http://image.motortrend.com/f/10677081/112_0808_05z+audi_r8_spyder+rear_view.jpg
he open-top version of Audi (http://www.motortrend.com/new_cars/01/audi/index.html)'s R8 (http://www.motortrend.com/cars/2008/audi/r8/index.html) range-topping coupe has been caught virtually undisguised in Germany near, where else, the Nurburgring. Were it not for the flat-black paint, the Audi R8 (http://www.motortrend.com/cars/2008/audi/r8/index.html) Spyder (an official name has yet to be announced) could easily be mistaken for a production car.
The Audi R8 convertible's canvas roof looks to have forced the removal of the R8's signature off-color side body panels and a redesign of the engine cover was also apparently necessary. The fuel filler cap has also been moved onto the rear quarter panel from its original position on the long B-pillar. For safety, rollover protection bars have been added, though these are not visible unless the top is down. Audi may also add air intakes located behind the seats and the chassis is said to have been strengthened to improve rigidity. With the roof up, the convertible has a very similar shape to the coupe, especially when viewed from the side.
The R8's 420 horsepower 317 pound-feet 4.2-liter V-8 should be unchanged for the convertible. The upcoming V-10 variant of the R8, which is expected to make its debut in October at the Paris Motor Show, will debut as a coupe and may remain so, but it is possible it may also come in ragtop form, as the vehicles are more or less the same other than the obvious engine difference

I would like to see a convertible hardtop, but this will do.

My dad wants a Tesla. It's hopelessly impractical.

So I was at work the other night, and I saw this Hummer H2 that was heavily customized and had a shit load of chrome on it. When you look at it like that, Hummers make sense to me, and honestly, if I ever get the money to pay for the car and the monthly gas bill, I'll want to buy one.

impractical? if they can get past their transmission woes and make it to production the tesla roadster would be an amazing city car. it's all-electric and is faster than most production conventional fuel vehicles. and at a mere $109k for the introduction models it's not going to be long at all before these vehicles are proven and the price drops dramatically.

The price will drop if it sells wll enough initially. I stil wonder why these all electric cars do not have solar panels on teh roof or something. The range is still kind of limited and paying for electric at home just moves the pollution from the car to a coal fired electric plant most often.

... The tesla has a range of 280 miles on a 4 hour charge. Solar panels are highly ineffective ways of getting electric energy anyways. On top of that if you're driving in the city the solar panels wouldn't work most of the time because of building shadows. Also, they are ugly as shit.

when a 'sports car' starts to weigh in at close to 4 THOUSAND pounds, it stops being a sports car, regardless of how fast it goes. a magnetic levitation train goes fast too, but you don't call it a sportscar. nor a dragster.

sure, it's a feat of engineering, but this 'sports car' is gonna run out of brakes and tires by the time it's done being sporty.

Generally I figure sports cars for light weight tiny convertibles, but WIki says

"A sports car is a term used to describe a class of automobile (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automobile). The exact definition varies, [1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sports_car#cite_note-0) but generally it is used to refer to a low to ground, light weight vehicle with a powerful engine. Most vehicles referred to as sports cars are rear-wheel drive (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rear-wheel_drive), have two seats, two doors, and are designed for more precise handling (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Car_handling), acceleration, and aesthetics. A sports car's dominant considerations can be superior road handling, braking, maneuverability, low weight, and high power, rather than passenger space, comfort, and fuel economy."

Since he Name is GT R I would say it is more likely a GT car that can out handle and out excellerate most sports cars

it shouldn't. when the cam timing is off (due to faulty/broken sensor), the electronic brain will just cut off your power/fuel/revs sooner than normal so the advance function doesn't even kick in.

modern marvels allow these failsafe mechanisms. i'd avoid trying to run it up to redline (duh), but you should be fine

Awesome. I have noticed some hesitation at times, which freaks me the fuck out. Like going down the highway on my way to work, the engine with hesitate for a second, or when I'm pulling away from a complete stop, it'll stutter for a second. Freaks me out every time.

"In our post-race inspection — yesterday was the day we were going to chassis dyno cars — our inspectors discovered some shims that were placed on the gas pedal stop," Robin Pemberton, vice president of competition for NASCAR, said Sunday. "It was magnets that were about a quarter-inch thick that prevented the accelerator from going 100 percent wide open.

"The intention was to manipulate the numbers that we get when we get our information and data off the dyno."

It comes with everything one could want, and I noticed as I was poking around that the 4 wheel drive transfer doodad had 3 settings, 2HI, 4HI, 4LO. I understand what 2HI is, 2wd. However, I was wondering under what circumstances it would be good to use the 4HI/LO settings. I heard using any is bad when it's not slippery, because it doesn't have a frontal diff. Also, do I have to stop when I switch from one to the other? Put it neutral? Or can I just switch on the fly? The manual says I can do it on the fly, but the manual also says, and I quote "switching into reverse while moving forward at a high rate of speed is probably a bad idea". Seriously. Halp?

