My old man was the personal aide and speechwriter to two German presidents, a chancellor, and two foreign ministers. The big speeches are prepared with a meticulous attention usually reserved for invasion plans: You do NOT want to fuck those up. If you can get St Paul's opinion on something as big as this, you WILL go get it.

show me another U.S president who submitted them to historians before reading it. clinton did not. and to submit them to the same person who is going to be grading him is like asking your english lit teacher to come over to your house to proofread your term paper before turning it in to her the next day

It is a defining racial moment, nothing "supposedly" about it. This mans grandparents would not have been allowed to sit with their white peers in class, or drink from the same drinking fountain as them. How is this not a huge step in the right direction?
And people are going to praise Obama for taking this country in just a small facet of the right direction, since we've been shit on for the last 8 years.

Politicians can't really do anything. The citizenry does. Presidents don't build countries, win wars, or fix economies; people do. So the best that a politician can actually do is inspire people to get off their arse and get to work. He cannot order, he cannot show how, all he can do is inspire.
So, at a time when people are supposed to be fed up with politics, disillusioned, apathetic, what have you, the ability to draw a crowd of millions and move billions more is pretty impressive in itself.

No, I'll give him 4 years. I want him to be the best president in the history of the United States. He basically has Carte Blanche, and pretty much complete support. Kind of like Bush after 9/11.... Let's just hope he does a better job with that power.
Now, if he does a good job, I'll be more excited about his re-election than this election.

Obama could be amazing. Obama could be a complete bust. We really have very little information either way. There are a ton of good points for him, especially work ethic, determination, and charisma.
But, I'm not going to go ape-shit, give complete immunity, and write a blank check to someone, just because he's black. I'm not going to treat his inauguration like white smoke is coming out of the Capitol. I personally must say I was pretty impressed with the inaugural speech. I disagree with the pundits and others who say his speech was lacking, I found it very uplifting and positive. I can only hope that his presidency can match his address.
The only parts I really had issues with were probably Aretha Franklin, she is horrible, fat and sounded like shit. The other part I thought was fail was the benediction. It seemed to be somewhat contradictory to the message Obama gave in his speech.
All in all, out of all the inaugurals I have witnessed it was probably one of the top 2.

Actually what looked like happened was that Obama began to recite his part before Roberts was done with the whole part. That threw Roberts off and from that point on they were both fucked up. \
Of course that is completely irrelevant and any argument about it completely ignores the message that Obama was trying to get across in his inaugural. The fact of the matter is whether he fucks up a speech or doesn't, he is still the president for at least the next 4 years.
I will oppose him when I disagree and give him kudos when I agree with him, but I will not call him stupid, argue petty bullshit that has no bearing on his presidency, or demean the office of the President by displaying the sort of disrespect that Bush was subject to for 8 years.
I simply look at it the same way I did with senior officers in the military. You salute and show respect to the rank and office not the man.
As far as Pelosi goes though, fuck her.

I'm not gonna go back and read 18 pages of this thread to see if this stuff has been mentioned before. Because I'm lazy. And fuck you.
At any rate, I thought his speech was excellent, as I expected it would be. A few random thoughts:
1. I appreciated that he thanked George W. Bush's years of service, but at the same time excoriated several of his most damaging policies during the speech.
2. I thought it was very classy of him to walk the old first couple to their helicopter. I don't remember - did Bush do this with Clinton in 2000? Is such a gesture typical during a transition of power?
3. What blew me away the most was when Obama said, "we are a nation of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus — and non-believers." Has any President EVER included non-believers in that kind of statement? Talk about a far cry from our former President, Bush senior, who said once when interviewed, "I don't know that atheists should be considered as citizens, nor should they be considered patriots. This is one nation under God."
4. I am moved by the prospect of seeing young children living in the White House for the first time in almost 50 years.
5. I can't believe Justice Roberts screwed up administering the oath. It's only 35 words long, and you should know it backwards and forwards, you dolt.
6. While I sympathize with Mr. Cheney, who hurt his back while moving boxes recently and is now confined to a wheelchair by a doctor's orders, I couldn't help but recognize the symbolism and the irony that it represented during this transition of power.
7. Unless my math is wrong, Obama used the word "I" three times, and "we" sixty.

i disagree. the fumbling of the swearing in lightened things a bit. it wasn't a perfect ceremony, but it was an honest one.
people are celebrating today because a black man (halfsie, whatever) now holds the highest office in the land. that's great progress.
furthermore, whether he's done anything or not, he's become the symbol for this country's general populace banding together to incite change. unlike previous presidents the things that he says feel sincere, he's sure of himself, and he's strong. thus he's a popular president; a rockstar.
there's nothing wrong with people being happy and excited about an event that could very well be a great turning point in getting this country back on track both domestically and within the global community. and if he turns out not to be everything the people expected of him then we'll head back to the booths in 2012 to cast a new vote for someone else.
let this day be what it is: a possible turning point.

