To put it kindly, that reaction was not very kind. Treyarch's last go at a Call of Duty game was 2006's Call of Duty 3 (http://www.1up.com/do/gameOverview?cId=3148400) -- and though it is by no means a bad game, its single-player campaign through the French countryside provided few memorable moments. Contrast that to last year's new and shiny COD4, with its modern bombast and perk-driven multiplayer, and you can start to see why some people -- fairly or not -- started to view Treyarch as the franchise's B team.
That's a stigma Suarez seems very eager to shed. According to Suarez, development conditions weren't exactly ideal for COD3 because the team only had about a year to work on it. But this time the team has had full access to the COD4 engine and a traditional two-year cycle to work on World at War, and it seems to be ready to get back on its game.
In typical Call of Duty fashion, World at War is split into two campaigns: the U.S. Marines fighting the entrenched Japanese in the Pacific islands, and the Russians pushing the Germans back to Berlin toward the end of the war. The first mission I get to check out is part of the Battle of Peleliu (http://gamevideos.1up.com/swf/gamevideos11.swf?embedded=1&fullscreen=1&autoplay=0&src=http://gamevideos.1up.com/video/videoListXML%3Fid%3D20783%26ordinal%3D121882525046 8%26adPlay%3Dfalse). Here I'm introduced to both my commanding officer, Kiefer "Jack Bauer" Sutherland, and the new battle tactics employed by the Japanese. After discovering a downed P-51 in the jungle, an NPC squadmate checks out the pilot's body hanging out of the cockpit. Everything appears to be normal, until he finds a live grenade tucked under the corpse -- it goes off, and suddenly, the squad is ambushed by Japanese troops hiding in the brush. A big part of the Pacific campaign features ambushes like this as well as unpredictable banzai charges from enemy troops.
To counter these particular threats, you'll have access to bayonets and a powerful flamethrower. After surviving the P-51 ambush, the squad makes its way through the river and into a wide-open airfield that must be reclaimed. The airfield is defended by a bunker complex, and the quickest way to clear it out is through liberal application of fire. Certain materials in the game are flammable, such as trees, grass, and straw huts (and flesh, of course), so if there's a grassy patch in front of you that you don't entirely trust, a quick burst of flame can flush out any ambushers lying in wait. The weapon itself has unlimited fuel, but it needs a recharge period after heavy use.

But now only part of the airfield is secure -- what happens next assures me that I shouldn't worry about a lack of memorable encounters. Suddenly, I'm embroiled in a massive tank battle between the Americans and the Japanese. My squad is still on foot, trying to weave between the dancing tanks, when I happen upon a rocket launcher and one of those magical unlimited ammo boxes. Putting two and two together, I change the tide of the battle and help clear out the Japanese tanks. Next, I move on to an AA-gun emplacement at the far end of the field, so I switch back to the flamethrower, clear out the crews manning the guns, and do the typical AA-gun shooting gallery against incoming troops and trucks to complete the mission.
It should be stated that this mission was played through cooperatively, with Suarez on the other controller. To be honest, I would keep forgetting that I was playing with another human, mostly because I quickly fell into my COD4 rhythm (World at War feels and moves exactly like Modern Combat) and didn't really need too much assistance or strategy for this particular mission. I'm eager to try out the four-player co-op, which will probably have a greater strategic effect (I'm also curious to see which two missions Treyarch says won't be playable in co-op due to their size constraints).
But the other aspect of multiplayer co-op was demonstrated next in the streets of Berlin. I passed the stick off to GameVideo's Jay Frechette, who played through this mission with Suarez in the competitive mode. Just like in COD4's multiplayer, you're given points for various kills and objectives, and it keeps a running tally of everyone's scores (this is in four-player mode as well). We briefly caught a glimpse of a "Death Cards" option, which adds modifiers to the competitive rules (most likely in the same vein as Halo 3 (http://www.1up.com/do/gameOverview?cId=3144308)'s skulls). The most exciting part about competitive co-op, though, is that you'll be able to retain your points and transfer them over to the online game -- think of it as an offline practice simulator for multiplayer. Beyond this, Treyarch is not quite ready to talk in detail about multiplayer, other than that they're taking a lot from Modern Combat: tweaking aspects of the perk system, having four playable armies (Russians, Germans, Japanese, Americans), and including vehicles. The lingering question is what kind of kill-streak rewards they'll go with, given that UAV radar technology doesn't quite exist at this point in history.

