View Full Version : Do you use checks?

When I was growing up, I had no idea what an ATM was. I lived in a small town with no stop lights, at the grocery store, movie rentals, pharmacy, etc, my parents wrote checks.
I've had a debit card pretty much since the day I got to college, about 8 months ago I ran out of checks and haven't gotten new ones since. I can pay just about every bill I have online, almost everywhere I buy something accepts my debit card, really the only check I would write if I had them is for rent, but I just do an online transfer and my roommate pays it (the one time I paid it I went to the bank and got a cashier's check).
so, do you still write checks? (outgoing)

I use one check a month to pay my rent. That's it. Everything else is mainly credit/debit card, with a little cash thrown in.

I've had the same checkbook in my car since last April. My phone and internet bills are the only bills I can't pay online. Occasionally, I'll write one to my sons school for something. Thats about it. I hate being behind someone in a checkout line that uses them.
My boss is so old fashioned that I have to do all the AP stuff at work by hand writing checks, and I despise it. He refuses to modernize.

I only write checks when I'm in the 10 Items or Less line at the grocery store.

I write checks so that one of those environmentalist chicks try to change my ways, which leads to debating and finally me changing to e-payments to win her affection. After I am tired of sleeping with her I then go back to paying by checks and the cycle begins anew.

I haven't written a check in years. My wife does on occasion. I think my dislike of them stems from when I did collections on returned, altered and forged checks.
Prolly a few a month...most of which are electronically entered and handed right back to me

Do you guys not have direct debit to pay your bills and shit? I have probably used about 5 cheques in the last four years.

I do. Like I said, I pay every single bill online or with direct debit except for rent. School Loans, Cell Phone, Cable/Internet, Gas/Electic, etc. i pay online.

Yeah, I don't need to pay anything each month as I'm too forgetful; I just inspect the damage on the last day of the month.

Luckily, I have my bills set up that I pay the rent with my last paycheck of the month, and then I pay all my bills with the first paycheck of the month. Makes it simple as shit. I've never forgot to pay a bill.

some things you are just better off using a paper check for. but I use my debit card 90% of the time and use billpay for a lot of my electronic bills (water, cable, gas/electric) just because you can pay at the last second before due and not deal with late fees from mail holidays etc.

I pay online, they keep a record, and I also keep my own file for each company with each of my payments on record for my own backup.
It is no longer 1987, checks are a dying breed.
I don't. Have a box of em but haven't touched them. My mother used to use them all the time, but now has largely been converted to credit cards.
I have never in my life had a chequebook

I get a copy of every check I send out. Also, if there is a problem, I can stop the check. Plus I use the memo section for "Medical" and "Balance" notations. It helps my accouting.

I was denied a chequing account until I turn 18. That sucks but even more so, I also have a spending limit of $200 withdrawl on my savings account inspite of my massive savings I have accumulated over the past two and half years from working.

You're from Canada right? You can change your withdrawal limit anytime. Even without a credit check or whatever. It's the holds-on-funds policy that might need a good rating.

Apparently I cannot. It's an issue I bring up when I take on a teller if I'm not at that ATM. Anyway it does put a limit on the temptation to spend all my hard earned money..

I sort of do something like this.
The vast majority of my bills (95%) I pay online, and it all gets dumped into quicken with the appropriate confirmation numbers etc.
However, the city I live in only accepts checks for water/sewage/trash, I pay my rent with a check, and I pay ALL medical bills with a check. Why medical bills? I have had issues with paying via debit/visa/master card, ie the billing company cannot find the payment regardless of the confirmation number. With a canceled check you have hard evidence in your file folder.

One of my credit cards doesn't have an online payment option so I still have to write checks... twice a year. I'm never gunna finish using this book. I've got about a hundred more til they get all used up.
I still have 3 of the 4 they gave me when I opened my account.

My fucking utilities company charges 2.5% to pay online. Even though it SAVES them money if you sign up for paperless. I don't understand. Speaking of that, I have to go drop off the fucking check today.
