View Full Version : Favorite bands from Manchester?

In the late 70s through the 80s, Manchester gave rise to many great bands, such as The Smiths and Joy Division. Factory Records and The Hacienda nightclub certainly played a big role as well, eventually sparking the Madchester scene.

Who are some of your favorites? Feel free to elaborate on their importance in music history if appropriate.

Err, Manchester was a particularly important city in the development of a distinct sound. This is a relevant thread.

So what? This subforum has, like, 2 threads that ever get used. That would be an improvement.

If you enjoyed that, check out the film 24 Hour Party People. There's a bit of overlap, and depicts the rise of the Madchester scene.

Overturned. It's the fucking music thread, let 'em talk about music. It's not like this place gets used that much anyways.

My only real exposure to the scene is through 24HPP...but Happy Mondays sounded nice.

Perhaps this thread should be renamed The Manchester Scene as to put an end to the moaning, and more of a focus on discussion of the scene itself, and not so much a "favorites~!@#" thread.

Morrissey!

Which, by proxy, is an extension of The Smiths.

His new album comes out soon, a video was just released within the last week or so.

I love Morrissey's lyrics, and I'm a huge Smiths fan, but I don't follow his solo career too much.

The Smiths were probably the most influential band of all time? Moreso than The Beatles or The Spice Girls? I am actually a huge fan of The Smiths and having just heard Morrisseys new album (Years of Refusal) it becomes so much more apparent that he needs the genius that is Johnny Marr by his side to make his music better than ordinary...a rousing tremelo over-dub here or a haunting finger-picked staggered arpeggio there?

To be honest Manchester never had a music scene? They had a drug scene which many bands took advantage of such as The Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, Oasis (Beatles tribute band) and it paid off well for them and Tony Wilson.

Agreed. "Women Who Love Men Who Love Drugs" is one of my all time favorites.

As for as older bands go, I gotta go with The Stone Roses.