As someone who really appreciated and enjoyed COD4's impressive scripted events, I came away from this demo far less concerned about Treyarch's ability to replicate them. The tank battle in Peleliu and the Russians blasting the hell out of Berlin's streets to the background of a heavy, retro-industrial soundtrack are proof that Treyarch's on the right track. If it can keep that sort of consistency throughout the game, there shouldn't be much to worry about.
But if you're still hung up on the retreat to WWII territory, there might not be much beyond the co-op play to sway you. That's related to my other concern about the game at this point: I'm personally fine with the WWII setting, but I don't quite understand having the dual campaigns, other than it just being a Call of Duty tradition. The two stories don't have much to do with each other (and are actually in different timelines, not just different parts of the world), so the jumping between fronts might be more jarring than we're used to. And both areas of the war are so intense and rife with history that they could have supported individual games: one hopping from island to island in the Pacific heading toward Tokyo, and the other pushing back through Eastern Europe and into Berlin.
Regardless, if Treyarch is saying that this is the best game they've made to date, that's enough for me to drop any preconceived notions and give it a fair shot.

With Call of Duty: World at War, developer Treyarch is aiming to bring the series back to its old stomping grounds while simultaneously venturing into unfamiliar territory. In addition to exploring the frequently overlooked Pacific Theatre, World at War will be the first in the series to offer co-op gameplay. It's a feature that will support up to four players online and two-player split-screen offline. We recently had the opportunity to see how this addition to the series is coming together by taking a spin through one Pacific level and one Berlin level.
Our most recent look at World at War began where the game does, during an escape from Japanese captors on the Makin Atoll. As the game's introductory level, this one had the player going on a tense hike through darkened jungles where guerrilla Japanese soldiers would frequently pop up from unexpected hiding spots. This time around, we got to see a very different chapter from later in the game. Based on the Battle of Peleliu, the Pacific battle with the highest casualty rate from the entire war, this level features a massive fight complete with tanks, autocannons, and more than a few inappropriate uses of the flamethrower courtesy of our first gleeful hands-on session with the game.
http://image.com.com/gamespot/images/2008/231/reviews/944199_20080819_embed001.jpg (http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/action/callofduty5/news.html?sid=6196183&om_act=convert&om_clk=picks&tag=picks;title;6#) Join forces with a friend to play co-operatively in the Battle of Peleliu. (http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/action/callofduty5/news.html?sid=6196183&om_act=convert&om_clk=picks&tag=picks;title;6#)
The Peleliu level begins with a relatively quiet walk through a swamp before building up to a full-scale battle. You and your team are trudging through knee-high water when they notice a downed plane. One soldier goes to inspect the remnants for any survivors when a sudden ambush of Japanese soldiers comes spilling out of the vegetation. The squad fights through this scuffle and makes its way out of the swamp and into a wide-open field of tall grass and the occasional palm tree. This is where we got to take over a controller, and we immediately felt at home with Call of Duty's familiar, responsive control scheme.
One of the ways Treyarch is looking to put a twist on those familiar controls is by giving you access to previously unseen weapons. Right from the beginning, our character was equipped with a flamethrower to flush out enemies hiding in the trees and tall grass. We put it to use early and often, torching everything in sight and watching the tweaked Call of Duty 4 engine handle flaming scenery as blazing grass slowly gave way to charred earth. The flamethrower is a lot of fun to use, though we have the sneaking suspicion it may be a little overpowered. Much of that is because there's fuel gauge for it; you simply wait for it to cool back down when you've been using it for too long. Either way, it's a blast.
Peleliu is a textbook example of Treyarch's desire to showcase some of the more epic battles from World War II. It almost caught us by surprise how quickly this chapter escalated. At one point we had to clear enemies out of a wrecked building, only to emerge on the other side in a full-blown tank battle. Staying alive required hiding behind the friendly Sherman tanks as they slowly inched forward, then jumping into the foxholes to find rocket launchers to take out the enemy tanks. A moment later, we rushed a group of soldiers stationed on an autocannon and wound up using it to take out nearby antiaircraft guns. At random intervals throughout this conflict, we'd see airplanes come crashing down to earth, trucks on fire zooming past us, and general mayhem at almost every turn. It's clear Treyarch is aiming to push the limitations of the current-gen hardware as far as it can in order to deliver massive, chaotic battles.
