that's one of the things i really enjoy about travelling outside of the US, the old buildings and structures.

The oldest stuff here is 1500's at the absolute earliest, and that's just a fort in florida, for the most part, stuff is 1700 or later.

I just marvel at the magnitude and intricacy involved in some of the places I've been outside of the US

One problem we have is that we expect new churches or renovations to be in a style that is 'historical', I think it's a brave move to try and update the style; a style which in years to come will be loved (probably). We seem so scared of making our mark on the architectural landscape, instead deferring to older styles or making buildings with a 100-150 lifespan.

A cathedral was built for one primary purpose, to symbolise the faith of an entire city, if not country.

Every theological treatise, every interpretation of faith, every exegesis had to culminate in one monument to faith itself. It's built theology, crystallised worship.
