I usually get organic dairy/produce only. Organic spinich/salad is great because that shit is usually laced with pesticides. Organic milk/butter is good because it comes from cows that werent juiced. Organic cheese/cold cuts dont really work because that shit has to be cured/processed and for some reason they dont do it to organic stuff. I havent really gotten into organic fruit because I dont eat a lot of that shit. But I wont eat organic cookies or junk food because there's really no point. Also, wholefoods is awesome and not really much more expensive than a regular supermarket.
Okie Medicvet
05-24-2009, 12:08 AM
Over here they don't call it organic or free range, it is 'local', and you can buy a half or fourth of a cow that some independent dude with a few acres is grazing and there isn't the ton of antibiotics shoved in it nor will it have the danger of diseases that can come from a cow spending it's life in a feedlot filled with manure and muck, take it to the local slaughterhouse, and pack your freezer full of some of the best damn tasting beef there is.

Ever since I did a few weeks work helping out a cousin with chickens when one of the farms around these parts was hit by a tornado a few years back, and found out the conditions that they live in because of it, unless I know where that chicken came from, I won't eat it. Let's just say that the entire process would put Upton Sinclair's "The Jungle" to shame, and leave it at that.

bacon wrapped jalapeno poppers.
about 6 jalapenos, halved and seeded (slice down the middle of the stem)
1/2 cup cream cheese
1/2 cup medium or sharp chedder cheese
3 cloves garlic simmered in 2 tbps butter.
6 slices of bacon halved
fill the jalapenos with the cheese and garlic mixture and wrap with bacon, place under broiler for about 10 minutes or until done. Guaranteed awesome, don't eat to many, you will feel like shit.

Fozen hot dogs arent that hard to seperate and then I'd freeze them in packs of 3 or 4. Pull out a pack, cook a couple and then leave the rest in the fridge. They should last a while after they're thawed and even if they dont I have 6 fucking pounds.

Plus if they're anything like the real Mr. Tube Steaks, I would probably eat them all in one sitting anyways. I think with tax and deliver it's gonna come out to a $45 box of dogs. Rougly about 30 dogs in the pack so it would be well under $2 a dog. I'm gonna try and find the same thing at the supermarket. I have tried in the past but nobody stocks this shit. The only place I can get them is 7-11 but they dont grill them, the cook em on those weird roller things for god knows how long. The only way to cook these is on the grill and at about half way through the process, score them slightly. The cheese oozes out a bit and the sliced edges get a bit burnt. Toss that shit on a bun with some franks redhot and fresh chopped onions and it's over clover.

that's exactly how i started out cooking. i used to have to cook meals for the family when i was a kid, and then when i was old enough to legally work i jumped into the restaurant business and took to it instantly. the money kinda sucks working in restaurants, but the upside is that i love what i do. everyday is a new opportunity to learn something new and make that next dish that people will love.

My mum worked and the meals she left for me weren't much better than mince and potatos and soup, but my granmother showed me some recipes that got me started. I've thought on culinary school or classes (and my aunts been encouraging that) after grad, among my options, trade school, college, a year off, I don't know yet. The only restaurant experience I've had is working the fryers at a fish and chipper. But yeah, it's a bit of boost having people enjoy a meal you've made.
Chicks love it if you can cook for them. ftw.

For every cup of rice, I boiled it in 2 cups of chicken broth... and cooked it to its instructions. But then when the broth was absorbed, it was still hard and rough. Almost crunchy. Then I added 1/4 cup more of broth and it didn't seem to have made a difference.
Should I be soaking the rice overnight prior to cooking?

i don't cook a whole lot of wild rice, but here's what i scraped up.
"Because commercial, paddy-grown wild rice is harder and denser than naturally growing wild rice, it must be cooked longer to become soft enough to be eaten; it generally requires cooking for at least 45–60 minutes in a ratio of wild rice to water of approximately 1 to 3."

Ten hour work shifts could be a bit rough. For now, I'd have to start at the lowest postion clearing tables or some thing menial, I'd bet and that would be a hard direction to take from what I'm currently working in landscaping, which is no better when you think on digging holes and laying sod and rocks. Sucks to always start at the dregs. But yeah, I've got options to think about. Chef Ramsey is my inspiration.
Shit I need to get to my afternoon classes.
El, I got a tip that might work. saute the rice in oil and butter, and then in a chicken broth, add veggies. After you've boiled the rice that is.

For every cup of rice, I boiled it in 2 cups of chicken broth... and cooked it to its instructions. But then when the broth was absorbed, it was still hard and rough. Almost crunchy. Then I added 1/4 cup more of broth and it didn't seem to have made a difference.
Should I be soaking the rice overnight prior to cooking?
maybe you're just not the cooking type?

i don't cook a whole lot of wild rice, but here's what i scraped up.
"Because commercial, paddy-grown wild rice is harder and denser than naturally growing wild rice, it must be cooked longer to become soft enough to be eaten; it generally requires cooking for at least 45–60 minutes in a ratio of wild rice to water of approximately 1 to 3."
Hmmmm... I cooked it for about 40-50 mins. Maybe I should increase the ratio of broth to the rice. I remember once making brown rice and soaking it over night made it alot softer to eat... but I just wanted to know your professional opinion.

I recognize the box. We had those at the gas station. They aren't that fucking great

I work at a grocery store, and I've actually done this before. They'll tell you it'll take a day or two to get it there, but unless it's been discontinued by the manufacturer any decent grocery will take care of you.

A little less than a gas grill, since I have an electric grill top. But yes, it'll produce smoke. Put it on the back burner, turn the fan on high and remove the batteries from your smoke alarm. If the food comes out like the reviews claim, it'd be worth it.
