Within their sport. Obviously some sports (NBA, NFL) will dominate other sports (*cough* baseball *cough*) in terms of general athleticism on most days.

and Wilt Chamberlain ftw

I know nothing about basketball so maybe it's wrong, but BBall ref (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/c/chambwi01.html) lists Wilt at 7'1".

Bill Russell might be the best player in NBA history. Don't start with that Jordan garbage. Russell did it first and Russell did it more. The things that werent on the stat sheets the he did are ridiculous.

11x NBA Champion (1957, 1959, 1960, 1961, 1962, 1963, 1964, 1965, 1966, 1968, 1969)
5x NBA MVP (1958, 1961–1963, 1965)
12x NBA All-Star (1958–1969)
3x All-NBA First Team Selection (1959, 1963, 1965)
8x All-NBA Second Team Selection (1958, 1960–1962, 1964, 1966–1968)
1x NBA All-Defensive First Team Selection (1969)
1x NBA All-Star Game MVP (1963)
NBA's 50th Anniversary All-Time Team
NBA 35th Anniversary Team
NBA 25th Anniversary Team

Yeah, he was just the leader and defensive anchor of the most dominant team ever... 11 rings in 13 years just boggles the fucking mind, considering he played against players like Wilt, Walt Bellamy and Nate Thurmond ...

Wilt got the first team honours most of the time because he got the numbers. Russ got the championships. I think Russ didn't mind.

If Wilt was the better player as measured by numbers doesn't it stand to reason that Wilt on the Celtics would have just as many, if not more, rings?

I've never understood the "Team Championships as a measure of individual accomplishments" metric. Plus, given the dominance of the Celtics and the crumminess of the DBacks, I think RJ has an argument that he came closer to truly "individually" winning a championship (he and Schilling).

Don't forget that Russell was Player/Coach after Red retired.

Red built those great Celtics teams around Russell, and most of his teammates ended up in the Hall of Fame, too. Wilt would never have fitted into that system; he went for his numbers, dunking his teammates' shots because there was no offensive goaltending back then. Russell was the supreme team player. He could go for 40 points when his team needed him to, but he didn't feel the need to do that for himself. Why do you think Auerbach passed the C's coaching reigns to him?

To be fair to Wilt, it was very hard to build a team around a guy who averaged 50 points per game for a season and took a third of his team's shots. The two times somebody managed to do it ('67 Sixers, '72 Lakers), the results were nothing short of spectacular.
