So do you use them?
After 5 years of gas bills of $125+ in the winter (i have central heating, water heater, and stove all on gas) and $110 for electric because of the huge fan in the central heater I decided to try and use space heaters around the house. I have to admit I am somewhat impressed with these ceramic space heaters...they have cut my heating costs by 40%.

i wouldn't if i didn't have to. the place we live in currently has the baseboard heating. i'm a poor student. then again, most the time, if i need to get warm, i put on a sweatshirt or throw a blanket over myself.

this has been a shitty winter in terms of cold and cloudy days. that heat wave we had a few weeks back was FUCKING BULLSHIT.

I have electric heat. It's awesome.
Enough heat radiates from my balls to heat a 2,000 square foot home.

Dude, the fan in the furnace could run all day and barely cost you anything, you are talking 4 amps worth of draw, unless you have a huge house, and its something like a 3/4 horse motor but I doubt that. Thats less than half a kilowatt per hour. I dont know your rates, but thats like 3.5 cents per hour operating. Now what you ought to do is get a heatpump, because those electric heaters are going to run up your electric bill significantly. You're talking 1800 watts per one usually, (at 7 cents per kilowatt hour) thats around 13 or so cents per hour. Get a heatpump, if you live in CA, its stupid not to. In ideal design conditions you are talking a 4-1 coefficient of production. That means with the same electric you are using in your space heaters, you could get 4 times the heat, with the same money. And you get A/C as well. And forced air is far more efficient, because it is set up in a way that bathes the outside walls with hot air to prevent loss of temperature, you would need a space heater for each register to do the equivalent.

growing up, we heated our house exclusively with a wood stove. you're cold? put on a fucking sweater, use another blanket, look up the origin of 3 dog night.
toward late summer a logging truck would come by and dump a bunch of logs in our driveway and my brothers and I would have to go at them with chainsaws, hyrdaulic splitters, splitting mauls, and the like.
shit, at this point, I usually sleep with the window open in the middle winter just so it's cold enough for a good rest.

I have a very efficient room independent central heating system, but I use it sparingly and just put on a jumper or an extra blanket at bedtime.
Maybe if your wife cuddled you every now and then you'd be warmer at night. Hell, if you even slept in the same bed it'd be a start....

I fuck to keep warm.
How bouts it?
I wear long sleeves and big boy pants. My grandmother took the space heater to her grave.
Sounds hot!
No... have your grandmother call me! She's the hot one!

We had hail late last night (early morning) near me. Keep that nonsense in the mountains.
Hell, Claydon your electrical bill seems a bit high. As for heat/gas - what do you keep your thermostat set at?

68 during the day, and off at night. We have one of those homes with those shitty fucking vaulted ceilings and all the heat just goes up into the ceiling. So now we just use the central heater to take the chill off (it was 59 in here this morning) and then use the space heaters.

During the day, if you aren't there and in the case the house does dip below 68 who are you heating? Seems silly to heat an empty house. Get home, turn up the heat [make it comfortable]...then keep it at about 66. You should be fine. Or go to Target and buy warmer blankets and pajamas.
Now if you were leasing from me and I found out you had one of those fire hazards, you'd be kicked out for a lease-violation.

These infrared heaters are expensive, but BY GOD do they work. We had one in a boat shop I used to work in, a big cavernous room with poor insulation. And one of these little suckers heated up everything in the room. It actually makes items in the room heat up. Of course, I could never afford one of them myself, but theres this company out west somewhere that makes em out of mahogany...beautiful and functional

Just make sure you're nowhere near a Sidewinder testing area with one of those bad boys.
