I submit that it cannot!
Damn Blizzard. Reminds me of when they announced SCII. It's been over a year now and the game is still not remotely close to release, but that's a whole other topic. Unless they were significantly closer to completion when they announced Diablo III... we're in for a helluva wait. But it's gonna be so badass.

Development Progress
Development started on Diablo III in 2005 but it has since then undergone some major redesign. Currently, most of Act 1 is complete in terms of art and design, and the team has mostly moved on to Act 2. Four of the five classes are operational and at various levels of playability. The game is now “mostly” in production mode, which means the art style has been firmed up, they have a game play that they all like and enjoy, and they have moved on to building things or building tools which allow them to build things better.
Although much progress has been made, it is too early to pin down a release date and so all we can do is keep our ears to the ground and promise to keep you posted as soon as we hear the faintest rumblings in the distance.

Btw, I have three lvl 85+ characters (a concentrate barb with 22k defense, blizzard mf sorc, and a hammerdin that pwns anything that moves) on West Ladder if anyone wants to play Diablo 2 with me.
My account name is gnr-man.
Did anyone catch the article posted on Evil Avatar about the developers commenting on the fan-altered screenshots (displaying what they thought the environments should look like, i.e. much darker and gloomier).

Really interesting read, I found myself agreeing with the Dev on pretty much everything he said as well.

That's all their argument was. They thought that the art direction was too colorful and they want it to be darker.

Blizzard will release the game they want, has it ever proven wrong?
The uproar caused by that rainbow in one of the shots made me laugh, and the explanation behind it.
Its so negligible I had to squint to make it out, fanboys can be so fucking stupid sometimes.

Sounds like they're going to announce at least one more class at Blizzcon '08. If you have DirectTV, Blizzcon will be broadcast on Television. If not, they should have the live streams on their website again, like they did for the WWI in Paris not long ago.

And the one with the most tellig evidence that we may see a new hero..
Diablo III Class Design
You’ve witnessed the raw physical power of the barbarian and the terrifying alchemy and diseases of the witch doctor. Now you can learn more about these heroes -- and see if any other champions emerge to defend the mortal world.

I know I said it on Old GMF, but I'm not so fond of the witch doctor character. it seems to me it's a lamer version of the Necromancer with some Druid/Sorceress characteristics.
I'd like to see them bring back the paladin class (or something quite similar), one of my favorite classes behind the sorceress and barbarian classes.

I totally agree with you pollo, it seems very weak. The witch doctor will be used for PvE only, and then i cant seeing it being much of an asset.

I couldn't agree more, and I think it would be devastating if those classes are eliminated. going by Blizzard's word that there will be five classes, it could possibly be barbarian, witch doctor, sorcerer/sorceress, amazon/rogue, and paladin. I don't see why the assassin and druid would be back.

I remember reading an interview where the Lead Designer for Diablo III, Jay Wilson, made mention of the fact that only the Barbarian would be coming back initially. They want to give D3 a distinct flavor separating it from D2.

and I'm sure they'll bring in another new class other than the Witch Doctor despite my criticism for it. but to go along with the history of the game, they need to at least bring back two of the following classes: paladin, rogue/amazon, or sorcerer/sorceress.

Couldn't you say WoW stole from Diablo 2 by incorporating both a Druid and a Paladin class? (And at a stretch the warrior class?)
I don't know what other classes they could take from WoW that wouldn't be too similar to D2 classes or just something that couldn't really fit the lore. Whatever they pull out, I hope it really exceeds our expectations. That may be asking too much, but this is Blizzard.

Diablo III Wizard Class Revealed

Blizzard has revealed the third (of five total) classes for Diablo 3: the Wizard. According to the press release, "A wielder of the elements and a master manipulator of time, the wizard can hurl environment-shattering lightning bolts, channel explosive arcane energies, and create pockets of space outside the normal temporal flow." The class, along with Barbarian and Witch Doctor, will be playable this weekend at BlizzCon.
Yea... That's the class I'm going to be using most likely.

seems like a kickass version of the sorceress ... me likez ALOT.
so we have three classes down: barbarian, witch doctor, wizard. any speculation on the last two? I'd love to see them bring back the paladin.

