View Full Version : MLB: Fantasy Baseball '09: Year of the Markakis

Draven X 23

Fantasy baseball is starting up soon so lets get some discussions going. I will not be commishing my keeper leagues this year. So consider them dead. Most of the people have disappeared anyway.

I was checking out MLB.coms rankings and I have an issue. Look at these 5x5 'projected' stats.

Player 1 - .300 102 R 22 HR 95 RBI 24 SB
Player 2 - .317 108 R 25 HR 106 RBI 17 SB

Both are OF. But player 1 is ranted 33rd overall while player 2 is at 37th. Sure its close but is 7 SB worth more then 17 points in average, 6 R, 3 HR and 11 RBI?

So who would you take higher Rios or Markakis?

Swurgen

SB always overrated in FB. Probably internally gave guys rankings points for over 15 and over 20 and so on so it looked more pronounced.

They predict him at: .270 87 R 27 HR 91 RBI 8 SB

Rios obviously has more SB potential. Realizing his power has always been the issue. Do you want 30-15 or 20-40? If they were both in the 3, I'm guessing rbi/runs wouldn't be far apart.

anyone NOT get invites to all three leagues I mentioned below? if you were in one or more last year and didn't get an invite, let me know.

for my first time looking at the Yahoo! rankings, I'm surprised Sizemore is a top 10 player over the likes of Cabrera, Hamilton, Howard, and so forth. Victorino in the top 50? at least closers aren't ranked as high, which is always a good thing since it seems one top closer always seems to screw people (Putz being a prime example from last year's rankings).

I'd love some comments/notes on things to look for on my recently drafted fantasy team. LOTS of lineup spots, notably 2 C spots, a CI and MI spot, and 2 Util. 14-team, 7x7 league with the following stats:

Hitters: R, RBI, AVG, SB, HR, OPS, XBH
Pitchers: W, SV, K, ERA, WHIP, K/BB, QS

C: Joe Mauer
C: Matt Wieters
1B: Lance Berkman
2B: Mark DeRosa
3B: Chipper Jones
SS: Jimmy Rollins
CI: Adam LaRoche
MI: Mike Fontenot
OF: Manny Ramirez (fell to the 4th round, took a flier)
OF: Magglio Ordonez
OF: Choo Shin-Soo
OF: JD Drew
OF: Mike Cameron
Util: Jim Thome
Util: Marco Scutaro

SP: James Shields
SP: Joba Chamberlain
SP: Ryan Dempster
SP: Justin Duchscherer
SP: Joe Saunders
RP: Matt Capps
RP: Chad Qualls
RP: Hong-Chih Kuo
RP: Cory Wade

BN: Aaron Cook
BN: Jorge Campillo
BN: Taylor Buchholz
BN: Joel Zumaya
BN: Ryan Spilborghs
BN: Ben Zobrist

I took several fliers (Manny, Wieters, Shin-Soo to a lesser degree) and have a pretty terrible relief core, but I feel pretty good about that team. Whaddya think?

Not a fan of Drew. And I am not behind the hype of Joba. Also Scutaro is not exactly a great use of Util. But it looks like it was a butt load of draft picks. So seems solid. Can't really tell though vs how other teams drafted.

Cabrera was a big fat bomb for me last year. I'd take Sizemore over him this year although both are more second rounders to me.

Are we going to run all the leagues through this one thread?

I say overall, you're right ... Cabrera was just a headache to own last year. however, if you consider his post 2008 All-Star stats, you might think otherwise: .302 AVG, .601 SLG, .951 OPS, 21 HRs, 70 RBIs. his struggles in the first half killed him: .284 AVG, .489 SLG, .837 OPS, 16 HRs, 57 RBIs.

I figured to make things simple and keep all the registration info for all three leagues in one thread. eventually, we'll make a thread for each league very soon so we don't confuse keepers/rules for which league and what not.

I know I've received some issues (chances are if you have a new email) with getting invites if you're a previous manager in one of the three leagues. anyone else having issues? the Mafia league only has two people signed up so far: me and Pats.

I'm a big MLB fan but have never done any of the fantasy sports. I've been tempted too but I'm worried I'd start paying too much attention to everyone's stats. My brain is cluttered with enough useless trivia; and I don't have many baseball friends. I know some guys that will watch it, but they do so very casually.

Is it hard for you guys not to just snag everyone on your favorite team?

I am hereby retiring from active Fantasy Sports Competition effective immediately.

Good luck to you all and for the person taking over my squads, you better win it all.

Yahoo official rankings are shit, they have A-Rod above Pujols even though Pujols had more homers, rbi's, a better BA, and isn't coming into the new season with a shitty hip. I don't get it.

Draven X 23
03-10-2009, 12:08 AM
Well Yahoo's ratings were made back in Feb before A-Rods injury. But overall thet usually like A-Rod over Pujols because 3B is pretty weak compared to 1B and A-Rod can hit .300+, 100+ R, 40+ HR, 100+ RBI and steal 20+.

Besides A-Rod only David Wright and Miguel Cabrera are close at 3B. Longoria might be close but most everyone else have only had one great season (Youk) or are on their way down (Chipper). 1B is still pretty stacked after Pujols. And next year M.Cabrera will no longer qualify at 3B.

Yahoo highly ranks scarce position players first, i.e. 2nd baseman, 3rd baseman, shortstops, so on. however, the talent in those infield positions after the first 2-3 rounds isn't that good. you can always snatch a good 1B, so that's why you figure Yahoo would have A-Rod over Pujols initially before his hip injury. they usually take 1-2 weeks to adjust the pre-rankings of fantasy players, so expect A-Rod to fall to mid/late 2nd round.

Draven X 23
03-10-2009, 12:53 PM
As you can see from below 3B is pretty damn thin these days.

