We will find out this evening. They are pretty sure it isn't serious, but they may just push his next start back or something.

We get Wainwright back this weekend, and he is going to be our closer, so we need Carp to be healthy if we want a shot at the playoffs.

yo andrew,
I'll be in Chi-Town this week on business training,
I went and got a ticket for myself for Wednesday's night game.
All I could get was section 242 row 5.
Ususally I don't go for upper deck but the seats looked straight to me.
at least it's 5th row.
I just want to take in the stadium and the scene. it seemed like I'd be able to see the place pretty well from there.
Plus, getting Cubs tickets was kinda tough.
Have you ever sat in that section?

I've sat in 240. That's as far down the 1st base side I've sat. You're in the last section, almost in a corner. Might be obstructed slightly.
I usually sit bleachers or in the 230's now. It's an extremely tough ticket, so beggars can't be choosers. As long as there's no pole in your face, it'll be awesome. Do you mean Wed. the 20? Cuz I think this week the Cubs are on the road :)

almost every seat, no matter what section, gets a full view of the field

No. Not in Duncan's system. Reyes has always been a high-strike pitcher, and that is something Duncan has been a fan of. When they tried to change him, he wouldn't do well, and would end up going back to his high fastball.

He just wasn't going to work out here. I think he has the potential to be a middle of the rotation guy, but...not in St. Louis.

Danny Haren and Kiko Calero for Mark Mulder. Yeah. That worked out GREAT.

I trust Duncan more than anyone else, so if he thought he wasn't going to work, then it was probably the right decision.

We really do have to make some moves this offseason and spend some actual money. Izzy's huge salary will be off the books, so we have to at least spend that much on some more relief. It's frustrating never going after any big name players, we have the money to run with the big clubs, but we never even try.

Look at the cubs first two months of the season...besides the games with the brewers (when the brewers took care of business) its all pittsburgh this, NL West that, throw in some cincinnati and washington for good measure. I think Jayson Stark gave him the nod the other day. If the Sox win the central it helps his cause a ton. Hamilton and Kinsler are both beasts though. I'd have to check JD Drews numbers too. I was saying Quentin was in the hunt (along with Dye) a while back and no one really seemed to agree.

Tonight he hits number 35 and it was his 11TH first pitch home run. I love his aggressive nature at the plate. He got hit 6 games in a row, a couple were intentional a couple were not. He just digs in and stays put. Might be dangerous but man he's an animal this season.

Well, being from St. Louis (and therefore a Cardinals fan and Cubs hater), I'd like to give a quick comment on the "Jason Isringhausen done for year" story. Basically, he's pitched like a steaming pile of horse crap this year... blown a multitude of what should have been easy saves. Now it comes out that (a) he's got a torn elbow tendon; (b) his elbow has been hurting for awhile; (c) he didn't tell anyone about it; and (d) he needs season-ending surgery.
...
I'm having Scott Rolen flashbacks now. (Played like crap for months, before it was found out his shoulder was shredded - and told nobody.) A lot of locals are saying "Izzy is a warrior... don't hate on him... he's a nice guy... he did the best he could". I'm calling bullshit. If you're hurt, and you KNOW you're hurt, and it's affecting how you play - then you've gotta tell the manager. If you don't, you're being selfish. As far as I'm concerned, Izzy can go pitch for Toronto next year, and join his good buddies Rolen and Eckstein.
...
I understand the whole "you've gotta play hurt" thing... bruises, sore muscles, the whole nine - but trying to pitch with a torn elbow tendon? No thanks. Go blow saves for somebody else next year.

Oh give me a break. Isringhausen wasn't the only person sucking in the bullpen. Although it fucks up your whole entire pitching staff when your really good closer goes down with an injury. That makes everyone have to change their roles, and all that jazz.

That's why, as long as Carpenter can come back at the end of the month, Wainwright and Perez will do WONDERS for our bullpen, by having one of them close out games.

We are still only 2.5 games out of the wildcard. Don't count us out yet.

Although it seems people are so quickly to forget that a lot of people were picking StL to finish almost dead last in the Central this year.

Very true - Villone has sucked, Franklin has sucked for the last month... about the only guys in the bullpen I trust are Springer and McClellan - and that's not because they're great, it's because they're consistently competent. I honestly don't think Carpenter is going to make a huge difference; I hope he starts 7 more games and blows the league away, but it's more likely either (a) he shuts it down for the year, or (b) he makes a few average starts, THEN has to shut it down. Which is why I expect Wainwright to rejoin the rotation, and Perez to close, with the rest of the bullpen trying to hang on for dear life in the 6th-8th innings.
...
I'm not counting the Cards out - I mean, look at what they did in '06. I had them figured for 75-80 wins before the season started, so I'm pleasantly surprised by how well they've done. Most likely scenario, though? They finish with about 90 wins, and miss the playoffs. Still a damn good year when you consider they were expected to be crappy.

At the moment, the Cards have 34 saves and 27 (!) blown saves. Next closest in the NL is Washington, with 22 blown saves. Gagne, by comparison, has 10 saves and 5 blown saves.

