It's time to decide this once and for all. Ridley Scott's dark and atmospheric space horror, or Cameron's non-stop, kick-arse action?

First to vote! Yay me.
The original. This is a question?

This was a hard one, but I'll take Aliens based on because it has more of an action movie element it's easier to re-watch over and over.

This is one of the few times where the sequel is superior to the original. Just like Blues Brothers 2000!

I should have picked a username that wasn't so easy to destroy.
Can I have trident back?

I think some of my like for Alien is down to the fact that Scott is a local boy, but also the fact it creates a realistic environment; you can actually place yourself there rather than the more fantasied Aliens. Life isn't all about one thing after another at great pace, that's how the suspense build-up is excellent in Alien.

^good point but there can be such thing as too much buildup, see: space odyssey 1 and 2

Aliens.
I can watch Aliens a million times and enjoy it every time. I watch Alien more the once and I need a nap. I still love it but I have the attention span of a 4 year old.

Bill Paxton ruined Aliens!
Someone had to say it.

Bill Paxton makes Aliens watchable. Paul Reiser was also pretty damn good. Newt ruined the fuck out of the movie, and her performance alone puts the second film below the first one. I don't need catastrophically horrible sap in my action films.

I dunno, I can acknowledge the quality and classic status of the original, but I simply prefer the sequel.

Whilst both films are awesome 'Aliens' stands out to me as being the best.

Ok, let me say I FUCKING LOVE ALIENS....IT IS ONE OFTHE GREATEST SCI-FI FLICKS OF THE 1980S.
With that said, I simply have to vote alien because it was so ground breaking and visually stunning when it came out in the late 70s.

Alien was a much much scarier flick. There wasn't tons of action and special effects but there was plenty of suspense and terror. The only drawback was that there were long stretches of the movie that went pretty slow and people with short attention spans probably nodded off before the movie got going.
Aliens was much more action oriented with less emphasis on mood and horror, although it had a few moments. A very fun movie to watch and I enjoyed it a lot.
These two movies are almost different genres to me. Alien was a true horror pic while Aliens was an action flick. Both were great in their own genre. I gave the nod to Aliens just because it had rewatchability, I only needed to see Alien once.

Its the lack of a soundtrack that makes alien suck. It will seriously put you to sleep. "In space, noone can hear you scream, because you are asleep from all the white noise"
wow I am really torn on this one

I am as well. Yaphet Kotto is always golden. The first one is probably a better "film" but the deuce is the more enjoyable "movie."

Aliens for sure. I love that Cameron expanded on the details of the aliens themselves by creating the caste system. Game over man, game over.

Aliens...Alien was the build up and Aliens was the finisher.

Alien and Aliens are classics. I can almost recite the entire Alien dialogue verrbatim.
I kind of like the way the Alien series after the first two have gone canon all over the place, because its had different directors attached to each of them, staying in the general framework which is about an average person fighting a near futile fight against these aliens and it ends perfectly with the sacrifice of this person to end it.
Ripley is the main reason why I like I-III, but Hicks and Newt didn't need to be killed off but I like the concept of claustorphobic atmosphere, no weapons and the wtf are we gonna do now and what's wrong with more face huggers and acid blood ftw.
um,
go Ripley

I probably would have loved them in a movie theater atmosphere, but 20 years of aging and watching it in my own home turned them into a snooze fest.

Killing Hicks at the beginning of 3 was bad. But finding out that Newt was dead was my favorite part of that entire film.