12 - 1B hit 29+ HR
4 - 3B hit 29+ HR

5 - 1B hit .300+
3 - 3B hit .300+

5 - 1B Scored 100+ R
3 - 3B Scored 100+ R

11 - 1B with 100+ RBI
5 - 3B with 100+ RBI

1 - 1B with 15+ SB
3 - 3B with 15+ SB

Miguel Cabrera qualifies at both so is counted in both.

With A-Rod out right now I'd take David Wright over Pujols. Unlike Pujols Wright is a 5 tool fantasy guy.

And seriously, how do I get Ludwick in the 7th or 8th Round? Dude has better or the same numbers across the board as Ryan Braun, but goes 6-7 Rounds later. Is it the extra 10 stolen bases?

I just have a noobie question for fantasy baseball, and my league is playing rotisserie style. It's my first year playing. But do you keep the same starters on the roster for the whole week, starting Sunday? Like, you don't switch players around on a day-to-day basis just because some play and others don't on that day, correct? And does the same thing apply to pitchers (meaning you should start those pitchers who make two starts in a given week)?

Draven X 23
04-06-2009, 10:16 AM
Depends on the league you have picked.

Some have you only able to set your line up once a week. Others do not. Some have a innings/games played limit. Others do not.

Check out the rules for your league.

CrazyCarl
04-12-2009, 03:13 PM
Why is Yahoo gay? They have a huge player pool prior to the season starts, so you can draft players like Wieters and LaPorta and Jordan Zimmerman, yet once the season starts and those players go to the minors, they take them out of the pool and you can't draft them anymore.

So you can draft them in one league and then they're missing from any that draft after the season starts.

I never seem to play the right OF combination.

I have
Swish
Carl Crawford
Ichiro
Magglio
Andre Either
and Hunter Pence

No matter what I do I play the wrong guys.

Kinda alleviated by playing Swish at first but not by much.

You have a pretty nice OF. Look around the league and find a guy with 1 stud OF and 2 so-so guys. Try to trade 3 for 1. That way you aren't wasting stats away on the bench. Who do you have at 1B beside Swisher?

I made a deal in my huge keeper league. A few years ago it was 20 people. now we sit at 16. But its still a lot of people. Last year I came in 2nd place in both overall and playoffs.

This year I currently sit tied for 2nd place. A lot of which is thanks to my last pick (23rd round) 2B Aaron Hill.

Today I made a deal with the last place team.

I get:
3B David Wright

He gets:
OF Nick Markakis
SP Scott Kazmir
3B Ryan Zimmerman

I usually give up a lot to get what I want. Here I gave up 2 of my keepers (Kazmir, Markakis) and a very hot hitter in Zimmerman.

But here is what my keeper list looks like now:

SP T.Lincecum (traded for last year)
1B M.Teixeira (traded for 2 years ago)
SS J.Reyes (traded for 2 years ago)
3B D.Wright (Just got)
OF C.Crawford (Drafted this year)

I hated giving up Markakis. Especially since he is the only guys I drafted my first season and still had. Also I think he is a future batting champ.

Depends on the time table for those guys. Normally I just throw in high strikeout RPs. But thats in daily leagues.

It's a H2H daily update league, FWIW.

Time table: Carp is expected back at the end of this month. J-Douche is expected back early June

I'd ditch a couple mediocre starters and add some good RPs. Also it looks like Sherrill is losing his hold on the closers role. He hasn't been good since the end of June of last year.

Well...there aren't any good RPs on the FA list, well...any that would get me some saves.

I could probably trade Paul Maholm and Kyle Lohse to get another RP tho...one guy has Frank Francisco, Jose Valverde, and BJ Ryan on the trade block.

You want Ks. Go pick up a couple non-save RPs. Go look at a guy like Andrew Bailey.

17 InnP 20 Ks 1.53 ERA and .73 WHIP. Also possible to pick up a few saves here and there. Maybe more depending on Oaklands 'pen.

Should I drop Sherrill, or a starter like Maholm/Lohse?

Whichever guy is doing the worst. I'd say Tejada. He has no power this year.

Inge not qualify as a C in your league? If he did I'd put him at C move Reynolds to 3B and find a DH with decent numbers. Napoli is doing fine for a part time catcher.

No...Inge qualifies, but he and Napoli are fucking both swinging huge bats right now.

I hate to fucking let Tejada go when he's owned by 90% of leagues. Is Az-Cab really going to be someone I can trust at 2B/SS in the long run?

Well you can try to trade Tejada and Napoli together and see if you can pick up a solid starter. Someone like Mark Buerhle or Randy Wolf. Then use the free spot on an RP.

Personally I like Javier Vazquez. ERA is a little over 4 but he has 50 Ks in 38 Innings. Maybe do a deal for him.

Randy Wolf is a free agent. It's only a 10 person league.

Really? Wow Cool. Under 4 ERA. Solid K numbers. Whip below 1.10.

If its only 10 people you should be ok with dropping Tejada. No one needs a .280 hitting SS with 5 RBIs.

I ended up dropping Tejada to get Randy Wolf, and then I dropped Kyle Lohse to get Andrew Bailey.

It was down to either Lohse or Maholm...and I just think Maholm has a better chance to be a breakout star this year. Dude's got great stuff. There are plenty of people on the FA list like Lohse though. Fausto Carmona is on the damn FA list for fuck's sake.

What should I do about Sherrill? Is he worth keeping at this point?

Goddamn fucking Yahoo. Left Matt Cain AND Josh Johnson on the bench in one league despite my SPECIFICALLY SETTING PITCHERS last night to ensure everyone was ready (because I've been screwed a lot lately). 2 CG Ws that would've won 2 categories (IP, CG) for me.
