View Full Version : I've got a question about pigs...

Okay, I'm writing some trivia quizzes (it's something I do) and I got to thinking about the whole Islamic/Jewish non-chowing down on pork thing.
Firstly, I guess it's a potential starting point for peace talks between Jews and Muslims. They always say common ground is a great place to begin.
Anyway...if the Jews think it is wrong and the Muslims think it is wrong, and presumably it is written in the Bible somewhere, what's happened to the rest of us and eating a bit of pork?
I'm happy for the answer to why these guys aren't eating pork to simply be "cos it says so in the Bible" or "cos it says so in the Qur’an", but then they try to explain it by saying a pig is filthy, eats shit and wife swaps.
So what is it?
I eat pork, but you know what, if it genuinely was as dirty and filthy as these guys say, I wouldn't...but is isn't, so I do!
I think you get the idea...
The Old Testament says it was a sin...but in the new testament, in corinthians, it says that anything you eat with thanksgiving will not harm you...what goes into the mouth doesn't defouleth a man, its what comes out of the mouth.
I'm paraphrasing.

I'm going to use the word "defouleth" when I see my wife this evening.
I figured there'd be an Old/New Testament issue there somewhere...which leads me on to the pigs actually being clean bit....

Pigs are clean but the meat is filthy compared to other domesticated animals, that's probably where the whole "not-eating pork" thing comes from. It ain't good for ya, I think there's only a small part of the pig that's genuinely nutritious, and it tastes terrible. Christianity essentially deleted that part because, to a large extent, it's trying to be about moral code, not ethical.

Well, I don't mind the taste of pork and I have to admit to eating a lot of reasonably non-nutritious food...so not sure where that's relevant.
That's my, "the bible ain't a menu" response ;)

I think you misunderstood, the healthy part of the pig tastes bad, I think it's about equivalent to flank steak from cows, but a little better for you. The rest of the edible meat might taste good, but it's really bad for you. A lot of the ethical codes about eating in the Old Testament were added because just surviving was a big goal of the time. You didn't last long as is, and not eating right really cut down on how far you were gonna get. Ties into "be fruitful and multiply til you overtake the enemies in sheer number."

Actually, the Kur'an says ''do not eat filthy, unpure animals (food)'' or something like that. The point is, it doesen't say ''pigs'' specifically. I guess the muslims chose the pig to be their 'filthy' animal afterwards.

Islam is still loosely bound by the Old Testament, so they probably took it from there.

Animals that may not be eaten
Of the "beasts of the earth" (which basically refers to land mammals with the exception of swarming rodents), you may eat any animal that has cloven hooves and chews its cud. Lev. 11:3; Deut. 14:6. Any land mammal that does not have both of these qualities is forbidden. The Torah specifies that the camel, the rock badger, the hare and the pig are not kosher because each lacks one of these two qualifications. Sheep, cattle, goats, deer and bison are kosher.
Of the things that are in the waters, you may eat anything that has fins and scales. Lev. 11:9; Deut. 14:9. Thus, shellfish such as lobsters, oysters, shrimp, clams and crabs are all forbidden. Fish like tuna, carp, salmon and herring are all permitted. Link (http://www.jewfaq.org/kashrut.htm)

They come from hot-ass countries. Shit spoils quickly there. Pigs eat literally everything, so them being fed rotten garbage would lead to the people eating (especially under-cooked) pork getting trichinosis from the worms.
So to stop their people from dying, the Jews declared that God had decreed the pig to be a filthy animal. Most of their laws can be traced back to the fact that they were always severely outnumbered. The Muslims ran with it later.

Ever time some mentions something the Old Testment, some whips out the New one, so does that mean the Old one no longer matters? hate me please.

Essentially, yeah, that's why it's called the Old Testament. It's there for context.

Oh, then but if the Old is pwned by the New, why do we keep using it! No wait, thats because its where the interesting **** happens...nevermind

We keep using it because it's there for context. It's important to know where the ideas rolled from. Pay attention.

In the modern era, this might not fly too well, and, from the Orthodox-leaning Jewish perspective, its just a prohibitive Mitzvot that must be followed, and not challenged. Still, from my own personal perspective, the later-day understanding that pigs are thinking creatures has always been a good motivator for me not to eat them (I used to, but now its my one concession to kosher). I file it under the "they see it coming" personal dietary self-imposed prohibition. Plus, the whole "they aren't too far off from us genetically" and the notorious similarities in taste (although I have heard chicken too) is a good motivator. I will tell you this: it's a bitch to deal with every time I order breakfast or a burger somewhere.

The parts and workings of a pig are so similar to ours that researchers call pigs the horizontal man.
