View Full Version : MLB: Who would you take first?

I thought about making this a poll, but since I'm not a fantasy guy and I don't pay attention to the National League until October, I'm sure I'd leave off some good candidates.
So, I'll just put the scenario out there:
You're a major league GM. Baseball shuffles the deck and puts every active player into a draft. You are lucky enough to draw the first pick in the first round. Your sole goal is to win the series this year... future be damned. Money is not a concern, but everything else (like health, for instance) is.
Who do you take first?
I probably take Johan Santana or Roy Halladay first, because I think you can piece together offense and defense, but studly starters are impossible to find. Then again, they only contribute every five games in the regular season, every three in the post.
So, dickbags, who ya got?
(Stax: I look forward to being educated regarding statistical composites that I did not know existed.)

This isn't starting off how I would have expected.
Yes, JJ, you can fuck them, but you're still trying to win the series.
Poppy-San, I'm talking about on your team.

albert pujols, ryan braun, dustin pedroia, or tim lincecum maybe?
Santana, Halladay, Pujols, Hanley, Wright would be most of my list. ARod and Manny are getting too old, so young position players and a couple dominant starters.

Good players, all, but you only get one pick. Do you pick a starter or a position player?

Nick Swisher. So I could stare into his eyes every day
I pick Albert Pujols, then. The best player, young and healthy. I don't take a starter, particularly a 30 year old starter, until after Hanley and Wright as well, IMO.

Nick Swisher isn't a player, he's a player/manager/GM/owner/commissioner/God.

Pujols is a devastating stick, but if you're going the position-player route, wouldn't you take a great offensive player at a premium defensive position, given the chance?

Positional value is accounted for by plenty of metrics. Pujols still shines through. Like I said, Wright and Hanley (more premium defensive positions) are 2a and 2b behind Pujols, but Pujols is so massively the best player in baseball it isn't funny.

First homer question by me... I'm with you so far, but why take Wright over Youkilis?

Because David Wright is arguably one of the five or eight best players in baseball. As a first baseman Youk is a reasonably good defender, as a third baseman he's about average. Wright is straight good. And a better baserunner. Plus he's, ya know, a better hitter.
I mean really:
Wright: .312/.393/.533 (140 OPS+)
Youk: .294/.391/.483 (123 OPS+)
When Wright is completely at the tougher position which he plays better and runs the bases better.

Forget Youk, then (although he had a better OPS than Wright last year), why Wright over Longoria?

Since the question is who would you want to 'Win right now' with it have to be 1B Pujols.
But if I am going for next 4-5 years I'd pick 3B Wright.

Longo is rapidly getting up there, but I'd be hesitant to take a player after a season and a half. Longo's definitely approaching that level quickly though.

Wright's only a couple years younger than Pujols. Plus I'm not sure Wright > Hanley.

Hanley should be playing the OF not SS.
Hanley should be playing the OF not SS.
He may be bad defensively (he is) but he plays SS. Shift him to the OF and who knows what his offense looks like.

Ben Mcdonald.
Seriously, though, you aren't winning the series with the #1 pick. You could totally fuck it up, and still win with good drafting in the middle rounds.

If you pick Albert Pujols you are well on your way.

If my only criterion was "How do I win a World Series this season?", then Pujols is the only intelligent choice.