given the lack of civility by most people I would not be surprised.
Just watched it. That was a very good speech, and anybody whining about him already should go eat a dick. As long as he remains as pragmatic and sensible as he has sounded since the election, you guys can deal with 4 years of center-left rule.
Considering that most of Bush's important speeches were mainly about foreign policy and democratization, I found this part the most interesting:
Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.
We are the keepers of this legacy. Guided by these principles once more, we can meet those new threats that demand even greater effort—even greater cooperation and understanding between nations. We will begin to responsibly leave Iraq to its people, and forge a hard-earned peace in Afghanistan. With old friends and former foes, we will work tirelessly to lessen the nuclear threat, and roll back the specter of a warming planet. We will not apologize for our way of life, nor will we waver in its defense, and for those who seek to advance their aims by inducing terror and slaughtering innocents, we say to you now that our spirit is stronger and cannot be broken; you cannot outlast us, and we will defeat you.
For we know that our patchwork heritage is a strength, not a weakness. We are a nation of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus—and non-believers. We are shaped by every language and culture, drawn from every end of this Earth; and because we have tasted the bitter swill of civil war and segregation, and emerged from that dark chapter stronger and more united, we cannot help but believe that the old hatreds shall someday pass; that the lines of tribe shall soon dissolve; that as the world grows smaller, our common humanity shall reveal itself; and that America must play its role in ushering in a new era of peace.
To the Muslim world, we seek a new way forward, based on mutual interest and mutual respect. To those leaders around the globe who seek to sow conflict, or blame their society's ills on the West—know that your people will judge you on what you can build, not what you destroy. To those who cling to power through corruption and deceit and the silencing of dissent, know that you are on the wrong side of history; but that we will extend a hand if you are willing to unclench your fist.
Thats good shit, right there.
The part about "not missiles or tanks" is bullshit, though

Talk about damned if you do, damned if you don't. He tosses a bone to the atheists and is criticised for pandering; he says nothing, he gets branded as a Jesus guy.
OMG, Obama got sworn in with his right hand raised. Bastard hates lefties. Impeach now!

I mean, with half a sentence, he silenced a shitload of political critics who, with all the quoting of Scripture and MLK (who, let's not forget, was a man of God) on this day, would have been quick to brand him as just another Jayzus freak, without alienating the vast Chrsitian majority.
I believe the word here is "adroit"...
How gauche.
HaHA. I made a french joke.

Apparently both needed immediate medical attention.
Sen Kennedy may have suffered from a seizure.

Kennedy, 76, reportedly suffered convulsions at the luncheon. A Capitol police officer stood up and said medical attention was needed.

I
Its because Roberts fucked up the recital. Obama quoted responded tot he correct version of it, Roberts mixed it up (as explained when he reworded it).

he sent his speech to presidential historian doris kearns goodwin for her thought before he even gave it....wow. someone is really concerned about his place in history
Or really doesn't trust microsoft spellcheck.
What's with the purple ties and scarves?
During the campaign, he talked about purple america, a mix of the red and blue divisions of the country.
I love that Obama felt it necessary to pander to the 3% of the country who doesn't believe in god.
He cited the three major monotheisms, a major non-monotheism, and those who may have no religious belief, but can still contribute, and have contributed as secular citizens. That's not pandering, that's making clear that the common cause of the country may share some of the ideals of some faiths, but it does not lie with any faith.
But, why the fuck should I be this excited over a motherfucker that has never done anything? Just because he's black? What the fuck does that have to do with me?
At the time he was born, his father might have been killed in some areas of the country for exercising the right to vote. Only fifty years on, he managed to become president, as much, if not more, a testament to his abilities as it is the openmindedness of the citizenry.
He managed to attain the highest office of the land despite belonging to a race that's often been persecuted. You've had the privilege of being white all your life and you can't even come up with one interesting thing to say.

Word is Obama has already raised taxes by 75% and increased the size of government 17-fold. Plus he has disbanded the military, aborted 30,000 fetuses, bombed a church, sold Alabama to Kenya, presided over eight gay wedding-orgies, and masturbated to a signed photo of Lenin.

Not picking anyone out...but I find it funny that conseravtives bitched daily about how unfair Bush was treated by the "liberal media" and all this and that...and yet here we are basically a handful of hours into Obama's presidency, and those conservatives are nitpicking at shit.
Pot. Meet. Kettle.

This half-meter resolution image of the United States Capitol, Washington D.C. was collected by the GeoEye-1 satellite on Jan. 20, 2009 to commemorate the Inauguration of President Barack Obama. The image, taken through high, whispy white clouds, shows the masses of people attending the Inaugural Celebration.Link (http://www.geoeye.com/CorpSite/gallery/detail.aspx?iid=220&gid=1)

So how long into this administration is John Stewart going to wait to slam Barak? A day? A week? A month? A year? A full term? Longer?
If you guessed less than a day, you might be right....

that clip was spot-on. it is called BIAS. that works both ways. Bush people are already at 3rd base when Bush starts speaking and no matter what he says they are not going back to first. and it is the exact thing with Obama supporters.

Well all doubts can be put aside. Obama was just readministered the oath by Chief Justice Roberts in the White House. So any doubts about his legality concerning the oath should be put to bed now.

Yes, incorrectly reciting the oath means that it may not be valid. Obama isn't the first to retake the oath in private, he is at least the 3rd and there may be more.

Try as they might, this is never going away now:
How many members of the Harvard Law Review does it take to administer the oath of office? Apparently more than two.
