There's like four Wal-Marts in close vicinity to where I live. Three of them are mostly crowded by Mexicans, the other one is mostly white people. You can guess which one I go to.

Yeah, I never got the point of degrading one's self for a 30 cent saving on a tin of beans.
We thankfully kicked out Wal-Mart out of Germany, and what discount supermarkets we have (I hear Aldi is doing business in the US now, too) are decent enough - however, the supermarket closest to my flat (80 feet v the 200 feet it'd take to the nearest discount place) is pretty upmarket, so laziness pulls me there more often than not.

No problem with Walmart. Oddly enough, their prepackaged and canned foodstuffs taste exactly like any other legitimate grocery store. Would I buy a sofa from Walmart? No. Would I buy a cheap plastic toy to give as crappy gift to a child for Christmas? Yes.

I try to find other places to save though, because Wal-Mart treats employees like shit, underpays them, and is ruthless against their vendors. They run mom-and-pop shops out of business in an almost predatory fashion. I think that sucks.

No man, it's a good thing to pass on savings to consumers, but that is not where it ends. In some cases, Wal-mart has been able to force vendors to allow Wal Mart to open and scour their books, and even require vendors to open permanently staffed offices in Bentonville. Wal Mart's tactics ultimately give us less variety, fewer competitors in categories, and only lead to vendors cutting corners in quality.
Locally owned supermarket groups in the area where I live do pay better than Wal Mart, but more importantly treat the employees better with more favorable rules. Your area could be different. I'm no expert, but my opinion is Wal Mart is the worst of the mass retailers in terms of doing business with them.

Why wouldn't you want to shop at Wal*Mart? They give out PSPs with porn.
Hey, parents: if you're buying a games console from Wal-Mart, do the right thing and check it out first yourself. That way, you'll avoid what happened to poor little Eliso Tovar.
See, Eliso was treated to a late, late Christmas present from his mum last week. She took him to a Wal-Mart in Manatee County, Florida, and bought him a PSP. All was well!
Until he took it home and turned it on. And found that the wallpaper was of a naked chick. And that the PSP somehow had a memory stick already inside it that was full of "hundreds of pornographic pictures".
Wal-Mart offered to give the kid a new PSP game. Eliso's mum, Tamatha, is having none of it, and wants a whole new PSP instead.

Again, they have the right to do this. They have no obligation to sell a particular product in their stores, period. Less variety? Can you think of a brand you have to travel elsewhere to get? Are you saying there would be brands right now, if wal-mart didnt do this? I dont believe that assertion.

Yes I can think of many brands I travel elsewhere to get, yes I think there would be more brands competing within certain categories without Wal Mart tactics.
More favorable rules at local suprmarkets in my area include better hours, vacation policies, work environment, discount, phone calls, and breaks. Not to mention no discrimination by race, gender, or for disabilities. Wal Mart's shitty treatment of employees has been covered by many credible sources.

I usually don't need to shop at Wal*Mart because I work in a grocery store. But I don't give a shit how they treat their employees, they're not honor-bound to their job. They could fucking leave or even try getting an education.
All I know is that I got The Good The Bad and The Ugly for 5 bucks at 2 in the morning. And I guess I don't get the whole "trashy" aspect of it, because everybody's trashy in some way. I'm sure there's some of the trashiest upper class folks you'll ever see at Men's Wearhouse, fitting their slovenly frames with suits for pictures to try and impress whatever internet dating website they plan on plastering their pathetic selves all over. Meanwhile at Wal-Mart there's a single mother of 2 children just trying to get by in the world. Sometimes people's views on what is trashy is backwards. If y'all really lived in a rural area, like me, you'd truly understand what a necesarry evil wal-mart is. I found myself wanting to leave a buggy of landscaping items I'd picked up at Lowes the other night because I realized that the same items were just dollars cheaper at wal-mart. I went ahead and made the purchase, because of the time invested and I'd drove 55 miles, but money talks and bullshit walks. When you have no options and the one that you do have is cheap, you tend to gravitate toward it.

I voted "OMG I LOVE WALMART" only because "I love Walmart so much I want to sex it and write songs about it and give all of my children 'Walton' as a middle name" was not an option.
I'm at my local Walmart every Saturday morning. I'm on a first-name basis with the manager. I buy every commodity item that we purchase there.
And I don't just buy stuff there because it's cheap and convenient. I drive a little farther to shop there out of principle. I admire the shit out of Walmart Stores, Inc. They are the best in the world at logistics, leveraging buying power and union busting. And because of their incredible competence, they really do help families stretch budgets.
Are there demonstrable downsides to Walmart? Yes. I will allow that they are rough on employees. And I don't appreciate that they let their judgments on culture interfere with their business. However, if you follow this stuff, you'll see that they are getting better.
Walmart's not perfect, but neither were Reagan, Ted Williams or 80's porn flicks. That won't stop me from loving them all.

