I had to count the votes again, since Kyle (many thanks for all his work, though, and this isn't his fault, either) only listed five or so titles, while far more got multiple votes.
Diablo II is absent here because for some reason, it ended up in the old school RPG poll, and I included Persona 3 on a whim: Both Persona 3 and Persona 4 got nominated, and the series is good enough, and the titles similar enough, that one if them merits some mention here - and in the missus's expert opinion (she's logged 150+ hours on both) 3 is slightly better.

I see a close 4 way race; Fallout 3, Mass Effect, Oblivion and KOTOR

I put down fallout for 5 mos cause I was afraid it would ruin my nigh-life. Sho' nuff, it did. I couldn't put it down for a week and I STILL haven't gotten close to beating it.

Indeed. I logged 200 hours on that game, and I still haven't been to Canterbury Commons (I think I did all the other side quests, though).

Yeah, I'm afraid of getting The Pitt or Broken Steel, because, well, I've got shit to do; and speaking of DLCs, that new one for Mass Effect can't come quickly enough.

Skybase took a shield and enchanted it with a real low level levitate. He would have to equip it a few times but once the effect took place he became superman and could fly anywhere he wanted. Kind of broke the game for him I think.

there was a few merchants in the game that had like, infinite ingredients in stock. so like, you could make a hundred forify intelligence potions, take them, make a hundred more, sell those, make a hundred fortify strength 98339428723982 pts for 9219172987141324232899 seconds, flat fucking win.

Mass Effect. There was a glitch that let you get +24 paragon and/or renegade ad infinitum with Lorik Quinn on Noveria...

I voted FFXII but it was more of a vote for FF in general.

For some reason, X only got one nomination... I really loved it, and the sphere board kicked the licence board's arse, but with the exception of Auron, I just liked XII's characters more. I'm thinking of getting a DS just for Revenant Wings.

Yeah, the sphere board was a million times better than the license board. I really like the whole franchise but found XII kinda weak.

It was really fucking hard, though - Omega Mk XII, anyone? - and I have a soft spot for really tough games.
I didn't find it very difficult but I rarely find any turn based game difficult. I normally have my characters as uber as they get.

XII wasn't really turn-based, though; and the game itself wasn't that hard, but the lower levels of Ridorana, the dark parts of the Great Crystal, or the big optional bosses (especially Omega) were pretty fucking tough.

I think it's the game world of Oblivion and the entire fabricated history that they've come up with that draws me to Oblivion more. Especially after some of the mods, the world just looks amazing at times.

It is based off FFXI's multiplayer but it's still turn based, it just doesn't have random encounters. Now you can buff before you fight. Ultima and Omega have always been a tough fight in all FF games.

shit man, you and i both know that ffx was great - for the time and for what it was. i actually played it recently. just felt like smashing it again. spent like 10 hrs speeding to yunalesca, about 50 hrs smashing the game to shit.
but that's just it, it was the demolition that i took enjoyment from. i was actually completely annoyed w the game. it was a picture of the flaws in that type of game - completely recycled plot, with rigidly linear gameplay until you've effectively beat the game anyway, at which point it is over or you can go on to the tedious tasks of dodging 200 lightning bolts or breeding a gold chocobo.
and on another note, srsly arch. i never played mass effect, but can the glitch you described possibly be anywhere near as badass as a glitch that singlehandedly makes all money irrelevant and gives you the ability to create restore heath 1M pts for 1M secs (effective invincibility)?

Half-Life 2 and MGS 3 are full of faults, and are among my favourite games ever; your point? However, for all its gameplay and graphics improvements, KH2 was almost insulting. The best part of the first game was the exploring, finding hidden treasure and symbols in the maze-like levels, especially Aladdin's cave and the jungle: The sequel was more linear than Doom 3, for fuck's sake. The only redeeming feature were the Gumi Boat and the defence of Hollow Bastion.

You're missing out. I originally bought it for the missus because she's a huge Disney fan, but I basically tore the controller from her hands after a few minutes, and never looked back.
Think Final Fantasy XII meets Secret of Mana meets Jak & Daxter, and you're basically there. Disney or not, it's one of the deepest, best playing, most engrossing action RPGs out there.

This is true.
Even if Hikki Utada's English lyrics make no fucking sense.
I'd give my left nut for Mushroom Kingdom Hearts. All that square enix goodness with the Mario world. It would be like an awesome sequel to the Mario RPG.

I refuse to vote for an MMO (no matter how many hours of my life they've stolen collectively). And no matter how hard I try, Bethesda games all feel like the same, huge, empty worlds. (See: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/zero-punctuation/75-Oblivion )
I loved Fable. The world has so much personality. I love the character advancement system and combat. Of course Molyeux blew the morality system way out of proportion, pissing off many people, but even as it is (rather than what it was hyped to be) it's still one of my favorite RPG's ever.

I'm really surprised Fallout 3 is getting this much love, I would place Mass Effect and KOTOR far ahead of it. It is a great game, no doubt, but it trades player immersion for goofy fun. I never, ever feel like I'm 'in the game' the way I do with Mass Effect, KOTOR, or even Bioshock, and that's not even an RPG.
