Smashing Pumpkins sheds Chamberlin

NEW YORK (Billboard) - Billy Corgan announced Friday (March 20) that he is heading into the studio to record a new Smashing Pumpkins album without any of his original bandmates.

Jimmy Chamberlin, the group's original drummer and the only original Pumpkin to play with the band on its recent 20th anniversary "reunion" tour, "has left the group" according to a terse statement released on the band's website (http://www.smashingpumpkins.com).

The statement said, "The SMASHING PUMPKINS' guitarist, singer, songwriter and founding member Billy Corgan has announced that drummer Jimmy Chamberlin has left the group. Chamberlin joined the band Corgan founded in Chicago in 1988 and played on all their albums except Adore (1998). Corgan will continue to write and record as SMASHING PUMPKINS with plans to head into the studio this spring."

The band showed signs of tension at its most recent shows, with Corgan brutally berating the audience and individual fans from the stage. "Yes, the circus is back on the road," Corgan told a crowd in New York in November. "Just when you thought drama was so '90s."

Could not agree more! I remember when they use to be great... back when I was in highschool... or those were the good old days! Oh crap, did I just date myself?

Yeah those were the days. Back when it was Corgan Vs. Reznor... Who was going to save music now that Cobain was dead... blah.. blah.. blah.

I've often said Corgan's biggest problem is he became too much like Reznor but handled it all the wrong way. The Pumpkins had pretty much stopped being a "band" around the time that Siamese Dream came out, but he always went up and down about how it wasn't all him, and the band was important, and people believed him. THEN all these guys actually leave the band, and people freak because they think it won't be the same without the band members. Reznor always made it clear that HE was Nine Inch Nails, and Corgan should have done the same.

Fast forward to now, where it's finally well known that he did almost all the albums himself, and was notorious for shit like letting Iha spend a day recording, only to scrap it all, and re-record it himself after he left. He did need Chamberlain though, and without him he's fucked. $5.00 says the next album will feature a drum machine ala Machina because he's a stubborn, worthless fuck.

Billy Corgan has one of the most god awful voices in the history of music.

I can't say this surprises me. Once Billy said they were done making full albums, what's the point? I was amazed Chamberlain came back in the first place, and while I liked "Zeitgeist", it's not the same.

I loved this band, like worship loved them from about 1993-1998. The first 3 actual albums were great forms of alternative rock. But after that it was all meh. I was glad I got to see the band before 1999 a few times. I wouldn't have paid $20 to go to a "reunion tour" show, though. Especially when it's just Billy stroking his own ego by playing covers, deep cuts, b-sides and maybe 4-6 singles for $50+.

I'll keep living in the past.

I didn't really follow the pumpkins in the 90s...I was taken with STP. I do love listening to their 90s material now...but could care less if they have anymore records.
