Let the Right One In is a 2008 Swedish Romantic Horror film directed by Tomas Alfredson It is based on the novel of the same name (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Let_the_Right_One_In) by John Ajvide Lindqvist (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Ajvide_Lindqvist), who also wrote the screenplay for the film. It tells the story of a bullied 12-year-old boy who develops a friendship with a vampire (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vampire) in Blackeberg (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackeberg), a suburb to Stockholm (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stockholm). DVD came out yesterday. I thought this movie was absolutely great. Anyone else see it when it was in limited release? Currently at 97% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Easily top 5 of the year for me. An absolute crime that it was shut out at the Oscars. At the very least, Best Adapted.

Excellent film. I had never heard of it until i stumbled across it looking for swedish films of another kind. Nothing better than finding little gems like this.
Pool scene might have been the coolest thing I've seen in a while.

It's hard to get that from the film unless you've read the book. Or if you looked at Wikipedia. lolz

This film was brilliant. I think I mentioned this elsewhere, but I went to New York to catch a viewing of it, and really was shocked because I had no idea what to expect. Bought it on Blu Ray this past Tuesday. Absolutely beautiful and I can't recommend watching it enough.

This comparison (http://www.avclub.com/articles/let-the-right-one-in,25503/) at the Onion AV club between the film and the book it's based on, makes clear points that are explicit in the book and are either implied or ambiguous in the movie.
Short answer to your question:
Yes.
So I shouldn't have masturbated to his/her stitchy privates?

So apparently the DVD release changed the subtitles (http://iconsoffright.com/news/2009/03/let_the_wrong_subtitles_in_to.html)

Looking through the changes, I don't think we missed anything significant on the DVD release. Minus the opening dialogue between Eli and Oskar regarding where she lives, all of the other changes appear to be fairly superficial.

I respectfully disagree. I'm not a pendant, I don't insist that there is necessarily a single one right translation of anything, but I think all the translations they provide there are inferior in what's conveyed then what's in the subs I saw on the screener I downloaded. Though the same information is passed on, a lot of character and detail is lost.
Example #1:
http://i41.tinypic.com/352hds5.jpg
http://i41.tinypic.com/359l9jo.jpg
The original line is very funny; yes, she is twelve, more or less, but actually much much more. She's saying what she thinks is a lie, but there is a kernel of truth to it, since she is frozen at the age of twelve. She also doesn't have the certainty of age that a child has, who will count their age in months and days, but of someone old, in this case, very very old. The second, on the other hand, conveys the same information as the first line ("I am approximately twelve") while lacking all the detail except the last, the uncertainty an old person has about their age, and at the same time being completely wrong. She is not "about twelve" at all, in the sense of being near the age of twelve. Saying "more or less" has a different implication; it does not just mean approximately, but that the preceding statement ("I am twelve") is somewhat true and somewhat not true at all.
Here is a second moment with a minor character.

The first, makes clear that the character is outgoing, aggressive, and like high school boys everywhere, a horndog. He and the boy in the locker room are good friends, because only a friend would taunt another like this. The line serves as a contrast with Oskar's world and makes clear why he doesn't fit in. Oskar is a shy, mild, and withdrawn. It's not just that Oskar has a problem with the boys in his grade. This moment reminds us that he'd have a problem fitting in with high school culture anywhere. Finally, the reference to the physical act of sex as an almost uncontrollable urge emphasizes the contrast between these boys, as well as boys in general, and Oskar's chaste relationship with Eli, where sex isn't necessary.

I downloaded this yesterday. Probably watch it this weekend. Looking at those translations, they look horrible. Like someone who was unfamiliar with the language tried to translate it after taking a couple Swedish language classes.

The DOWN release does have the good subtitles. I watched this last night. It's a slow film, but it's still good. The only way to watch this is in HD. The movie is one gorgeous widescreen shot after another.
