my 360 won't play any game, cd, or dvd. when turned on, it just goes to the dashboard and says "open tray." i've been told by microsoft that the only thing left to do after following the troubleshooting steps is to place a repair order for $99. the money is not an issue, but i just don't feel like going through the 3-4 week hassel of sending it to them and waiting for it to be sent back.
anyone else have this problem and manage to find a quick fix for it?

Go buy an Arcade edition and put your harddrive on it - instant fix.

I believe I had this exact issue with my first one (I'm on 3 or 4). It would turn on and the dashboard worked perfectly, it just wouldn't read any discs. This means your drive has failed and there is no real way to fix it unless you are mega-nerd smart. They also wanted me to pay the $99, which I did, only to be refuned 100% a few weeks later. I'm not sure how their warranty works as of now, but I wouldn't be surprised if you get refunded as well. The solution? Send it in and wait a few weeks, or buy an arcade edition and sell off the shit you don't want, then keep one as a spare for the next time one of your Xboxs inevitably breaks. That's what I did.
