Matthew Vaughn (Layer Cake, Stardust) is moving ahead to direct Kick-Ass (http://www.comingsoon.net/films.php?id=43515), an adaptation of the comic by Mark Millar, says The Hollywood Reporter.

Christopher Mintz-Plasse is in negotiations, while Chloe Moretz has been cast in the film, whose violent nature has forced Hollywood studios to pass on making it. Vaughn, however, is such a believer in the project that he raised the money for the $30 million indie project himself.

Kick-Ass (http://www.comingsoon.net/films.php?id=43515), written by Millar and drawn by John Romita Jr., follows a high school dweeb who attempts to reinvent himself as a real-world costumed superhero named Kick-Ass who seems doomed to failure because he's not athletic or coordinated until he runs into real bad guys with real weapons.

Moretz's character is a ferocious, potty-mouthed 11-year-old who chops down crime thugs with a ninja sword. Mintz-Plasse will play the Red Mist, the angry teen son of a mobster who tries to find uncover Kick-Ass' identity.

The main character, Dave Lizewski, has not yet been cast. Vaughn also is talking to several high-profile stars to play parents or mobsters.

Vaughn wrote the adaptation with Jane Goldman and is producing with his Marv Films partner Kris Thykier. A fall start date is eyed.

Pretty good so far but the comic is only 3 issues in. How this already got green lit for a movie is beyond me but it does seem to be selling well.

I read the first issue, and didn't really dig it at all. The writing/characterization felt really forced.

It made me want to download 2 and 3 but I haven't read them yet so I can't say if that continues or not.

It's got an interesting concept--what if some kid just decided, hey I want to try to be a superhero, with no personal reason to do so?

But Millar crams the "He's just an average teen! He posts on forums, watches movies, reads comics and jerks it just like everybody else! Hur!" shit down the readers throats, and his attempts at being edgy come across as really asinine.

That is the problem, so far the concept is much better than the execution. However so long as Millar isn't writing it most of those flaws can be corrected in pre-production, the studio in effect pays the money to get the idea and characters.

McLovin equals Villain doesn't really fill me with much confidence but I have been surprised before.

'Jesse' from BreaktheFourthWall.com (http://www.breakthefourthwall.com/) alerted us that on Tuesday they got a chance to talk to Mark Millar, who revealed more details about Kick-Ass (http://www.comingsoon.net/films.php?id=43515). Matthew Vaughn will direct the big screen adaptation of Millar and John Romita Jr.'s title, and last Friday Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Chloe Moretz were announced as co-stars:

Me and my friends run a blog (http://www.breakthefourthwall.com/) and Tuesday Aug 19th one of our members got to do an audio interview with Mark Miller during one of his book tours for his new comic War Heroes.

Well during the interview he revealed a little bit more about the Kick-Ass film that was not previously announced.

Including:

That the main character of Dave Lizewski HAS been cast. This happened last week and he is an "unknown actor in America"

Shooting is going to start 3 weeks from now in London, Canada (double for New York) then back to London again.

Nicolas Cage, Aaron Johnson and Lyndsy Fonseca are set to star in Kick-Ass (http://www.comingsoon.net/films.php?id=43515), Matthew Vaughn's adaptation of the violent Mark Millar comic book, says The Hollywood Reporter.

Written by Millar and drawn by John Romita Jr., the Marvel Comics' Icon imprint book centers on a high school dweeb named Dave Lizewski who decides to become a superhero even though he has no athletic ability or coordination. Things change when he eventually runs into real bad guys with real weapons.

Johnson plays title character, while Fonseca plays the object of the teen's infatuation who believes Dave is gay. Cage is a former cop who wants to bring down a druglord and has trained his daughter (Chloe Moretz) to be a lethal weapon.

Christopher Mintz-Plasse is also in the cast.

A fall shoot in London and Toronto is planned.