Yeah this class looks fairly ridiculous. I may have to give my clicks to the Barbarian though... and I'm eager to see what the other two classes are. Some speculate the Amazon and assassin will follow, but I have a feeling we'll be seeing at least one that is entirely new.

it's one of those characters you love to have in a group when doing any runs, especially Baal Runs in DII. plus if you like to be in the middle of the action rather running/teleporting from enemies like the Sorceress does, the Paladin and Barbarian are your guys.
so far my only beef is with the Witch Doctor character (reminds me of a necromancer/druid character mixture), but the Barbarian and Wizard characters look sweet as hell.

when did Blizzard announce this? maybe I missed if if it was said during their conference to announce DIII is in the making.
not that I'm completely shocked, but I'm sure they'll make a character similar to the paladin as the wizard character is pretty alike to a sorceress.
They're gonna have to make some kind of Assassin/Rogue/Monk fighter class to balance out those three classes, obviously.
Maybe a Ranger or something.

During the Blizzard's WorldWide Invitational when they announced DIII, Jay Wilson had said something along the lines of wanting to build a new identity for Diablo III in terms of characters. But you're right, if nothing else, the next two classes will most likely be brand new, but perhaps with a vague similarity or two with an older class but with radical changes.
Edit: Yeah, what Roll said essentially.

Even if it's not the Pally in practice, just the idea of some kind of mostly-Warrior/part-spellcaster like the Pally was just fun to play. Not just raw tanking, which I never liked, but also not pure magic users.

I'm starting to get excited about D3. I've been playing the crap out of D2, also. My battle.net ID is "CoachTesvich" if anyone's interested.
New Class Guesses:
Monk-
Melee fighter similar to the Assassin, but probably better described as a mix of Palladin/Assasin. Look for him to have party skills (something like the auras/warcries), and skills with +damage to the undead and/or demons, while still having some type of Martial Arts Tree. Maybe make him a Bruce Lee lookalike?
Alchemist-
When D2X was announced way back when, I was thinking about what could be the new characters and thought about Alkor and Anya, and how they're referred to as "alchemists." Maybe Blizzard will have a spellcasting type who specializes in throwing potions? or enchanting items? Although I think the Witch Doctor may classify under this heading, I was wondering if Blizzard would go in that direction for D3 or maybe D3X.
Rogue-
Blizzard has said they've got only one returning character from D2 for the intial release and that will be the Barb. However, I don't think they've said anything about bringing back D1 characters. Screenshots and gameplay movies have been based around Tristram, so why not have the Rogues come back and be playable characters, thus filling out the character list with a "Bow" class?

I seriously doubt it, as I was just doing some speculating and throwing my two cents in. These classes are completely figments of my overactive imagination. The last I saw on a new class was the Wizard gameplay video from a month or so ago.
...but I think a Shaolin-style Monk would be really, really cool.

01-04-2009, 09:58 PM
oh ... you got me a little too excited if Blizzard released the other three classes. personally, I hope they don't have a character like the Assassin nor Druid, although the Witch Doctor looks like a mix of the Druid/Necromancer and to a lesser extent the Sorceress. the Wizard class excites me and who doesn't love the Barb class.
I wouldn't mind seeing the Rogue class come back, but I'm against the Assassin character or some form of it come back.

To me, Assassins were more for PvP, than PvM. In my recent log-on's, I've noticed that Assassins tend to join games with tanks to help finish killing a super unique or boss. If your play-style was dueling or pissing others off, then Assassin ain't a bad choice.
Due to the Pally being great in parties and the Assassin being good at PvP, I thought a nerfed character assimilating those qualities would be a good choice for D3. This is why I thought a Monk was a good guess, being able to go toe-to-toe with martial arts/tanking/dodging, yet being "holy" would push him to want to help the party (by having party-aiding auras or prayers).
Hopefully, I've made some point here. If not, here's the new character page on D3.com. http://www.blizzard.com/diablo3/characters/ Me likey.