So, the Cards' bullpen is averaging roughly 5 saves in 9 chances; Gagne would be at 6 saves per 9 chances. Yikes. I didn't know it was THAT bad.

The local opinion is that the current ownership is looking to keep costs relatively low for 4-5 years (until the loan on the new Busch stadium is paid off), at which point they'll sell the team - and the sale will be easier if their payroll is $90m instead of $120m. The new stadium is awesome, but fans are getting tired of patchwork solutions (Todd Wellemeyer, Ron Villone, Cesar Izturis) to major holes in the lineup (rotation, bullpen, shortstop). It reached a boiling point when within a couple of days of each other, the Brewers got Sabathia, the Cubs got Harden, and the Cards got... jack squat.

and yet St. Louis didn't go out and get a guy like Rauch or some other bullpen guys that would of been greatly beneficial?

if you guys make the postseason, that bullpen isn't going to cut it, especially if you face a team like the Cubs, Mets, or Phillies.

That also has to do with our starters not going very far into ballgames lately. It's one of those things where if just one cog stops working, the whole entire system is fucked.

I honest to god think if Carpenter comes back and can go the rest of the way, and then add Perez and Wainwright to the bullpen, that we will have one of the best "upgrades" to a pitching staff in general than anyone else did at the trade deadline.

GM Mozeliak kept saying that Carpenter and Wainwright were basically "the trades" we were gonna make. If they both come back effectively, he will be dead-on.

Wainwright starts tomorrow.
Told you so.
Let's assume Carpenter's not going to be ready for another week or two. Put Wainwright in the bullpen, and your rotation is Lohse - Wellemeyer - Looper - Piniero - Thompson. Put Wainwright in the rotation, and let Perez close, and it's Wainwright - Lohse - Wellemeyer - Looper - (Piniero or Thompson). Carpenter comes back? Now it's Wainwright - Carpenter - Lohse - Wellemeyer - Looper.
...
Damn. I LIKE that last rotation. A lot. Even if the Cards miss the playoffs this year, I hope they can keep that group together for '09. (Yes, I know the chances of Lohse pitching for the Redbirds in '09 are infinitesimally small. But I can hope.)

This is correct. The Reds, Pirates, and Astros are figments of your imagination.
If I was a Bucs fan, I'd be livid.
See, there's a logical flaw in this statement. There ARE no Bucs fans - only poor, deluded souls who live within 20 miles of downtown Pittsburgh, who think that the "Pittsburgh Pirates" are actually a major league baseball team. True baseball fans know that they are in fact a AAA farm team jointly owned by the other 28 real franchises. The other AAA farm team posing as an MLB operation? The Kansas City Royals, of course. Sad thing is, I grew up in KC and used to love that team. George Brett, Frank White, Bret Saberhagen, Willie Wilson, etc. The current ownership (David Glass, WalMart heir) has absolutely run them into the ground. It's like the evil bitch owner from "Major League", but in real life.

bitch, bitch...the brewers schedule was much harder in the first half, it had to even out at some point. Look at the cubs first two months of the season...besides the games with the brewers (when the brewers took care of business) its all pittsburgh this, NL West that, throw in some cincinnati and washington for good measure. Very similar to the brewers last 3 weeks or so when the only good team theyve had to play is the cubs (when the cubs REALLY took care of business). It all evens out, now its the brewers turn to beat up on the NL West (except they get to deal with manny on the dodgers).

You won't be complaining about the schedules when both teams have a 3 city road trip in the middle of september. That will be the brewers FIFTH of the year...the cubs have only had one to deal with (and one of the cities was....chicago!). and no, im not trying to make excuses for the brewers, the cubs are the better team, this much was clear two weeks ago. Doesnt mean the brewers cant change that and win the division in september though.

It wasnt so much as Wade but McLane and the past 3 GMs. McLane is all about spend shits load of money and win now instead of making the Astros a great franchise down the road. He spend loads on Lee, Berkman, and Roy but 3 guys arent going to win a championship especailly when they are close to going over their prime if not there already.

Thats why I said earlier that even though I love Berkman and Roy-O and wish they would retire as Astros we need to trade them and Tejada. We would get a shit load prospects and/or draft picks. It may take us years to get back to the top but we would and have lots of money saved from signing said prospects. Unless we get a new smart owner or some super GM the Astros are never going to win a title.

But I'm afraid that if we do get a new owner that the Astros wont stay in Houston unless they realize the fan base that is there, seeing as how they still manage getting over 35000+ fans which I have no idea how they do. Probably only because we went to the WS 3 years ago. But now that the old reminisce of the Astros that were are gone and we arent making the playoffs I think the numbers are going to drop.

Sheets is a bit farther along at 29, but has a fantastic K/BB rate and again will still have almost nothing but good-age years under contract.

