What is the easiest way to end a medium/long term go nowhere relationship?

I ask this not (totally) because I am in the early-pre-consideration-stage of ending a 2+ year relationship thats going nowhere, but its a really interesting philosophical concept. Ending a longer relationship without a 'strong quick' reason for doing so. Is it ever good to do something you know will hurt someone else, but will be better for you in the long term? Even if you think itll be better for her (or him depending on whos responding) in the long run, you cant be sure. Plus, it may feel like you have wasted your significant others time by dating for so long.

i think it really depends on what type of relationship you want with the gal and the people she knows after you break up. if you don't care about what her or her associates will say, then there are plenty of really really easy ways to break up with her that will make her never want to speak to you again. if you DO kind of care about her or what will be said about you, then you can just say "i don't see us going anywhere with what we have, and i think that both of us deserve more than that" stuff. just throw in some sissy stuff about how you don't feel loved, and you don't love her like she should be, and blah blah blah. basically crap you can hear off of any emo album. you could probably also pick up some good material from any of the twilight books, but i haven't read them so i can't say for sure.

You're already asking a contradicting question. The relationship is heading nowhere. You're not happy. You want to end it. And yet you're asking about how the other person would feel?

I say, yes. It's okay to hurt the person. It would be less hurtful than to drag the relationship out longer when it's already clear that it has run its course.

Alot of times, people lose themselves in relationships and find themselves becoming selfless and unhappy for the sake of the other person. Which is why when you come to the point where it's going nowhere, you lose the ability to do something for yourself.