Also, one of the big things I noticed from switching from the M3 to the Yukon was the brakes. I understand the braking will be a tad different in going from one to the other, but the brakes on the Yukon are just unbelievably soft. It feels like you have to press the pedal at least a foot before you start slowing down, and the even more troubling, is that there always seems like there's a foot more to push the pedal. The brakes were just changed not even 2,000 kms. ago (new rotors and pads in front, new drums and whatever you use with a drum in the back), so I know it's normal. Is there any way to get them "tightened", or should I just adapt?

I hate seeming like a noob here, but I've never driven anything other than an M3, M5, and ES350 to the point where the car was an extension of myself. I'm almost there with the Yukon, but it's just that I'm used to cars, not wheeled aircraft carriers.

4hi is for 4 wheel drive at regular speed 4lo is for pulling boats out of the water on steep ramps. You are best off never using either unless you get stuck in the mud or need to pull a stump out of the ground.

as far as the brakes go you have to realize the Yukon weighs a bit more than the M3 and is a tad harder to stop. If you want to stop faster I suggest putting the truck on a diet, getting larger wheels and better brakes.

Ah, thanks. That's what I thought. Although If I get myself into some heavy snow (which is what my university town is sometimes known for) can I throw on 4HI to keep things smooth?

Wait, hold on a second.

According to this (http://www.4x4abc.com/4WD101/def_turnpart.html) I can never use my 4WD ever, unless I'm climbing everest? So, let's say there's 8 feet of snow on the ground, I'd still have to drive with rear wheel drive only, because according to that link, when I try to turn my truck will explode killing everyone within a 40 ft. radius. This completley negates any advantages over any other car on the road when it comes to traversing snow and ice, correct?

If so, sad poo is sad :(.

I drove a 92 suburban during high school and the only time I ever engaged 4 wheel drive was when I was pulling our boat.

I was at the ALMS race at Mosport this weekend and we always see some pretty cool cars there. This weekend was the ZR-1 and the GTR that were my favs. There were TONS of other cool cars but these were the most rare. I have to say the ZR-1 looked like a normal Z06 until it got really close and even then didn't look all that different for great. Not the GT-R that is a sexy car in person.

Sadly my battery in my camera was dead so I wasn't able to get any pictures.

I have always had a love for Audi's. The look, the style, I just don't know what it is about them, but I really love them.

BMW, not so much. I think it is the fact they are far to common where I live. They are also pretty bland to me, with the exception of the M5 and the Z4.

The 335i, well I just love the idea of a V6 twin turbo car. The fact that it almost keeps up with the M3 gives it major cred in my book.

}{, how often do you go through tires when running your car at the track?

}{arlequin
09-10-2008, 03:47 PM
depending on the weather or track conditions, hoosiers (slicks) last about 3-4 weekends, you might struggle a bit towards the end of the 4th weekend.

that kind of shit is better assesed through counting heat cycles though

typical weekend will have 3 practice sessions on friday = 3 cycles
warmup, qualifying, 2 sprint races on saturday = 4 cycles
warmup, enduro on sunday = 2 cycles w/ the second one lasting 90-120minutes so it's actually 5

from an average of 12 cycles/weekend, people have gone between 30-40 cycles on a set of slicks

you'll usually see people keeping track by putting dashes on the sidewalls

then there's the occasional brain fade moment in the thick of things when you get a bit of red mist and get a little rough on the brakes, flatspotting (ruining) one tire completely. murphy's law dictates it will never happen w/ an old tire but rather when it's still fresh. that $uck$

every wagon could be considered a mom-mobile. if you don't go for the big engines, i'm fairly sure you can be w/in your 20k into the base models of the other brands.

i have no problem w/ vw, except that they are all over the place w/ quality. seems like if you could avoid getting the car built on monday morning, or friday afternoon, you'll be fine... otherwise, things go wrong and it gets annoying real fast.

figure out which model you would be interested in and see what the price range for used ones is. i'm willing to bet a 30k mile beemer is still stronger buy than a brand new vw

Does anyone know anything about VWs?

We have a 97 Golf that whenever we lock up the factory alarm sets, and almost always goes off when we try to unlock it. Is there a way just to disable this system, or should we just keep nothing valuble in it and leave it unlocked like we normally do?

HELP

2003 passat, in good condition etc, tiptronic transmission.

I parked the car on saturday about midday and when i went to go to work yesterday morning, it wouldn't start at all and seemed completely "dead"--ie no turnover, no clicking, no nothing.

when i turn the key, the daytime running lights come on and the light for the anti-slip comes on, but that's it. The clock and mileage which are digital are supposed to be on all the time, but aren't. When the key is "on" i get no electrical function.

So, my initial thought was completely dead battery, so i tried to jump it, which didn't work, and then called triple a, they came and tried to jump it, also to no avail. In fact, the guy checked the battery with his little tester unit and it said that it didn't even need to be jumped.

next thought naturally is electrical, he checked some of the fuses, they seem fine, but i'm going to double check them all when i get home from work.

He seemed to think that there was some sort of "master fuse" type deal somewhere but wasn't sure about it.

After I double check the fuses, my next move is pretty much to have it towed and take it to a mechanic (or more likely a dealer).

does anyone have any idea what might be going on? I think it's an electrical problem and it's either a fuse or a loose wire connection somewhere, but was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on where i might look or how i might avoid a trip to the shop.

