View Full Version : Help me pick the next game I buy

My roommate got a 360 and we're trying to build up a library of games. On a college student's budget, however, dollars are precious and we need to be careful about what games we buy--we really don't want to be wasteful. The two games we've narrowed it down to are Dead Space and Mass Effect. The last game we bought was Assassin's Creed and we loved it. We don't want action games--we shied away from RE5 because we read so many reviews that said it played like an action game with monsters. To those who've played both, which would you recommend?

dead Space. It's pretty fucking awesome

GTA IV
The replay value is off the charts.
I don't give a care if that was one of your options.
And if you're on such a tight budget why did you buy Assassins Creed? Doesn't that game have like 10 hours of gameplay?
Jericho

Prolly cause AC only costs like 20-25 bucks now
Gamestop has Mass Effect for $19.99 and it comes with the download content.
http://www.gamestop.com/Catalog/ProductDetails.aspx?product_id=73790
They also have Dead Space for $49.99
http://www.gamestop.com/Catalog/ProductDetails.aspx?product_id=67176
So in all reality you could purchase both and pay only a little over what it would cost to purchase a new 360 game at full price.
But if you have to choose I would say Mass Effect especially if you are into RPG's you can sink tons of time into that game.
NOTKyle
04-06-2009, 11:47 PM
Still. For the same price you can get Halo 2, Perfect Dark, Dead Rising. For $40-50ish you can get Oblivion. Why actually purchase a game that is well known for how short it is?

I'm on a student's budget, and I have bought like 15 games for my PS3 in the last half year or so.
However, you can't go wrong with either. Dead Space is brilliantly made and massively atmospheric, while Mass Effect just may be the best written game of the past 10 years. I remember you saying you liked KOTOR: Then, Mass Effect will make you cream your pants.

Meh, if there's one complaint I have about MA, it's that it's a bit short. First play-through only lasted 30 hours or so with full exploration - if it's time you want, Fallout 3 is unbeatable. I put like 200 hours into that shit, and never even got to Canterbury Commons...

I'm not one for incredibly lengthy RPGs, though; I like them manageable, as 100 hours is usually my ceiling for games. What's the time on Mass Effect?

That really depends on what genres you like, but a games collection without Bioshock isn't worthy of that name.

Let's see, what games do I own that are also out on the 360 (I have them on the PS3 & PC, myself)...
Action/shooters - Graw 2, R6: Vegas, Splinter Cell: Double Agent, RE5, The Orange Box, Dead Space
Sandbox/RPG - Bioshock (I know, it's more of an FPS than an RPG, but still), GTA IV, Assassin's Creed, Mass Effect, Fallout 3
Platformers - Lego Star Wars (don't laugh, it's bloody fantastic)
Fighters - SC IV and SF IV.
I can recommend all of them...

I would recommend the fuck out of The Orange Box.
Ocelot
04-07-2009, 12:09 AM
If it's between those two I'd get Mass Effect. I haven't played Dead Space, but mass effect is like $20 now.
Others I'd suggest are Fallout 3($60) or oblivion($20 I think) (depending on what you get a rise out of more- futuristic apocalypse or medieval fantasy), Dead Rising($20), Left 4 Dead($60), Street Fighter IV($60), or Star Ocean: The Last Hope($60), just to name a few.
Saints Row 2 can also be a fun diversion.
Edit: More or less what Arch said. I would wait on The Orange Box though until they release the TF2 update for Xbox users. Hopefully it's coming in the next few months.. maybe..

Get your girl addicted to games, but make sure you have separate TVs. The missus plays the shit out of some RPGs, and I always have to kick her away from the TV when I want my turn at Street Fighter or some such.

Best value for money in a game, ever. They could have sold that shit for three times what it cost initially, and it would have been morally defensible.
But then, I am seriously gay for HL2, so my opinion is biased.

I'm seriously thinking about picking up Endwar and Armored Core: For Answer one of these days. They'e also selling Mirror's Edge and The Force Unleashed for like 13 quid now, so I might give those a shot.

Oh, she already is a gamer, just a different gamer. Her all-time favorite is Earthbound, which I actually started playing just because she likes it so much. She's not much into the medieval games, more into stuff that's either anime-like or what I would describe as "cutsie", like Animal Crossing. I did get her to try Morrowind, which she liked but has no idea what to do.

If your girl likes Anime type games and JRPGs (and you have a PS2 lying around), try getting her a game from the Persona series as a present - they're only $25 or so, but they get rave reviews from everywhere, and the missus is totally adicted to them.

Nah, no PS2. We're both pretty busy so it's hard to find games. She has her DS she plays a lot, and I've been trying to get her into the Elder Scrolls series. We'll see, I'm sure she's heard of the Persona series, she knows more about those kinds of games than I do.

Mass effect by a hair. Dead Space has its moments though. But it can be repetitive and it is nothing you haven't seen before.
If you like a story and getting attached to characters, Mass Effect is pretty awesome.

I think we need to know what games you already have so we can figure out the best choices for you and your friend. Currently I sit at 32 Full Games plus like 15 DL games and some expansion packs for games like Mass Effect, Fable II, GTA 4, Oblivion and such.
All depends on what you like. Oblivion is still my Number 1 game. I bought all the expansions and such over the weekend since they were half off. So really if you just connected to live you could get over 300 hours of game play and such for like $50 total ($20 for game and about $30 for all the expansions).
My Top 10 is
1. Oblivion w/ Shivering Isle and other expansions
2. Left 4 Dead
3. The Orange Box
4. Dead Rising
5. Saints Row 1 & 2
6. Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix
7. Resident Evil 5
8. Mass Effect w/ Expansion
9. GTA IV w/ The Lost & Damned Expansion
10. Halo 3
Honorable Mention: Viva Pinata 1 & 2