The actual co-op doesn't seem to change the way you play the game very much. You won't encounter any puzzles that require specific roles from each player like the spotlight scene from Gears of War. Rather, you're helping one another out through good, old-fashioned teamwork. Because the difficulty is ramped up in co-op, you won't be able to run around Rambo-style quite as easily as in single-player. You'll need to stick close to your teammates in order to survive, working as a group in close proximity.
After completing Peleliu, we had the chance to turn our co-op attention toward Berlin with a chapter called Eviction. Ironically, despite the return toward a more traditional Call of Duty setting, this level gave us better insight into some of the new directions World at War is headed. Right from the beginning, your squad of Russian soldiers encounters a few of your countrymen, who clearly have less than friendly intentions. They have a German soldier surrounded, pleading for his life, but just as quickly as you stumbled upon this scene, the Russian in charge of this other squad takes out his pistol and puts and end to the German's pleading.
http://image.com.com/gamespot/images/2008/231/reviews/944199_20080819_embed002.jpg (http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/action/callofduty5/news.html?sid=6196183&om_act=convert&om_clk=picks&tag=picks;title;6#) This cannot end well for the German. (http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/action/callofduty5/news.html?sid=6196183&om_act=convert&om_clk=picks&tag=picks;title;6#)
A darker retelling of World War II's brutal realities is one of Treyarch's primary goals. In addition to these heartbreaking scripted moments, you'll notice more realistic violence. Damage models have been enhanced to display the loss of limbs, blood will flow more freely, and enemies will writhe in agony when caught on the bad end of one of your Molotov cocktails. A further boost in realism is provided by the Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare engine, which expertly renders the effects of bullets passing through various surfaces. This means you have to be suspicious of every cover you hide behind, especially wooden ones. At one point we tried taking a breather behind an overturned wooden table, only to see an area dangerously close to our face erupt in splinters and sawdust courtesy of a nearby German's shotgun.
As we progressed through burned-out Berlin apartments and underground tunnels, we eventually made it out onto the streets. The skies above Berlin were dark and gray, dumping rain onto the fight below. It was a bit of a surprise, having just come from a sunny Pacific setting, but not as much of a surprise as the music that began building up as we pushed deeper into the Nazi-filled streets. Rather than the triumphant, orchestral score we've all come to expect from Call of Duty games set in World War II, this particular scene was accompanied by a gritty industrial rock track. It was a little jarring at first, but we wound up being pleasantly surprised by how well this music worked. The dark, aggressive feeling of the music was a great accompaniment to the dreary and violent look of this scene.
In addition to basic co-op, another, more incentive-based option will be available. Known as competitive co-op, this setting borrows all the customization and rewards from the multiplayer and places them in a story setting. Points are awarded for killing enemies, you can use your perks, and everything you unlock here is carried over to the multiplayer side. Seeing the points pop up above an enemy's head is a little startling in a story setting when you first try out this mode, but it should go a long way toward adding replay value to the campaign.
Our hands-on session with World at War has revealed to us a game that feels at once familiar and shockingly different. The action is pure Call of Duty, that familiar blend of sprinting, hiding behind cover, and looking down the sight of your gun to blast a group of enemies. But from the way those enemies react to gunfire to the ways they plead for mercy when all hope is lost, this is a different depiction of World War II from what we've all previously seen. It's a little more brutal, a little more grisly, and generally more realistic in the way it portrays the horrors of war. It's clear this isn't quite the same World War II we've come to expect. Whether or not that novelty can hold up for the duration of an entire campaign is something we're eagerly waiting to discover.

