Who is the best (4 wheels only)?

Add pilots if you think they deserve it.

of all time or currently?

all-time greatest
without a doubt: graham hill. mr. monaco is the only driver in history to have won the triple crown of motorsport (in which one driver wins the 24 hours of le mans, indianapolis 500, and the f1 championship or the 24 hours of le mans, indianapolis 500, and the monaco grand prix).

runners up: juan manuel fangio ("the maestro"; 5x f1 world champion), michael schumacher (7x f1 world champion), ayrton senna (3x f1 world champion prior to death in '94)

currently active
it's a close one, but: canadian jacques villeneuve. he's currently the closest active driver capable of completing the triple crown of motorsport. all he has to do is win le mans this year. he won the indy 500 in '95 and was the f1 world champ in '97. he's currently the lead driver for peugot's primary le mans team. also on peugot's le mans team: currently active f1 driver sebastien bourdais.

runners up: fernando alonso (2x f1 world champion), juan pablo montoya (won both the monaco gp and indy 500), and tom kristensen (8x le mans winner)

No love for Sebastian Loeb or Marcus Gronholm?

edit: whoops somehow I missed Loeb on the poll options at first.

senna had pre-cog abilities.

Huh, Tyler, the question is "who is the best driver ever?" not "who is the best driver ever in fucking formula 1?"

And yes, all time.

Loeb will win every single rally this year. And probably become the best driver ever in the process. The guy almost has as many records as Schumi.

these are pretty much synonymous.

And yes, all time.

good, then my original best-of list stands.

Senna: There is no other. The mastery was seen in the rain. That was when all the cars were equal -- power was no advantage. He ruled the courses when it was wet. Yes, there were only three F1 championships before his death, but he also had to battle Alain Prost almost his entire career -- Schumacher rarely had anyone close to his level.

I strongly disagree with that statement.

He is pretty amazing to watch, unfortunately I don't get to see all the WRC events. The dude also must have absolutely no fear whatsoever.

I keep hoping an American will get into WRC, maybe Ken Block and Travis Pastrana will make the leap from ARC but who knows.
Check out the Ken Block videos I posted in the car section, they are pretty sweet.

I strongly disagree with that statement.

furthermore, both of my lists were very well-rounded in terms of names mentioned and the criteria by which they were nom'd. quite interesting that despite my list apparently sucking, all of the drivers in my "all-time" list seemed to have made your list, fuld. ;)

also, you spelled tom kristensen's name wrong in the poll options.

Never said that your list sucked, only that you have no love whatsoever for rally and rally-raid drivers.

this is where the word 'best' will actually muddle the issue. it would be more appropriate to ask for 'most well rounded'.

while i concur that rally takes a sack full of nuts and immense talent, i'm not all that familiar with it and f1 is the pinnacle to me, so i judge based on who is the best of the best. *shrug* both arguments are valid, it would seem, good sir.

Schumacher rarely had anyone close to his level.

mika hakkinen put a fuckin' hurtin' to schumi and his pride on more than one occasion. the only man that schumi ever feared on track... and a giant teddy bear off the track. if i had to choose a getaway driver, i'd chose the flying finn any day of the week.

See, if I had to choose for a getaway driver, I'll surely go for a rally driver. Way more usefull on this type of situation, unless you robbed a bank on an highway.

Besides, the real flying Finn is Mäkinen.
