View Full Version : Rap Artist MOST responsible for the demise of HipHop from street speech to Dancepop

(If you ever were a fan of rap, hiphop, breakbeat, freestyle, breaker music, etc etc)
There is a lot of talk that Rap has now completly fallen off the wagon, and has evolved from an urban music subculture to a poverty lifestyle voice finally to a 'bling bling" materialistic, pointless sythfest sans any point other than saying random rhyming words with no story or point or message, only a beat thatll get played at clubs and get the drunk white women dancing (badly).
If this is the case, what artist(s) do you blame most for the change, if you blame any artist at all.

the only person on gmf that should have that problem is oggie.
If it's not on the poll I'll have to Suge Knight a ******.
Ice Cube and his kids movies is the only one keeping it real.

Î keep wondering, are the black areas of the South made up exclusively of titty bars?
Because that's pretty much what 90% of the music from there is designed for...
You have to consider the medium. Early NY rap was supposed to be played on headphones while riding the train. So you could absorb the lyrics very closely, rewind, and also detect details in the production. The fact was that you decided what you heard and how often. Sure, there were party tracks and groups more dependent on funky beats than lyricism (EPMD come to mind here), but by and large, if you couldn't flow, you were nothing.
Southern rap? Please. Now, the Geto Boys are among my all time faves, Outkast and Goodie MOb brought forward some serious lyrical talent, and certainly, guys like Luda or T.I. can flow (even though the latter seems to have gotten into the ringtone making business lately): However, the rest is strip club music. You don't concentrate on the use pf metaphor and alliteration in lyrics when some ho is bouncing her titties in your face. For all people cared, they could do with lyrics altogether and just go "shake that booty" all the damned tim...
Wait, that is all they do. It's ignorant country-ass shite. Music by idiots for idiots.
The irony obviously being that this is pretty much how rap got started.
Ever since Master P, everybody south of the Mason Dixon appeared to think that a rap sheet was all one needed for a rap career. "I used to slang drugs/Now my shit is pumpin' in the clubs" is pretty much 90% of Southern rap distilled into one sentence. But seriously, the fact that guys like Yung Joc or Lil Wayne are considered the avant-garde of rap these days makes a guy who saw Public Enemy live when they were still relevant sick to his fucking stomach.
Oh yeah, Flava Flav? Fuck you too.

Could not agree more, cept I give exception to UGK...yea, they are drug/stripclub pimping music...but they were probably the only southern group to move away from heavy sythetic sounds and make their flows toward live instruments (about 50% of the time at least)...and it sounded superior to anything else out there.
Plus, they refused to go 'mainstream' through the years to their own financial detriment (and ongoing conflicts with their record company)...they couldnt be sold. A rarity in any music industry.
Oh yea, strip clubs in the south = VERY common, and without the 'classy' of vegas clubs or the cost of northern clubs.

No Limit was pretty fucking bad. They might have even been worse than Lil Jon.
No Limit was pumping out generic BS every 2 weeks for a few years. Master P may not have started it but he kicked off the gay fest to the levels it is now. He showed everyone that you can take beats, ignorant rap, and some catchy hook to the bank. He made a fucking killing off that shit. Once he showed the world you can make your own label and pump out your own generic shit, well it was on. Soon after every video started popping up with some dipshits draped in colors throwing money around.
Had anyone heard of Juvenille when you saw his stupid "HA" video? Fuck no but it didn't stop him from putting 6 digit cars in it. Look at me, dumb ghetto fuck rich as hell. WTF is he saying in that video!?

Everybody here who is saying "MC Hammer" is fucking stupid.
Yes, Hammer did corny, bubble-gum rap over dance beats and went mainstream.
BUT, everybody was aware of that. Who were the biggest rap groups in Hammer's heyday? Public Enemy, De La and NWA. So Hammer might have been successful, but everyone knew that whatever he did was not representative of hip-hop as a whole. He was balanced out.
Also, it's not like that shit hadn't been done before or since. Rapper's Delight is nothing but bubble-gum raps over '70s disco beats, and Puffy did the exact same thing 7-8 years later.
The real problem started when the ostensibly "hard-core" rappers went corny. And as has been said before, that happened when every idiot who'd ever seen a friend's cousin sell some drugs got signed to a major record deal. These guys were just as shitty MCs as Vanilla Ice, but because their rap sheets got more promotion than their rap skills, "realness" took the place of artistic merit. And I love the guy (and JT's gonna kill me for this), but the first one to start that trend was Too $hort (At least Eazy-E had the good sense to have Cube write his rhymes for him).
As a matter of fact, I'm pretty sure that Master P and his successors were heavily influenced by Bay Area artists and their "game" rap.
People got shit mixed up. Guys like Jay or Cormega may have been hustlers before they turned to music, but they didn't make good music because they had sold drugs, they made good music because they had talent (Jay-Z's early shit was seriously bad, though: Check out his early guest raps on Jaz's or Big L's albums). Hell, even Shyne could flow. Just because you're ghetto, doesn't ipso facto mean you can rap. That little fact got forgotten in there somewhere.
Hammer never got mistaken for "real" rap music. Young Jeezy did. There's a difference there.
Oh, and by the way, you can pretty much tell that they're all a bunch of morons by looking at the amazing originality of their aliases. I mean, just how many rap names starting with "Lil" or "Young" are these Southern jackasses gonna come up with? Your rap name is the first indicator of your creativity - Shallah Raekwon the Chef aka Lex Diamonds is one thing. Young Imbecile #251 is quite another.

I'm going to go with southern rap. Rap was on it's way down ten years ago , but they took it to a whole new level (of shittyness). Look at those Ms. Peachez videos on youtube. The fact that I can't tell if they are real or a joke speaks wonders.

I can see your point on Too Short, but I still think he didn't have the influence like Master P. Master P pumped his stuff all over BET,MTV,and misc Satellite video stations. He had that gold tank everywhere. Not everyone could get their hands on Too Short. Master P made damn sure everyone could get their hands on No Limit.

You're absolutely right; but that's basically what I said. Master P took a rap ethos pioneered by Too $hort and other Bay Area rappers (from boomin' beats and hustler lyrical content to selling tapes out of your trunk-style entrepeneurship) and took it mainstream. Hell, they even jacked those gaudy CD cover styles from guys like E-40, Dru Down and 4-Tay.
The difference is, guys like Mac Mall and JT tha Bigga Figga could rap. Silkk the Shocker, not so much.

I really don't see how Kanye is responsible at all. (for those 12 or so that voted for him)
He was/is a (good) producer for a good while before he started rapping and aside from dumbassery off stage I really don't see why you all see him as a negative in hip hop music in comparison to someone as ridiculous as lil' wayne.