So they are taking the COD4 engine, which is the COD2 spruced up, which is the Quake 3 engine spruced up. They need to ditch the same old engine, come out with a new one that we can get some DX 10 love on.
At any rate, I've been a COD fan from the start. I can't wait to hide in the bush with a rice patty hat on and slice someone with a sword.

Are you retarded? The Quake 3 and CoD2 engines are completely different, and the CoD4 engine is not the CoD2 engine "spruced up". They're both proprietary.

I may have been half wrong but I'm not retarded:
What gaming engine does CoD4 use?
Infinity Ward has created its own proprietary graphics engine-based on the Quake graphics engine. The new software is heavily modified though. This "new" engine introduces cinematic quality graphics and sound . You can now get realistic depth of field, rim-lighting, character self-shadowing, texture streaming and physics-enabled effects like death scenes which combine rag doll with death animations.

The mid clip reload on the M1 is pretty neat looking but the regular reload looks the freaking same as it did for COD1. You would think that in next gen they would come up with something better. It also seems a bit linear to me.

The week after Fallout 3 (http://www.gamespot.com/news/6196321.html) and two days after Resistance 2 (http://www.gamespot.com/news/6197110.html), it was Call of Duty: World at War's time to get on the date train. This morning, Activision announced that the fifth installment in its wildly popular shooter series will ship for various platforms on November 11. The game is rated M for Mature, and will retail for $59.99 on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and $49.99 on the Wii and PC. The DS version is rated T for Teen and costs $29.99.
Curiously, today's announcement made no mention of the PlayStation 2 edition of the game, which was specifically called out by Activision CEO Mike Griffith during a May 2007 conference call (http://www.gamespot.com/news/6183599.html). Requests for clarification sent to Activision had not been returned as of press time.
Developed by Treyarch, World at War returns the series to World War II following franchise founder Infinity Ward's massively successful Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/action/callofduty4modernwarfare/index.html). It is the first game in the series to depict the Pacific Theater of WWII, where US marines fought Imperial Japanese forces in a series of fierce island battles. Europe is also featured in levels depicting that theater's climactic battle in a bombed-out Berlin. As outlined in GameSpot's recent preview (http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/action/callofduty5/news.html?page=1&sid=6196183), the game uses the Call of Duty 4 engine, but boasts some new additions such as a squad system, competitive co-op, and a single-player campaign experience system.
In October, Activision will be holding public multiplayer betas for the Xbox 360 and PC editions of Call of Duty: World at War. Those wishing to participate can register at the official Call of Duty site (http://www.callofduty.com/) or preorder the game, which will include a token for beta access.

Call of Duty is Call of Duty. They publicly admit to using the IW COD4 engine, and tweeked the perks/MP to their choosing. It's not a rip-off, it's just similar. Just as CoD 3 was similar to CoD2
And how many people liked CoD3?? Then they changed CoD 4.
Do we see a trend here. Copying the old one does not work, yet revamping and making a new better one does.

Annnnnd you're still an idiot. The genre was already dead when. 3 hit and by the time it did hit 4 was already in development .nice fail though, spectacular really
dont know if i like it. played it for a hour and just got pissed off. the dogs are gay. easy to kill. cant beat a chopper. the tanks annoy the fuck out of me. overall it looks good but dont know if i'll bother with it
The dogs are fucking awesome. I've been wrecking people with them. Yeah they're easy-ish to kill, but when there are 2-3 on you, it's not so easy. Plus there are a shit load of dogs. So if they kill a couple, no big deal. All night I was ripping people with dogs.

You are one dumb fuck. If you are going to bring out a new game, make it just that a new game. And beyond that you were talking like the fact they used CoD2 and just changed a few things about it to make CoD3 like it was a good thing. The point is, it wasn't, the game sucked, no two ways about it. I am not saying this game will suck, but I can't see it being much better then CoD4, and when a new game in a series comes out you want it to be much better or different, or else it just isn't worth spending the money on if you can play almost the same game without purchasing a new one.
You also really need to drop the habit of thinking you proved something or won and argument by saying "you're an idiot" or You Fail" or any of your other dipshit like comments. It really does nothing for you.

If you expect any extension to a game, eapecially one a year after one of the top shooters in years, to be leaps and bounds over the previous then you sir, are retarded. It took 4 years of develpoment to get CoD4 engine perfect, and even then its not. This game is a place holder, no bones about it, but to say write off a game because its using a great engine is stupid.

I did not write it off, and I understand that it takes along time to develop a game, but I don't really see the purpose of getting a game that is very similar to the one it id proceeding.
I could be very wrong about this game, and i hope I am, but from the videos I just see Cod4 reskinned pretty much.
I gues I just wish they would take the time to develop a game instead of just throwing one out there every year. It isn't worth the money to me to buy another CoD 4 when there are so many other good games coming up. Far Cry 2 is probably the game I would get instead of this, or the new Tom Clancy.

I agree for the most part. A lot of the weapons are horribly unbalanced (the fucking Thompson rapes anything within 100yds), taking 5 shots with a Gewehr is fucking ridiculous and the dogs really do piss me off. It has it's moments of glory, mainly with it's (hopefully preview of IW's CoD) 'Create a Class' layouts/Attachments. I love the bayonet, heal a friend, and something else I forget... All in all I was mainly going to rent this for the SP but it still feels like it COULD give some MP fun, so long as they tweak a bit.

Speaking to the U.K.'s Official Xbox Magazine (via Joystiq (http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/20/call-of-duty-producer-hints-at-end-to-wwii-games/)), Treyarch's Noah Heller, senior producer on Call of Duty: World at War (http://www.1up.com/do/gameOverview?cId=3168173), said their soon-to-be-released shooter would be their last World War II game. Heller explains:"I won't let your readers read into the comment too much, but we are showing the final battles of the Pacific and the European Theatre and that lets us put a close to the war. I'm sure game companies will be making World War II games for years to come and World War II is a very classic war. But we're happy that we put the war to bed."Judging by most of your comments from last year when Treyarch announced (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3164852) that the next Call of Duty would not be set in a modern setting like Call of Duty 4 (http://www.1up.com/do/gameOverview?cId=3159064), I'm guessing this news will put a smile across a few faces.

