GMF's Favourite Games - Idea Thread

So DrDeath and myself have been kicking around this idea for a couple of days now, and I think that now it's time to get more or less serious about this.

However, it's all still rather sketchy, so we'd like to ask you, the GMF gamers, for some feedback, namely regarding the structure of it all.

The most important question is the voting process. Once we come up with some nominees, do we do brackets or sinple polls? Single option or multiple choice? Do we first divide by genre or by system, and then let the best FPS compete against the best RPG, best fighting game or the best PS2 game against the best N64 game and the best 360 game etc, or do we just throw them all into one pot? Stuff like that.

Next, obviously, will be the categories. Favourite Game is a lock, of course, but what else? Favourite Series/Franchise, Favourite System, Favourite Genre, Favourite Old School game all make sense, as well, but doing too much may be counter-productive.

And actually, I was wrong. The most important question is: Do you care?

I don't like the idea of a bracket really, but it would be a more enjoyable way to actually narrow down the "favorite" in each category. Simple voting gets boring. (look at the arpys).

Obviously not multiple choice, because people are stupid and will just vote for everything.

Favorite game, favorite "old school game" (pre ps2/gamecube/xbox), favorite console, favorite fps, favorite rpg, favorite franchise/series, and favorite genre are all locks in my book. Past that we could go with favorite game by console, most underrated game, favorite non-series/franchise game, favorite controller, and others are possibilities if people see it working.

I think we would just open threads dedicated to every category. Every member would suggest 1/2/3/4 applicants that are applicable. The threads would stay open for maybe a week, then me and Arch would lock them and create polls with roughly 10 options that got the most votes.

That is unless we really want to do brackets, in which case the #1 highest vote getter would go up against the #8, the #2 against the #7, and so on.

Also, do we allow games from all eras, or do we make a separate poll for old school games?

And I'd say condense platformer with action/adventure, just because that list is massive. And maybe just cut out puzzle/skill? And we could just make FPS Shooters. Just a thought, I feel like we should try to keep this down to like 20-25 total categories.

Well I wrote up a whole bunch of stuff but my computer decided to act up and not allow me to post it.

To sum up I came up with 16 categories divided up between Old School (Pre PS2, XBOX and Gamecube) and New games.

Say for example that Chrono Trigger won Old School RPG. Oblivion won New RPG. They would then go Head to head for best RPG. The winner then would qualify for best game.

Everyone would get to pick like top 5 choices for each genre. Top 10 games going into the polls.

Stuff like that.

For "GMF's Fav Game" you could just have people nominate a huge number of things, like in the Fav Babe contest. Then, you put the top 25 vote getters into a poll, and take the top 16 vote getters into a NCAA tourney bracket with seedings based on votes, and then have polls for that till you have a #1.

Okay, I'll get to this in earnest over the week-end, and set up the first nomination threads.

I do like the separation by age thing for the categories, so nostalgia doesn't have too much of a bearing. However, I don't think that we'll need to separate a best series poll by genre - with 25 possible poll options, I think we're good just having one best series thread. But I'm open to suggestions, until tomorrow at least.