Alternator?

The Dude
09-23-2008, 09:56 AM
i dunno, i would think if it was an alternator problem that i would at least be able to start the car...and the aaa guy said that it (the battery) was in good shape...

but in anycase, would there be anyway for me to check the alternator without going to the shop?

}{arlequin
09-23-2008, 09:56 AM
not sure if the model year has that little computer chip in the key that sends a signal to the computer allowing the car to be started. sometimes when the battery in the key goes out, it ends up affecting this function.

as far as troubleshooting the specifics, i would check the manual to see if the fuse for ignition and/or starter shares any other electrical functions. sometimes they'll have two or more systems under one fuse ie: wipers don't work, so the dome light may not work either etc.

if there are more than one on those circuits, try and see if the other one is working. that would narrow things down to one particular item.

if it's a loose connection somewhere, it will be tough to find. what's worse is that replacing the ignition for a new one may not solve the problem.

i'd say check the distributor cap and rotor just in case, but the fact that your clock/odo isn't getting power is troubling

The Dude
09-23-2008, 10:07 AM
Yeah, i'll double check all of that...its one of those flip key things with the remote and key all in one unit...but the remote works fine.

it's all very fucking weird.

my care just went into the dealership today and the guy called me up after about an hour to get authorization for diagnostic hours and then he rattles off a whole bunch of other shit that he "wants me to know about" and was kind enough to quote prices:

front brakes: $792

Serpentine belt: $265

dented baffle: $445

rear tires: $395

i laughed and told him: you have 2 hours

}{arlequin
09-29-2008, 08:42 PM
that blows. i don't think it's the wiring, most of the cars have 3-4 big 'multi plugs' that need to be connected and then all is fine... the labor is coming from having to remove the entire dash to get at the cluster. tons of little screws and clips, and on some occasions, even the windshield has to come out to access all of them properly

There are three ways of "tuning" cars: the American way, the Japanese way, and the German way (excluding Turks).

I mean, here, we don't allow under-floor neons, tyres sticking out, nitrous oxide and such nonsense, and our government watchdogs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Technischer_%C3%9Cberwachungsverein) keep a very keen eye on modifications, so what you do here if you have some money to put in your car is you try to co-ax some extra hp out of it. Some bodywork, sure, maybe lower the thing on some Koni shock absorbers, but mostly people would fiddle with the ECU, the exhausts, cylinder heads, and the like.
We sort of laughed at the American tuning TV shows because they would fit pool tables and trampolines and what not into those cars, but usually leave the kid with the same shit engine he came in with - not that he'd care, because he had rims and LCDs and shit.

Unfortunately, kids are always emulating whatever comes from the US, so that foolishness is starting to pop up here, as well.

what you are talking about is "pimp my ride" and no one with a halfway decent education (I'm being generous) actually likes that shit. the only reason that show worked is because we are entertained by "gangster" black people like xzibit. Everyone knows the cars are shit though. Most people that know what they are talking about respect mods to the drivetrain and suspension.

so anyways, Im in a rental right now since my car is at the body shop for a week (minor dent in right fender and right passenger door for a total of $1400), the insurance companies are picking up both the tabs. The display panel is slick, I dig that purple hue, fairly peppy engine 2.5L i believe, automatic, however that has to be one of the smoothest automatic transmissions I have yet driven. Typical stiff german ride but that is to be expected. Couple things I do not care for, the placement of the cruise control is on the left of the steering wheel opposite of the turn signal arm, and the driver seat sits too high, and I do not see any way to lower it. I suspect that this thing was most likely built in mexico and not in germany, I think VW does its lower end shit south of the border.

We pretty much don't give a fuck about fuel economy, whatever gets the most HP. The car barely has an interior other than 2 racing buckets and a bevy of gauges. It does however have a reasonably comfortable back seat minus the seatbelts. It's street legal as long as there aren't any police around.
It's currently about 560HP but after this winter it should be pushing somewhere around 800, unless the money runs out.

I know a few have said this already but none have posted pics of it, only links(and one kick ass vid). So, here's a couple shots from the Bash this year at Bowling Green.

why do you think that? not a good tuner? more show than go?

Alas, always:(. It is the generals attempt to show the engine off a little bit. A la, nearly every mid engined high end sports car out there.

AC Schnitzer are fine by me.

But what do Alpina do? They take a standard V8 5-series, tune it a little bit, and then sell it for more money than the far quicker M5. I love what Bovensiepen does with interiors and wheels, but I never understand how people can buy a less powerful tuning car (even though Alpina is considered a manufacturer, not a tuner, but still) for more money than a more powerful factory variant. They did the same foolishness with the Z8, too.

Imagine if Brabus took an SL 500, got, say, 480hp out of the 5.5-litre V8, and then sold it for €10,000 more than the 525hp AMG SL 63. It's just stupid.

Harlequin, is that an old 1000? I think some of the old BMWs look tough racing like that.

3.0 CSL, methinks. The little blades on either side of the bonnet give it away.

Ah yes, I had forgotten the CSL. You're right.