If you've always felt that Call of Duty: World at War (http://www.1up.com/do/gameOverview?cId=3168173)'s setting lacked a certain air of supernatural inauthenticity, then GameTrailers TV has a scoop for you. In an exclusive interview (http://www.gametrailers.com/gametrailerstv_player.php?ep=43&ch=4&sd=1) with Mark Lamia and Dan Bunting of developer Treyarch, GameTrailers' Geoff Keighley took the wraps off the upcoming World War II shooter's top-secret Nazi Zombie mode. Unlockable after completing the single-player campaign, Nazi Zombie is a four-player, cooperative survival mode that looks like it's a little bit Counter Strike (http://www.1up.com/do/Counter%20Strike:%20Source), and a little bit Left 4 Dead (http://www.1up.com/do/gameOverview?cId=3155405). The footage that's been shown so far has players using in-game currency to purchase weapons and defensive structures in an effort to fight off the reanimated corpses of Nazi soldiers. The walking dead come in an series of waves that -- much like Gears of War 2 (http://www.1up.com/do/gameOverview?cId=3165887)'s Horde mode -- won't stop until all of the players have been wiped out.
As bizarre as this announcement is, the undead and World War II games aren't exactly strangers (http://www.1up.com/do/gameOverview?cId=2013042). Moreover, some of the earliest press (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3168156) for Call of Duty: World at War had it pegged as more of a survival-horror experience, and blowing the heads off of brain-devouring Nazis absolutely screams survival-horror. Besides, is anybody actually surprised when zombies (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3170888) turn (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3170838) up (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3170882) in a videogame anymore?

