So far picard is first, followed by Adama, the Kirk. Im wondering are the judgements based more on who people like more or who actually seems like a captain you could live under. (Yes, I know my pic seems to be more based on 'like better'...but I was fairly drunk when I made this thread).


I would feel safest under Picards command. I would feel least safe under Kirks (though I would probably have more fun). I would worry about being left behind or tortured under Adama.

as a human being, virtuous, sure. diplomatic, oh yes. but... i have yet to see him do something great while in combat. yes, he could usually OUTthink the opponent and thus avoid conflict all together. which is great. best way of winning one is to avoid one in the first place.

but, other than that two-ships-in-one-place maneuver, he doesn't seem to have combat chops. he certainly KNOWS them, from studying other battles, all they way to nelson etc, but combat is different.

this is where adama has the edge. can, if necessary, negotiate and/or play the political standoff game as well as picard, but when it comes to combat, he's knee-deep in that stuff daily. and winning. actual experience, imo, is worth more than picard's studies of battles and then subsequent application.

so, my judgment is certainly not on whom i like more, but rather, under whose command would i live the longest.

You'd survive the longest sure, but live? Adama is military. From bones to blood vessels, that's what he is. He knows what to do in hard situations, and because of the military support, he has the ability to take and utilize that control to get what's needed to be done, done. He thrives there. Picard knows what to do to diffuse the hard situations before they ever begin. He knows how to keep it spinning so you can enjoy life, not just the absence of death. Adama's a chess player. Picard is a leader.

and on the other hand, you have a man who is hounded. hunted like an animal, all over the sky. no place to go, nowhere to hide. he WISHES he had picard's circumstances, instead, it is solely up to him to not only survive, but to keep what's left of the human civilization from becoming extinct. if that's not operating under pressure, and succeeding, i don't know what is.