I'm speaking of spending money, not making money, I believe that that makes me the John in the whore/customer scenario.

I DESPISE Walmart. They are a perfect example of the death of American made products. They beat their suppliers down on price to the point where the suppliers HAVE to use overseas manufacturers just to stay afloat. I read once that if Walmart were a nation, they'd be China's 7th largest trading partner.
Plus, it seems everyday there is another lawsuit filed against Walmart on behalf of their employees.
I know they have super low prices but I avoid it like the plague, just on principle.

I think it's stupid to not shop at walmart on principle. If they have what you want and they have it for cheap, go there and pick it up. You dont shop there because they're not nice? Newsflash: nobody's nice, fuck you pussy.
Edit: I didnt even read the post above mine until after I posted. William is a pussy.

Walmart isn't a beauty queen, but Costco proves a retailer can be competitive and have a fucking heart for their workers and customers. Walmart doesn't always have the cheapest stuff either.
Down with the blue Satan.

I wish we had CostCo. At least had some kind of variety. We're just lucky that they are finishing the second Super Target in the Tulsa-Metro area.
Yet...we have no less than 30 Wal-Mart Supercenters or Neighborhood Markets.
But those of you "swearing off" Wal-Mart are fucking retards.

Costco is another company I admire. However, people erroneously try to make an apples/apples comparison between the two. The Costco model is much less labor-intensive because of the bare-bones presentation and the bulk products. Costco uses less, but higher-skill labor. Hence, the better wages.

Convenience. Where else can you go to one store and leave with deodorant, a DVD, golf balls, shotgun shells, hunting and fishing licence, a pet fish for the kid, box of moon pies, diapers, beer, Christmas lights, birthday card, an iron man poster and then stop for gas on your way out the parking lot?

I won't deny that I do go to walmart occasionally. I don't avoid it because of the poor white trash stigma, but because it's crowded as fuck and I could see myself in a ghetto fight in an aisle because some dirty fat bitch ran her food stamp basket into mine and called me a bitch because I wouldn't move. I can only shop on the weekends and there's also like 500 mexican families crowding the aisles and it feels like the flea market.
There's a Target across the street that so much easier to shop in.
I am in the same boat with you. I actually don't mind the premise of walmart. I love the idea of inexpensive things. I mean little garden toys, seeds, plants, paper towels shouldn't be expensive. But at my local walmart.. every bitch with curlers and Marvin The Martian jammies comes out in full effect. I don't even know who told them wearing curlers and house shoes out was acceptable, because it's not. It also always smells like farts and Popeye's chicken.
So yeah I usually go across the town to Target and pay a little extra for my seeds and flip flops.
You can have my seed for free.

walmart rocks when your broke.
Only when they've got something no one else does. The latest AC/DC CD for example, cheap unedited CDs, cheap DVDs, cheap beer, cheap Coke, etc.

I needed a cheap pair of shorts and a cheap pair of sweatpants to wear to bed. I was able to get both at Wal Mart for under $10 total. That rocks because I'm wearing the shit to bed. Who gives a fat flying fuck where the fucking shit fucking came from? As for the rest of the fucking store, they have shit for cheap. I have two kids that make going to get a cheap pair of shorts and a cheap pair of sweatpants impossible without a trip through the toy aisle. Which instantly adds $20 to my trip. At least at Wal Mart I can get some decent fucking shit for $20.
Although unlike the Pathmark by my house, I can't get away with stealing shit so really that's kind of a negative.

I can get 90% of the things that aren't quality necessary i.e. motor oil, soap, underwear, etc etc at Walmart. It's close to where I live. It has everything under one roof. It is usually pretty damn easy on my wallet.
The things where I would be picky such as food, electronics, or clothes I would usually go to shops that are specific to those items.
On the whole I would say Walmart pretty much kicks ass, but I wouldn't say they were any better or worse than any other mass retailer like Meijer or whatever. I love all the buy everything you need under one roof stores.
the walmart near me just lost more than half its parking lot because of a massive condo construction project underway, I hated going there before and I hate going there now even more because there's nowhere to fucking park