October 29, 2008 - You may have had the chance to check out the Call of Duty: World at War multiplayer beta that's going on; if so, you've had a taste of three maps and some of what the game will deliver when it ships next month. But there's a lot more to the multiplayer suite, something we found out recently during a trip to Treyarch to play through all the maps and the new modes. In summary, World at War builds on the top-notch multiplayer delivered in last year's Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. This is a deeper, richer multiplayer experience.
There are basically two theaters of battle in multiplayer, in keeping with the single-player campaigns. There are the Russian-versus-German slugfests, and the Imperial Japanese-versus-Marines battles. The former feature both infantry-only and infantry-and-vehicle battles, while the latter is restricted to infantry-only. The presence of vehicles in the Eastern Front battles introduces a powerful dynamic not seen in Modern Warfare; tanks and armor are devastating, but only if used properly.
Exclusive Gameplay Footage - Watch or download the video here (HD available).
We played through all 13 of the maps found in single-player, first on team deathmatch and then to check out other new modes, such as war and capture-the-flag. Many of the modes from Modern Warfare are also here, such as headquarters and seek and destroy, as well as hardcore modes that feature friendly fire, limited interface, and no respawns.
If you played a lot of Modern Warfare multiplayer, then you're familiar with the build-a-class system and the perks that tie into it. As you play, you gain experience that lets you level up. Leveling lets you unlock new perks (basically abilities), new weapons, and new weapon upgrades. You can then customize your weapon load out and perks, but everything is balanced due to the fact that everyone can only choose a maximum of three perks. The system in World at War is almost identical to this; many of Modern Warfare's perks are here (renamed to adjust for an earlier era), but there are about a dozen new perks to play with. So the Claymore perk from Call of Duty is now the Bouncing Betty perk (that's the name of a mine). Martyrdom still lets you drop a grenade when killed. New perks include the awesome flamethrower, as well as fireproof, which is a flame-resistant suit. Toss back lets you throw back an enemy grenade just in the nick of time, every time. Gas mask protects you against the new gas grenades. Shades are sunglasses that protect you against the blinding white light of phosphorus flares.
Exclusive Gameplay Footage - Watch or download the video here (HD available).
Some of these new perks are tied to vehicles. For instance, you can choose lead foot, which lets you drive a bit faster. Then there's greased bearings, which lets you rotate the turret a bit faster. Believe me, every little bit counts when you're trying to get the shot off at a tank that appeared around a corner with no warning. Or there's coaxial machine gun, which gives you a secondary machine gun to help mow down infantry. The kicker is that you can only choose one of these vehicle perks, so select wisely.
Armor is a blast, literally and figuratively. When I drove a tank I was able to rack up a lot of kills, though it's not as easy as it would seem. Killing infantry with the main gun is difficult because you pretty much need a direct hit to kill them; the splash damage of a near miss seems fairly nonexistent, probably for balancing purposes. To help with the infantry you can get a teammate to jump into the commander's cupola and man the top-mounted machine gun. That's dangerous, though. While you can duck in the cupola for some cover, I had numerous machine gunners killed by snipers. And the big downside to being in a tank is that you're not only a huge target, but you're a very slow one. Infantry can equip themselves with satchel charges and bazookas, and those can ruin your day. And, of course, there are enemy tanks to worry about.
Vehicles are only available on the larger maps; there are only four of them in total, but they're larger than anything seen in Modern Warfare. Some of them are perfect for vehicle warfare, like Seelow, which is set in farmland. Others require a lot of infantry support. I had a lot of fun in Outskirts, a village level that's a warren of narrow streets and which is one of the largest levels in the game. The village is built on a slight hill, and in the middle there's a church steeple that's perfect for observation and sniping. This is a brutal map due to the close-in nature; you'll literally go street-to-street to house-to-house to room-to-room. Drive a vehicle down a narrow road and you can get hammered by infantry holed up in buildings.
Exclusive Gameplay Footage - Watch or download the video here (HD available).
Outskirts is also a crazy fun map to play war mode. This is actually a mode that premiered in Call of Duty 3, and it has returned in World at War. In War mode, the objective is to capture five flag points on the map. The trick is that only one flag is in contention at a time, and this focuses the entire battle on that point. It seems odd to say that the fighting for control of these points was savage, but it was. My team came close to winning, but the defenders dug in like they were the Soviets at Stalingrad and denied us the last flag. That meant that time ran out and we had to go into overtime, which is a battle for control of a single flag. Keep in mind, there's a slight respawn penalty to the team that the game judges was losing during most of regulation, so if you're barely holding on at the end, you're still in trouble in overtime.
Another new mode is capture the flag, which plays just like it sounds like. Both teams have a flag and must capture the opposing team's flag and return it back. The first time to capture the flag three times wins. You can only score if your flag is back at your base, though, so you get in those situations where you'll have the flag but you can't score, which creates a dilemma. You need to send your team out to kill the enemy flag carrier and recover your flag (simply touching the flag when it's on the ground will reset it), but the enemy is also trying to do the same, since they need to recover their flag in order to score. To keep things fair since the maps are not symmetrical, capture the flag consists of two rounds, and in the second round the teams switch sides on the map to neutralize any geographical advantages. Since each round can last 10 minutes, a capture the flag game can go twice as long, making it one of the longest modes in the game.
Another new feature in World at War is a squad mechanic, which is a bit like the squad system in Battlefield 2. Squads let you create small groups within a team, and the advantage is that you not only spawn close to each other, but the squad leader can issue orders that the rest of the squad sees. Even better, squads stick together between rounds and matches, so it's a fast way to party together without having to drop out to the menu.
Playing through the maps and modes made it clear that Treyarch has some good ideas at work here. The large-scale of many of the vehicle maps is a nice change of pace from the tight nature of many Modern Warfare maps, but at the same time if you want brutal infantry combat it's here as well, too. The perk and level systems will encourage long-term play, as you can unlock plenty of fun new toys. The weapons feel oh-so-right, and it's awesome to watch the flamethrower in action. And this was just about head-to-head multiplayer; keep in mind that there's co-op gameplay as well. Put it all together, and it's safe to say that the multiplayer suite may surprise people who aren't expecting much out of World at War.

A random post from a PS3 froum that sums up my feelings regarding COD5 pretty succinctly;
Infinity Ward did a wonderful job of taking Call of Duty from WW2 and bringing it to the modern age. However, Treyarch, the company that made COD3, is back and is taking COD5 back to the WW2 era. It seems that their not only taking a step back in history, but taking a step back with the COD franchise. Don't get me wrong, the other COD games were all good, but COD4 really defined what FPS should be like. WW2 has been done again and again, taking it to the present is the best thing they did, and I hope the next one will also be set in present time, or maybe in the close future. What do you think?
Got my fingers crossed that it'll all work out but I have my reservations...

Partial List of unlocks;
Springfield (Bolt Action Rifle) Unlocks: Sniper Scope, Bayonet, Rifle Grenade.
SVT-40 (Rifle) Unlocks: Flash Hider, Aperture Sight, Telescopic Sight.
Gewehr 43 (Rifle) Unlocks: Suppressor, Aperture Sight, Telescopic Sight, Rifle Grenade.
Thompson (Sub Machine Gun) Unlocks: Suppressor, Aperture Sight, Round Drum.

