One category which gives me a headache is "adventure"; it's easy for older games (Gabriel Knight, Sam & Max, Blade Runner etc), but what exactly constitutes an "adventure" game today, and how are they different from "action" games? What category do games like Okami, GTA or Shadow of the Colossus fall under? Or do I just declare "action/adventure" to be a catch-all category?

It is my favorite system of all time. The VMU units were perfect for sports games, NFL 2k started a franchise that was so far beyond anything Madden threw at us, and if it weren't for EA's retarded practices we'd still have them.

I have a number of games for mine, however most of mine are "backups" at this time. A system that required absolutely nothing done to it to play backups. Wonderful.

Genres aren't really absolute. Lot of games cross over, I'd probably consider Tony Hawk more of a platform game with a skateboarding theme than a straight sports game. That said, a paintball mod, or a paintball game in itself as a sports game is just stupid. They're shooters. I consider WoW team based hack and slash.

Maybe it's just me.
WoW is as much an RPG as Oblivion, I'm not sure hack&/ is really much of it's own genre. Too many fall under one of the other categories.

Portal is a very, very good game. It challenges you in every aspect, but personally, I had more invested emotionally in Braid than I did in Portal. Now, that begs the question, do we break down the puzzle genre into more specific categories? Cause I think, with regards to Braid, ya kinda have too. I cant think of a 'Puzzle' game with that much beauty/depth (story really was great, at least, what I played. some 5hrs or so)

Also, "Adventure" would probably be era-free, as well, since it's mostly an old school genre, with very few notable titles since 2000 (Shenmue, Syberia and Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy come to mind), while "Action-Adventure" would be the big catch-all category, with possibly more than one nominee going to the "Favourite Game" meta-poll.

Survival Horror: classic Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Parasite Eve, Alone in the Dark, MAYBE Dino Crisis (although DC2 sort of presaged Capcom turning away from survival towards more action heavy titles)...

Stealth: MGS, Syphon Filter, Splinter Cell, Thief, Tenchu, and that's pretty much it.

Secret of Mana is an adventure RPG. So many RPGs that I put it in Adventure.

RPGs have XP and leveling up. Leveling up leads to better abilities.
