I really love the NHL taking their sweet ass time to release the days of the actual games. I ended up buying tickets to the first Blues home game without knowing which day it's gonna be played, just so they wouldn't run out.
Hawks-Flames begin Thursday. I know that much.

SJ/ANA is going to be such an awesome series. I'm not glad we drew one of the top 2 teams in the West, but hell I'd rather face SJ given the travel and familiarity.
this series is easily going 6 games. it reminds me of that DET/EDM series awhile back in the 1st round.

Go Caps. I know nothing about hockey (compared to you guys) and I haven't followed playoff hockey since Jean Sebastian Giguere (sp?) had that great playoff run for the Mighty Ducks all those years ago, but I watched more regular season hockey this year than ever before (maybe like 20 games) and the Caps games are on locally, so it'll be cool to root for (and actually know a tiny bit about) a team in the playoffs.

Columbus, St. Louis and Anaheim all play the Sharks pretty tough. I was hoping to get Anaheim for those same reason as you, locality and familiarity. Its definitely gonna be at least six, but as long as the Sharks don't shit the bed they should be able to take it in six.

Ducks in 6! That's a homer pick all the way. Sharks have playoff tested players this time around. Won't be surprising to see them battle the Wings in the WCF's.
Atleast I can take advantage of the complete lack of hockey fans in SoCal and score some playoff tickets with relative ease. On game day. For less than face value.

This is the fourth time since 2001 they have met in the postseason.
The Hurricanes, and not the perennially powerful Devils, hold a 2-1 advantage in the series. New Jersey won the first matchup in 2001, but lost to the Hurricanes in both 2002 and 2006. The team holding home-ice advantage has won all three series, which bodes well for New Jersey, especially when you consider that the Devils have lost six consecutive playoff games at RBC Center, including three in overtime, and failed to win a road game in the past two playoff series between these teams (0-6).
Carolina can take solace in the fact that it defeated the Devils in the first three games of the 2008-09 season series before New Jersey took a cosmetic victory in the final game of the season
So glad we got the Hurricanes. So very, very glad.

I would be surprised if ANA goes out in 5 games. but you're right ... the Ducks take dumbass penalities and vs. a team like SJ (one of the best on the PP), you don't want to give them numerous PP opportunities. Giggy is going to have to step up his game because he's zoned out for most of this season.
and how is Ryan going to adjust to playing in the playoffs? if SJ does get by ANA, they'll be hobbling ... much to the delight of whoever SJ/ANA faces in the 2nd round.

While they the Rags deserved that one by goal tending alone, you cannot say that any team had enough penalties. The one call that didnt get call ended up being the difference in the final score.
I expect to see a much better game out of the Caps on Friday. I think it will be Caps in 6.

How can you say that one goal was the difference goal? That goal tied the game, not like it won it, I see your point, but I don't agree. Everyone fails to mention the elbow by Green, that than set up the goal for the Caps at the end of the period.

I didn't see the game, so I can't comment on the Green elbow. I am just going by what Sportsnet has shown.
All I meant by it made a difference wasn't that it was the GWG or anything like that, I just meant if it wasn't scored then it would have been a tie game rather then 4-3 at the end of 60. Who knows maybe the Caps would have scored on the PP. Either way it happened it is done and on to game 2.

I wonder who Washington will look for next season to solve their goaltending woes? My thoughts turn to Manny Fernandez in Boston, JS Giguere, Martin Geber (if they believe he was legit in his last few starts/if we don't sign him) or Vesa Toskala (if we keep Gerbs and want to trade him away).
Via the FA route, Clemmensen is probably going to get a huge payday.

will teams take Giggy's hefty contract? I would hate to part with Giggy with all the memories he has brought to the Ducks, but Hiller has looked veteran-like for being a damn rookie.
if we are to part with Giggy, I imagine Bob Murray is going to seek LW help after getting rid of Kunitz (and our top LW prospect) for Whitney at the deadline. the good thing is the cap hell Burke left behind will be done with all the expiring deals.

no way they get gerber, i'd be surprised if toronto keeps him or any NHL team takes him. Varlamov looks good, but i'm not sure if hes ready for 100% starter, i'd say fernandez would be the best bet.

A goalie's stats can usually be attributed to the team he plays for. If they play a solid, shut down defense then he can have great numbers because he isn't facing that many tough shots.
In the case of Hasek winning MVPs, it was because he played for teams that gave up a lot of high quality scoring opportunities night in and out and was flat out amazing.

Most goalies don't play a full season either except in one goalie markets like Calgary.
The goalie is a far more stationary position and as mentioned above, a goalies stats can be largely based on the team is plays for.
.92 sv% and 2 gaa aren't that spectacular if you're only seeing 10 shots a game (I know those stats don't fit side by side).
Titus_Pullo
04-22-2009, 12:32 AM
Can't you adjust for the defense?
Not if the team you face has fast skaters, hard hitters and are disciplined.
Also, Goalies don't play every game in the regular season. Usually you want to have a solid back up that can play 40-45% of the games. It is during the playoffs you go with your number one guy the whole stretch.
EDIT: Like he said.

Goalies play 70-75 games, position players play 75-82. A goalie is on the ice for 60 minutes. A position player is rarely on the ice for more than 20-25. A goalie has more ice time than any other player, period.

Ah, the old Tim debates of old.
In an ideal hockey game the puck is only in that goalies end for 30 minutes of the game. Depending on your team that number can fluctuate.
Whether it's standing still or sitting on a bench it's still not active time.

Well I didn't think of that because I'm stoned.
Still though, a goalie will spend maybe 25 minutes a game defending the net, while even a superstar forward only handles the puck maybe five, ten minutes a game and is involved in a play around 15 to 20 minutes (total guesstimates but you get the general idea). Is a player skating medium speed when he's not involved in a play in any way (direct or indirect) somehow more meaningfully active than a goalie when the puck isn't in his zone?
Hodge
04-22-2009, 12:52 AM
For this argument yes. For overall athleticism not.
I'd like to see Ovechkin do the splits.
In the playoffs most teams go with one goalie and that is usually the hot one... like the caps, the went with the rookie because he played MUCH better that Theodore... Hiller just plain out played Jiggy and now get to play... it's about winning in the playoffs...
Plus it's rare that a goalie that plays 70-75 games is really all that sharp as if he were in the middle of the season... that's why most goalies get a lighter load... it the play too much, when it comes to the playoffs they are not as sharp... the season is LONG and the playoff are super intense, the level of hockey is just that much better, it's a grind on all the goalies to play that much..
Well I didn't think of that because I'm stoned.

well if the team plays good defense there is some down time for the goalie to stand around so it can be not as intense and tiring..... and as for athletics skating your ass off for a 45 sec to 1 min shift will make most people's heart explode..

This is what a one goalie system gets you; a goalie who doesn't keep his game sharp in the summer and is overplayed for the playoffs.
I do find the Kipper/Bulin rematch interesting though. It looks like it will go the distance as well. Hopefully Canada can squeak one more team into the playoffs.

Home team is undefeated in this series, and the team to score first each game has lost every game. Hopefully this thing ends with the flames pwinning this weekend.

How about the Rangers, huge fucking win at home, Lundqvist played off his head, and sometimes you need that to win games.
They got lucky. Avery almost single handedly lost it for them again.

Yes he did, but we won so can people stop talking about his stupidity and maybe about how fucking good Lundquist played last night.