M1897 Trench Gun (Shotgun) Unlocks: Grip, Bayonet.
Type 99 (Machine Gun) Unlocks: Bipod, Bayonet.
Bar (Machine Gun) Unlocks: Bipod.
Sonic Boom and Last Man Standing have apparently been renamed to Fireworks and Second Chance respectively.
Hmm... am still witholding judgement until release.
4 was simply the first person best shooter to come along in an awefully long time (pissing all over battlefield: bad company in the process) and the reversion to yet another ww2 game (between COD and MOH is there any genuinely fresh material to be covered?) i still have my reservations about how well this will play.
Still its not all riding on the online experience, the single campaign will hopefully be good too (another big plus of 4 over the last couple of CODs was the fact that the story was good).
Loved CoD4 single player and really liked the multiplayer until I got all the unlocks (then I got bored).
I don't play video games much anymore and CoD4 was the last game I bought but this will be my next purchase.

This sucks. I downloaded the WaW demo and it said there was an update. I downloaded the update, ran it, and now I get the Red Rings of Death. I know it's not caused by the update, but it still sucks. I'll have to see if I can send it back to have them fix it. It's an elite model too. I thought they weren't supposed to get the RRoD as often.

I bought it over the weekend for my wii. Me and my roommate bought two guns and a extra boomerang to we could both play. Some mission don't even let dual players to play.

I've picked up crazy amounts of points on War, if the game is going right. As cheap as it sounds, you camp at a flag, wait for the opposing team to stroll in unsuspecting to try and capture it, and grab a few kills. Once you get artillery and dogs, your kills will go through the room. Plus, every time your flag is up for grabs, you get another 30 points.

I love the fact that they got rid of the helicopter and replaced it with dogs. The copter was always such a pain in the ass and cheap as hell in levels like Wetwork. The dogs can still get you kills but you have a fighting chance of actually defending yourself against them.
The only thing that pisses me off is that they left in Martyrdom. Its such a stupid perk. I refuse to use it, but 90% of the people I play against have it on. None of the other perks bother me, but its incredibly retarded to have to run away from everyone you kill because they might have martyrdom on.

God I hate martydom. I wish they'd come up with a perk to combat it. Like one where if someone is almost dead and they have it on, you "pull the pin" early and they get killed by their own grenade. That'd make people stop using it REAL quick.

I can't stand Juggernaut.. to me that is way worse that martydom. If I feel like sniping and hit someone and see that fucking + it drives me nuts. I guess you can counter it with Stopping power.
My one change would be once you unlock an item on your gun like a silencer or scope you should be able to custom your weapon with what ever you want. If I want to use both I should be able too. That is what I liked about Vegas. You could remove your silencer when you wanted to.

Martyrdom is the worst thing ever. I usually use last stand, and I feel a little cheap about it (It takes way too long to finally die, I've had a few 3 or 4 kill streaks just sitting there)...but at least it takes a little bit of skill to take someone down with it.
And I could see Juggernaut pissing me off if I sniped more often, but I suck balls at that. It does piss me off when I see someone snipe me and the crosshairs are clearly a few steps behind me.

I also actually like sniping in this game, the levels are so much better for it. Its a lot harder to see the bouncing bettys than it was to see the stupid laser claymores and the m1 garand is fucking badass.
Also started playing the zombie level. Me and my roommate got to level 12. Our strategy was both get the trench gun, board up the window by the trench gun, and just shoot the zombies running at us while one person watches the window.

"Hi everyone!
So as you know, Map Pack 1 is releasing shortly (March 19th) or has already released depending on when you read this. With it, a new TU / Patch is being released for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3.
We have been reading many of the suggestions in the community rgarding improvements to the game, and hope that you’ll find many of them in the list below. I think the most popular item in this list will be the improvements to the spawn system included in this TU =).
Items Addressed:
* All rifle grenades fired during the first 15 seconds of Search & Destroy will be duds to prevent griefing in that game mode.
* Improvements have been made to the global spawn system – players should never spawn within the line of sight of an enemy.
* Players who equip the Bouncing Betty and melee teammates in Hardcore game modes are now credited with a team kill penalty.
* Players are now deducted 200 points for team killing the bomb planter/defuser in Hardcore Search & Destroy.
* Martyrdom no longer causes “direct impact” grenade deaths in Hardcore modes.
* Players ranked higher than the maximum allowed in the Boot Camp playlist are no longer able to play in games with lower ranked friends in that playlist.
* “Bayonet jumping” has been disabled.
* Further improvements have been made to geographical matchmaking.
* The “New” icon clears when a player has viewed an unlocked weapon (X360 only).
* Many zombies were raised from the dead.

