, he's laughin'.)
