Exciting news for gamers - Microsoft (http://www.pocket-lint.com/news/news.phtml/23244/24268/next-gen-xbox-confirmed-blizzard-developer.phtml#) is deep in the development process for the successor to the Xbox 360 games console, it's been revealed.

One of the first credible reports on the topic, Blizzard's Rob Pardo has confirmed that his company has taken part in talks with Microsoft about the next-next-gen console.

That Microsoft will launch another console at sometime in the future isn't exactly rocket science, but this news suggests the company plans to replace its current 4-year-old system soon.

Speaking at a lunch at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, Pardo did not provide hardware details - only that Blizzard is "actively in discussions with Microsoft" about the new gaming hardware.

Blizzard is the publisher behind the World of Warcraft games, and Pardo reported that he suggested to Microsoft that the next model should have improved input devices that would allow real-time strategy games (and the like) to be better ported to consoles.

I fucking hope they take as long as possible to release this. The life spans of systems is too short. With some exception (the ps2, the NES, the Gameboy, the Genesis and SNES), its getting so every fucking 4 years you have to update your system.

MS is going to fuck around and make the same costly mistake Sony did with the PS3 (and Sega did with the Saturn). Releasing something on name alone with a big price tag just to score a few bucks will lose your company more money than it will gain. Can MS even afford this kind of big scale gamble with the gamble they lost on Vista, and are running with W7?

I say let the 360 ride at least another 2 years before even talking about another system. People are still buying more ps2's than ps3's for goodness sake. Thats a market lesson in itself.

At the stage that it's sounding as though they're at right now I wouldn't expect a new unit to ship until 2011 or more likely 2012. By that time the market will be ready for something new.

If they're not ready with at least an idea of where they're going it'll be all over.

But its replacement fucking failed, retard. No one bought the fucking Nintendo 64 after its first xmas release...because it fucking blew. The playstation took its market. Hence "why you should not release new systems before the the life expectancy of the previous goes out or dry's up".

But your bottom fucking dollar Nintendo learned this lesson, as did Sega with the Saturn AND the Dreamcast (which otherwise was a decent system).

32 million units sold worldwide, oh yeah I'd call that a pretty huge failure. True the PS1 was more successful, but it crushed the hell out of the saturn and every other console of its generation.

Thats how you run a business, and thats how a profit is made in console gaming.

Could you NOT bring Race or racist slurs into every one of your fucking posts? Youre logic FAILs and human comprehension. I assume youre a mongoloid Caucasian dwarf in real life, with your short easily refutable yet constant semi-statements on shit you have no understanding of.

Thats after 15 fucking years, genuis. It was outsold by PS every year since PS's release (counting years individually, not cumulatively). N64 beat the saturn, but not by leaps and bounds, and if memory serves it did not outsell even the dreamcast during its North America release year. It was a failure. The last real games for it stopped being made in 2000, while the PS, which was released before the N64, was releasing games almost 3 years after that.

By your logic, the Neo Geo, or TG16 was a equal hit to the sega genesis.

Xbox will release a next gen system, with the reasoning being that they can then announce a break date on repairs on the 360. They were losing money on the 360 even before half of them were failing and being sent in to be refurbished. This time, their main focus should be on making sure that the system doesn't die. Anything above that should be considered a success.

That would be a good way to address the basic design flaws that caused all the RROD in the first place.

If they don't make this shit backward compatible like with the PS3, I'm going to kick the first baby I see.

First thing youve said that I agree with in a while. And I dont think the PS3's new models are backward compatible anymore.

I dont even know why an xbox would not be backward compatible with previous versions. Its just a little PC with a custom graphics card.

yeah I said that, the playstation beat it, that thing was a fucking beast, selling over 100million units worldwide, a number that only the PS2 has ever topped so far, but the N64 sold over 30million units, compared to the saturn at #3 with barely 9million. I'd call that leaps and bounds.

PS the last games were released in 2002, well after the release of the gamecube

Whats the odds that Halo 4 will be one of the launch titles for the new console? I can see the strapline now: START A NEW FIGHT WITH THE NEW X-BOX

That would be shitty. MS has been leaning on Halo pretty hard for a while now. The differences between 3 and 2 (other than graphically) were too small to account for, and the story/gameplay in each didnt compare to the original.

I really cant imagine what a new xbox would have that I would pay more money for at this point. Graphics arent everything. If they were I would have bought a PS3.

Agreed. But it's a fantastic cash cow.

Thats why I suspect Halo 4 as a launch title. Most 360 fans are so hopelessly addicted to Halo that if you offered Halo 4 as a launch title gamers would be more likely to part with their money.

Either way I hope MS takes their time with this. The 360 has another 2 years in it I think.

Apparently this is on it's way to consoles within the next few months. Innovations like this (however ones that can't run on current consoles) would be a huge motivator to move to a new system. I'm not sure how old this video is now, but in the video they show the final product and state that it's directed first at the video game market, and that it's to come out in a few months. I'm a bit excited to see how it really works.
