Whilst flicking through the movie channels in the week I stumbled upon the classic "Goodfellas". I've got it on DVD, seen it possibly a dozen times and it was still awesome to watch again! When comparing it to the likes of "The godfather" and "Casino" I still think it's the all time top gangsta movie. I was quite impressed with "American Gangster" and reflecting back on it in a few years might add to its reputation.

Check out Donnie Brasco. Awesome film that doesn't get that much credit. I can watch it again and again.
Forget about it is like if you agree with someone, you know, like Raquel Welch is one great piece of ass, forget about it. But then, if you disagree, like A Lincoln is better than a Cadillac? Forget about it! you know? But then, it's also like if something's the greatest thing in the world, like mingia those peppers, forget about it. But it's also like saying Go to hell! too. Like, you know, like "Hey Paulie, you got a one inch pecker?" and Paulie says "Forget about it!" Sometimes it just means forget about it.

Gangster films = films about Al Capone
Gangsta films = films about 50 Cent and life in the ghetto
I always thought Casino got a bum rap, I think it's better than Goodfellas, frankly. Well, maybe that's unfair; I certainly like watching Casino more, I'll leave it at that. Training Day is great but the telescoping of the timeline so that everything happens in one day is contrived and hurts versmilitude. Godfather's I and II are overrated but still ridiculously awesome films, the sections in II with DeNiro contain some of my favorite movie scenes ever, just great stuff.

I've never understood what people mean when they say shit like this. "Yeah, it's fucking awesome, but overrated." It's like, yeah, it's a great movie, but it didn't give me free blowjobs and pudding, so I'd give it an A, at the most.
Is there some level above "fucking awesome" that I'm unaware of?
Also, Goodfellas wrecks all of Scorsese's other movies in that genre for this insane shot alone:

Godfather I and II are great films, and even though I don't know what they beat, they probably deserved best picture each year. But a lot of people - a LOT of people - talk about them like they're each one of the five to ten best films ever, which I think is crazy talk. They're awesome, awesome films, but they don't rank as arguably the greatest films ever made, at least not for my money.

I saw a commercial for Righteous Kill last night. It spent most it's time just flashing the names of the good movies Pacino and Deniro were in, then it said "the greatest actors of our generation, together for the first time!"
The fuck? You forgot Heat, you motherfuckers.
Also, who's generation? Our parents? They were untouchable back in their younger days, but the movie Deniro opened up the new millennium with was The Adventures of Rocky & Bullwinkle. And Pacino's become this raspy voiced, screaming geriatric.

I didn't see it until after also. Still holding out hope they go forward and make the trilogy happen just like Infernal Affairs 1-3. Could easily be done if they act sooner rather than later and get cracking on it. I believe (haven't seen them yet....) 2 or 3 is a flashback movie for the most part. So you could still have Leo and Damon and Nicholson and the main cast back.

You see 4-5 guys, but you assume they've got street level people working for them throughout the city, same way you assume there's a larger crew than Nicholson, three old people, and DiCaprio in The Departed.

The crew he was always working with were the three old people (French, Fitzy, and the irish guy). I like the Departed, but it was ridiculous. Because Nicholson's all, "Gee, who's leaking all this high level information? Hmmm...there're the three guys I've worked with for years, and then this new guy who just joined and recently dropped out of the police academy. Hmmm...no idea who it could be. Oh well, I'll just draw some naked women now."
And I don't mean runners, I mean mid-level organization people below Tony and his immediate crew.

Yeah but with the departed you know he had to have some other guys to help set up that deal for the microchips. And he had to have connects for keeping an eye on Matt while a cop and keeping track of the cell phone etc. Not saying Tony didn't have something like that, but there wasn't much to his crew ie not gang.

At this point, in some ways it doesn't matter because Tony Montana is a gangster, if not the gangster, simply by perception. Having a sense of the underlying organization like you do in Godfather or Goodfellas, would be considered a welcome, but an inessential part of the genre.
