View Full Version : The Aircraft Thread

Thought I would try to bring this back again.

Post pics, thoughts, or comments on all aircraft, current, future, proposed or past.

This can include pretty much anything in aviation, or areospace, from materials to Geo stationary sats.

I'll get started....

My love of the commercial airliner is well known, and mocked.

http://i40.tinypic.com/14kfprq.jpg

Flying in a 737-900ER, 34,000ft over west texas. I walked to the back of the cabin and used my iphone to get the shot. Thankfully no one was in this row. I really enjoy those winglets they have installed on most aircraft. It decreases drag and quite frankly I think it adds a real beauty to the shape of the wing.

Nice looking thunderhead in the distance.

back on topic....

So I am fairly certain I saw 2 c-130J doing touch and go runs at an airforce base in the panhandle of florida. I was a rest stop there and two of them flew about 200 ft over my head and went down for a minute out of sight and then were pulling up hard and fast and banking to the north for another pass. I have a photo or two I will post when I dump my camera onto the hard drive.

this is from a 737 (I think) as I was flying over Mass on my way into Boston for a speaking gig. I shot it with my Blackjack 2....I always request a wing seat so I can watch the fireball upclose.

That's a Panavia Tornado GR.1. It's equipped with an underbelly pod with a system similar to a cluster bomb. It's designed for use on runways, troops and lightly armored targets (and the occasional outdoor wedding). The only downside is that the plane has to fly at the proper dispersal altitude. The Brits did this in 1990 in Operation Desert Storm. One of the pilots fucked up and got shot down and the Iraqi's went on a PR rampage about it.

Anyway, here's my contribution:

First up, a really sweet painting of an F-14 at supersonic just above the water:

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f100/svtdriver86/IMG_0001.jpg

Second, an F-22 going supersonic over Alaska:

http://sciphone.net/albums/userpics/10758/jwarren-raptorshockwave.jpg

Third, a personal favorite of mine, the Eurofighter Typhoon F2 (the fighter variant). Beautiful airplane. This one happens to be orange, which was a limited production model that Eurofighter made to commemorate...something. Can't remember what:

http://sciphone.net/albums/userpics/12699/Typhoon_F2.jpg

That should do for now. More pics later.

The sr-71 is pure speed, no rocket boosters used, it even leaks while on the ground because the body is intended to expand due to heat. There is nothing better.

The concorde is certainly a nice looking plane, and it is amazing for what it was, would have loved to fly on one. for me the beauty comes from what it is capable of. I think of planes the way we are taught to think of the opposite sex when we are young, beauty is on the inside. the meaner, faster, deadlier, and more capable the plane is the better it looks. Case in point the heavy lifting 747s

never been a big fan of the f-117. It is pretty damn cool though, that they nearly finished the desert storm aerial campaign before the iraqi's had time to start lobbing AA into the air.
