I played a bit of Alien Trilogy on a PSX emulator a few days ago, man that game hasn't aged well.

Quite looking forward to this actually, getting an Alienware laptop delivered sometime next week so that should run it faster than shit off a stick.

I hope they don't fuck this up, now that the film franchise has gone to shit it's only the promise of a decent game that is keeping me interested.

What we heard: In late 2006 (http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/action/alienfps/news.html?sid=6163260), Sega announced that Gearbox Software was developing a first-person shooter based on the 1986 film Aliens. The reception among gamers was understandably ecstatic. First, there was the fact that one of the most influential sci-fi films of all time--the stamp of which can been most noticeably seen on Halo's USNC Marines--was getting a direct game adaptation. Secondly, said adaptation was being done by the well-regarded developer of the Brothers in Arms series, not Fox Interactive, the now-defunct developer of the stillborn turn-of-the-century PlayStation 2 project (http://www.gamespot.com/ps2/action/alienscolonialmarines/news.html?tag=tabs;news) of the same name.
Unfortunately, little has been heard or seen of Aliens: Colonial Marines since it was first revealed. This mystery added credence to this morning's report that the game had been canceled as part of a restructuring at Gearbox that led to as many as 26 layoffs. The reason? Poor performance of the long-in-development Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway, which finally went on sale in September after being delayed for more than a year. Despite solid reviews (http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/action/brothersinarms3/review.html), the game sold a little more than 124,000 copies as of the end of September, according to the NPD Group--a weak debut given the amount of publicity that publisher Ubisoft threw behind it. Samba de Amigo (http://www.gamespot.com/wii/puzzle/sambadeamigo/index.html?tag=result;title;0), Gearbox's relaunch of the classic Sega rhythm franchise, performed even more poorly, selling less than 9,000 units in the week after its September 23rd launch.
The official story: "Aliens isn't canned," said Gearbox president Randy Pitchford in a forum post quoted by Shacknews. "We've made some transformative changes and yes, that's meant some talent changes, but that's not the real story. The true relevance of the story will actually be irrelevant until we release our next game, at which time I hope there will be a lot of interest in what we've done that can produce such results." The "next game" in question is Borderlands (http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/action/borderlands/index.html?tag=result;title;0), the Road Warrior-esque open-world action role-playing game that 2K Games will publish next year.
Bogus or not bogus?: Bogus that the project has been officially canceled. Not bogus that the well-regarded Gearbox is undergoing some tough times--just like the rest of the planet (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20081124/ap_on_bi_ge/citigroup;_ylt=AnMDssIqYp1o9BvB9oZr20QDW7oF).
Whatever happens with Aliens: Colonial Marines, it should be noted that its status is not tied to that of the Aliens role-playing game (http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/rpg/alienrpg/index.html?tag=result;title;0) currently in development at Obsidian Entertainment. Reps for the Southern California-based studio, founded by members of original Fallout developers Black Isle Entertainment, said that work on that game was still in full swing

Chick I work with tells me that her Stepdad works for Gearbox, I would ask if this was axed for real or not but I don't know if she is telling the truth.

Bad news on the Aliens RPG:

Ex-Obsidian staffer's CV confirms Aliens RPG canceled (http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/25/ex-obsidian-staffers-cv-confirms-aliens-rpg-canceled/)

by Justin McElroy (http://www.joystiq.com/bloggers/justin-mcelroy/) { Feb 25th 2009 at 11:31AM }
http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/02/alienssega.jpg

This is never how you want to get confirmation for a story, but we do what we must. Ex-Obsidian designer David Kondor's LinkedIn profile lists his involvement in a "canceled third-person action Aliens RPG (Xbox 360, PS3, & PC)." The listing lends credence to rumors of the game's cancellation, which circulated earlier this month (http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/12/rumor-sega-pulls-funding-on-aliens-colonial-marines-aliens-rp/). We still haven't heard back from Sega for official word, but we've put in another request for comment this morning.

If you're curious about what might have been (but what almost certainly won't be), you can see more details from Kondor's listing right here (http://www.strategyinformer.com/news/3526/ex-obsidians-cv-confirms-aliens-rpg-project-has-been-cancelled).

During E3 2009, Rebellion's Aliens vs. Predator (http://www.1up.com/do/gameOverview?cId=3170354) was on prominent display at Sega's booth. Gearbox's Aliens: Colonial Marines (http://www.1up.com/do/gameOverview?cId=3166459)? Not so much. Despite rumors to the contrary though, it's still very much alive. Gearbox president Randy Pitchford told Kotaku (http://kotaku.com/5291190/aliens-colonial-marines-still-coming-to-ds-too-but-not-this-year) that their take on Aliens was still alive, and would be coming next year. Colonial Marines was announced all the way back in 2006, and was supposed to arrive last year.
Aliens vs Predator will also be arriving in early 2010, with Colonial Marines appearing sometime after that. Pitchford also said that the studio was working on two unannounced games.
Interestingly enough, Pitchford also confirmed that DS version of Aliens: Colonial Marines was in the works, but not by Gearbox. The rumor here is that WayForward Technologies is making a spiritual follow-up to Contra 4.
Between the DS game, Colonial Marines and Aliens vs. Predator, it looks like we'll be getting all the Aliens we can handle in 2010.
