View Full Version : Bands That Jumped The Shark

I suppose I could have called it "Bands that used to be good, but aren't anymore".

Anyway, I've been listening to Tip and Greyest of Blue Skies by Finger Eleven for the last couple of days, and dammit I remember being obsessed with the band back in the day. I've tried listening to Them vs You vs Me and their self titled, but I could never get into them. That Paralyzer song is just bad.

So yeah, respond to the topic.

I'll be the first to declare the obvious. Though the latest album might have them trying to jump back over the shark, Metallica originally jumped for the Choad through St. Anger albums at the very least. They went from entire albums with no bad songs to having a few "ehh...that's not that bad" songs on those albums.

I used to actually like many of the "Nu Metal" bands back in the day, but most of them went to shit after thier first album. System Of A Down, Staind, and Korn come to mind here. I still pop in and enjoy the first album by those three now and then. Also, everything Weezer did after Pinkerton has sucked ass.

The only nu metal band that I think has survived relatively unscathed is Deftones. Their self titled was pretty mediocre, but I think Saturday Night Wrist is as good if not better than Around the Fur and White Pony.

Wow, I was struggling to think of one, but I'm gonna disagree with you here. Being a Sacramento guy, it was hard not to get into the Deftones. I still fucking love Adrenaline and ATF, and WP wasn't bad either....but their s/t was so god damned horrid that I almost gave up on them, and then I thought Saturday Night Wrist was another heaping pile, and I'm pretty much over the Deftones

It took me a loooong time to get into SNW. I listened to it a lot of times before it started growing on me, but once it did, I really started to love it.

Three come to mind.

Creed. I remember rocking the fuck out to their first album, before I knew who Scott Stapp was or how ridiculous he could get. Now I look at that first album and can't believe I own it.

The Offspring. Smash was a fucking ballistic record, and still is, but after Pretty Fly for a White Guy and Original Prankster and You Know You Wanna Hit That, no one in the world takes them seriously at all.

Rob Zombie. White Zombie was an all-time great metal band. Now all of Rob's songs sound exactly the same, and are way too cutsie for my tastes.

Zombie is a good one. We still rock AstroCreep and LaSexorsito at work weekly, but all his "solo" material blows.

I've been that way with almost every Defotnes album, so I know what you mean. Each one is pretty much first listen = this blows.... ten listens later = I fucking love it.

i stopped listening to music for a while as a whole. shortly thereafter i wondered what was so serious about music and had no real good answer.

and what do you take seriously, musically? justin timberlake?

Every successful Metal band has jumped the shark at some point. If they didn't they couldn't have comebacks.

i kinda feel the same way about 98% of punk bands out there. there are a few that have grown and gotten better with time. the rest just sound like angry teens bashing guitars in the basement.

Smashing Pumpkins, remember when they were creative and new? I thought they finally put out another decent song for "The Watchman" but then I discovered its from 1997 rehashed to seem new.

Wham!

I know a huge secret about George Michael, but you won't be hearing any careless whispers from me and that's for sure!

Coldplay used to be really good didn't they until Chris Martin decided to to get down on his knees and blow the rocks off Bono before then going on to save the world? Having said that I think Viva La Vida is better than X&Y, mind you what is isn't?

So a band has jumped the shark because you're daft?

And are you referring to The Beginning is the End is the Beginning used in the trailer for *Watchmen? Because that's not even re-hashed. It was right there, track #15 of the Batman & Robin soundtrack.

Also, Zeitgeist is a pretty good fucking record.

I liked Zeitgeist more than anything they'd put out since Mellon Collie.

I liked Machina a lot, and I know the song and where is came from, it is rehashed. It is the same song remixed and slowed down.
Anything after their breakup has been garbage, I also include the audio offensive Zwan.

You don't fucking get it.

It IS a remix of The End is the Beginning is the End, but it came out at the same bloody time. It's not like they re-did an old song "to seem new" (as you put it) or anything.

I toatlly agree with this one. I can't remember which pile of shit was first, 1984 or OU812, that was the warm up lap in the parking lot for them. I'll hear a lot of grief for this one but I think Limp Bizkit is another. Everything after Three Dollar Bill Ya'll sucks.

Yeah, that's a bright spot. Even some tracks on Tour de france (elektro kardiogram) are good.
But after die mensch maschine it was more about the technology, and less about the creativity.

The Stones should have packed it in around 1980 imo.
Still, for me, jumping the shark has to do with continuing on in ignominy, not just sucking.
If you used to play a stadium and now can't fill a casino, you jumped teh shark.

Metallica. More like MetaSucka. I've had a tough time choking down their last effort.
This could be a pretty long list.
I'd say Britney, but that would be to suggest that I actually know anything about her 'music.'

Bill Paxton

I really hate to say this, but Against Me! jumped the shark with their most recent album. Its not horrible, but its just really forgettable when you compare it to everything before it.

Deftones are amazing. Chino has one of the best voices out there. Hell, I even liked their self-titled album (Battle Axe was a killer track).

Tool jumped the shark after Aenima. I didn't mind the trilogy at the end of Lateralus, but overall the album was just a huge step down for me, and 10,000 Days is garbage.

As for Radiohead, In Rainbows was actually pretty good. I don't agree that they jumped the shark.

Isn't Shark Jumping a desperation move to attempt to revamp a career on a downward spiral?

If this is what we're referring to, I have a few:

Smashing Pumpkins with Zeitgeist and the most recent reunion tour. Billy Corgan is in no mental state to be touring right now, he's just making an ass of himself in front of people paying a lot of money to see him play.

Weezer with both Make Believe and the Red Album. The songs on Maladroit were for the fans, the fans rejected it. Make Believe was written for most Weezer fan's younger sisters.

Jewel released 0304 in 2003, a pop album that departed from her previous singer/songwriter style.

Nelly Furtado teamed up with Timbaland and released the album Loose, which departed from her folk rock style and adopted a sweatier sexier hip-hop and R 'n' B style.