I got to level 14 with my roommate. The box reappears in other places, you just need the time to find where that is. We would usually just keep one zombie alive and distracted while the other person finds it and uses it and then just switch up. There are a lot of good bottle necks in this level and perks like juggernaut and fasthands really help if you can save up the money. We would have made it further but my roommate had the laser gun and ended up being killed by a floor zombie we missed.

World at War Map Pack 2 - expands the addictive CoD multiplayer experience with three new multiplayer maps and one new co-op/Zombie map. Battle to control the river bridge in “Banzai” - a bright jungle map featuring a waterfall and hidden caves. In “Corrosion” face down your enemy in a shattered train yard, and in “Sub Pens” wipe the monsoon rain from your eyes as you struggle over a bombed-out submarine base. The Zombies make a return in “Shi No Numa” (Zombie Swamp) featuring Perk machines, the deadly new Wunderwaffe DG-2, new Achievements / Trophies… and flaming Hell Hounds!

POO POO CANNON
05-08-2009, 02:40 AM
Haha, you think that's bad? Wait 'til you see the shit that flies at you on downfall at the beginning part.
But on Heart of the Reich, make sure you take out the first two guns with satchel charges. It seems rediculous, but if you can get two panzers ready for the last two guns, you can take them out with ease, which will make your life easier, as the third gun is unbelieveably difficult to get, while the fourth one can be taken out from a distance with an panzershrek (sp?). That being said, I didn't do it this way, but I realized afterwards it would have been much easier this way.
As for the second part, when you have to storm the building, I went into the buildings directly ahead of flak gun #3 and set up there for a while, before clearing out the larger more enemy heavy building to the right. Once those two were clear (enough) I grabbed the PTRS from the second building and started shooting the guys coming out of the building for 10-15 minutes until I could move up to the stairs infront of the building (taking cover infront of the car on the right side). From here, you don't have to move, you just have to survive and kill enough people so that eventually Chernov and the boys move along and does thier thing.
I played through on vet the first time, and I thought it was way more fun than doing it on another difficulty. Plus the Platinum trophy was lulz.

they only made the game harder on vet by increasing the amount of grenades. I finished it on vet. I died more due to grenades than any other method. Pretty fucking gay i thought but at least i have the full 1000g

Yeah that is what I am working towards my 1000g. What is strange is I got my save point by beating the first 2 88's the Panzer is not where it should be. Right in front of the tank... So I am stuck sniping guys... Once I get past the car, which turns off the spawning it is usually ok, but the grenades...
One time I swear I was lit up by around 8 grenades. Sure guys have an eye for me and for what ever reason I am more of a threat than anyone else in my AI team. But the amount of grenades is crazy...
I heard one guy on the xbox boards say he got around 40 grenades thrown at him in the first minute of Downfall.
Cant wait for the new maps. That should occupy me till MW2 in the fall...

Yeah, once you get past the first checkpoint on Downfall, it's pretty smooth sailing until the end. Just remember to go left at the beginning. The shit that gets tossed your way to the right is ridiculous.
I don't understand all the hate on this game, I thought this one was the best in the series besides COD2.

I enjoy the game. I still have my CODMW game. I play both from time to time.
Can't wait for the new maps next month for WAW.

I still haven't gotten a chance to play a lot of the last map pack, but it's going to seem like a lifetime of waiting until MW2 comes out, so anything that will keep WaW exciting and new I will be all for.

Sitting around and watching clips of other people play WaW on youtube is better than anything the Wii has to offer.

Just got them tonight... I only had a chance to go through them once... I find it takes a good day or 2 to form an opinion. Cause right away I am getting shot like mad cause I don't know the cover points. But they look like there is a ton of spots to move around in...

You're the first person to say this. What an important contributor you are!
I haven't played much of the new maps, but what I did play kicked ass. Left little area for campers to do their shit. I played the Zombie mode mostly and it's fucking hard. You can venture outside, but you're moving in swamp and you move fucking slow. And for some reason the zombies can move fucking fast.

I have a question, what mode have you played these new maps on? I usually play headquarters, and for all my playing time I have only come across 2 of the 1st map pack maps, and even then very rarely. I know that sometimes some of the maps show up more on different game play modes, and was wondering if I should try a different mode to play them.

It seems like Banzai and Subpens or whatever show up 85% of the time and the other map only comes around very rarely.
I finally played the new Zombie map today. It's pretty rad. I like how you can finally go outside. I just need to get some people to play it with me. I can only get to level 6 by myself.
