Meaning music you listen to while trying to read, write, or transcribe.
I can only listen to Fall Out Boy and Taking Back Sunday while writing papers, and can only listen to instrumental stuff (Explosions, July Skies, Damn Dirty Apes, Mogwai, etc) when I'm trying to read.

I haven't written a paper in years. I've written news paper articles. I'm different as I can have anything on in the background. But usually I tend to listen to something like U2 or DMB.
I hardly ever listen to classical, except when I'm reading or writing. I saw on the science channel that Bach stimulates your brain more than Beethoven. I think I saw that when I was drinking Pabst in my underwear on a weekday afternoon, though, so results may vary.

I thought about downloading classical but I don't know where to start.
Beethoven and Bach were on prehistoric TRL, and I don't wanna look like a poser.

False!
It stimulated that one guy's brain more than Beethoven's did, because that dude was a huge Bach fan.

Wagner, biatch.
Also, Bach's Wir Setzen Uns Mit Tranen Nieder make my dick hard.

I find that listening to the Pirates of the Caribbean OST makes people think I'm sophisticated.

I thought about downloading classical but I don't know where to start.
Chopin's Nocturnes, Haydn's Creation, Händel's Messiah, Mozart's Requiem, Bach's St Matthew's Passion, Schubert's Fräulein vom See or Winterreise, Beethoven's 9th and Orff's Carmina Burana are the usual starting points.
As for me, I can't have songs in the background because I always end up concentrating on the lyrics - but instrumentals work just fine. RJD2 is my thing these days.

Depending on my mood, I listen to either ambient, classical or prog rock when I'm trying to be productive. I used to listen to post-rock, but that genre got really tedious really quickly. Anyways, for classical music, aside from the obvious Beethoveen, Mozart, Chopin (personal favorite), Bach, etc. check out:
Mendelsshon, Schumann, Liszt, Tchaikovsky, Dvorak, Grieg, Mahler, Rachmaninoff, Prokofiev and Bartok
Then, there is crazy 'contemporary' classical - Ligeti, Webern and Iannis Xenakis
That stuff is rather avant-garde and difficult but well worth your time.
If I'm writing a paper, I think the best music is one song which is as long as you want it to be: Keyboard by The Keys.
I always get distracted and end up writing writing the lyrics into my paper if there's any singing.
If I'm not writing a paper, I'm either number crunching or photo-editing, in which case I'll put Nocturne Op. 9, No. 2 on repeat. And I'll take breaks with Massive Attack.

I like any music at all in the background, but since i listen to mostly rock, classic rock, and metal that is usually what keeps me motivated when writing.

If you need to have your head in the game any Incubus after S.C.I.E.N.C.E is pretty chill and can keep you doing your work. I feel that Fungus Amongus and S.C.I.E.N.C.E are just a lil to "crazy" to get work done. The only exception I'd think would be cleaning then you want to listen to anything Incubus did until the "A Crow..." cd.

Arvo Part makes really nice, minimal neo classical stuff.
I like stuff like Gas and Emeralds to work to - Drone/ambient.