Young, homegrown talent is not magical, it fills a need just like any other. I was all for hanging onto Melky (I thought Damon was done for) and Kennedy/Hughes (both projected to be good) rather than go after Santana too hard. However the Yankees are a year older, IF Pettitte comes back he won't be amazing, Moose can't last forever, then Wang, Joba, and who gets that 5th spot (4th and 5th if Pettitte doesn't return)? Maybe you fill it with the winner of Hughes/Kennedy, but I don't want to trot two pitchers who've done absolutely nothing out there (if Pettitte is gone) when we could've signed CC or Sheets.

Pretty sure they gave Evan Longoria a massive contract. Why? Because he is a young, talented player and thus every year under contract can be expected to be a good one. The Yankees issue wasn't simply signing free agents, that doesn't anger the baseball gods or whatever. The issue was signing guys like 31 year old Jason Giambi to a 7 year deal that averages out to a little under $20 million a year or often injured Carl Pavano to a 4 year $10 million per deal.

Deals can be amazingly good. STUPID deals are bad. Signing CC or Sheets would not be stupid.

bad contracts don't really affect the Yankees the way they affect other teams, either. If the Twins dish out $50 mil to Carl Pavano and he gets hurt, they're fucked. The Yankees can just bring Roger Clemens out of retirement.

Young talent is good because it's young, not because it's brought up through the system. The old idea of home grown talent only holds semi-true because if most players are drafted 21-22ish, then spend a year or two in the minors then their first period of Major League service will eat up most of their prime years (their most likely to be best). So again, signing players is not inherantly worse than raising your own talent. You just have to make sure (as would be the case with CC or Sheets) that you sign a GOOD deal.

Oh I don't think those deals are why they're missing the playoffs, I think a losing more than 2/3rds of Posada and Wang's seasons to injury, coupled with 21 games of ARod, a down year plus some dings early on to Jeter, and Kennedy and Hughes utter failure are the reason for that.

Although it is worth saying that if the Yankees had spent the $40 million they spent on Pavano on less-injury prone young guys (or just saved it) they might be in a better spot.

Stax

Yes, but hindsight is 20/20. Hughes' injury made last season mostly a wash, and Kennedy was up a year earlier than expected, so you still didn't know what to make of either one yet. Obviously we'd be far better off with Santana right now than Melky/Hughes/Kennedy, but one of them could've been the next Dan Haren (and price controlled at that) or whatever.

And as for your quote correction, it's true that the low price is nice but as you said that tends to affect the Yankees less. Young talent is young, and youth makes it more likely you will succeed.

Bad contracts affect the Yankees MORE SO than other teams, because the Yankees are the only ones that throw godly numbers of money at these players.

No one else wanted to pay Pavano the type of money the Yankees did. When you give everyone these huge contracts, you basically guarantee that there is no way in hell they are going to be traded, since no one will take on that kind of contract.

So when a player (like a Pavano, or a Giambi) get these huge contracts and don't "live up" to the expectations...the effect is multiplied.

Says who? CC maybe, but this is the first year Sheets has actually been healthy. Every other year he has been hurt. So who's to say he goes to New York for 20 million a year for 5 years, and doesn't get hurt? There goes another 100 million dollar contract, and "top-tier" player down the tube.

You're a dumbass. If, as Carl said, the Twins sign Free Agent Failure for $10 million a year, that is $10 million a year they cannot spend on anything else. If the Yankees spend that money, the Steinbrenners raise the payroll $10 million if need be.

No one else wanted to pay Pavano the type of money the Yankees did. When you give everyone these huge contracts, you basically guarantee that there is no way in hell they are going to be traded, since no one will take on that kind of contract.

A meaningless statement. If the player is good the Yankees won't want to trade them and if they aren't good other teams probably won't want them. The Yankees do not need to "salary dump" or whatever.

So when a player (like a Pavano, or a Giambi) get these huge contracts and don't "live up" to the expectations...the effect is multiplied.

No, it isn't. Multiplied means increased. The Yankees can absorb a hit like Giambi's injury last year, Pavano's every year, or Posada this year (I-Rod's a rather nice replacement player, no?) than a small market team. Spending more doesn't make the contract worse since the spending doesn't hurt you in the first place (whether it succeeds or fails).

He pitched a full schedule in 02, 03, and 04 (when he was filthy disgusting) and still threw 150+ innings in 05 and 07. The only year he missed a LOT of time was 06. Using your 5 year example Sheets would only start getting old the last couple years of that deal (and you usually end up paying for the first couple years of good value with a less-so one on the end). BP projects him to be of similar value to Chien-Ming Wang over the next 5 years, and he's the Yankees ace.

Yes...but those huge contracts play a decent part in that.

I'm not saying it's the money itself that hurts the team. If the Yankees wanted to, they could up payroll to 500 million. It's the fact that they can't trade away those massive contracts. They are stuck with them. Getting stuck with players that don't need to be there just makes things a lot worse.

Think of it this way...if Scott Rolen had been making twice what he was, we wouldn't have been able to trade him for what we got. More than likely not then, we'd be stuck with him, and we probably would have 10 less wins, just based on the fact that he has not performed as well as Glaus, and the team morale would have been in the shitter.

Not one of their best pitchers being injured in mid-June, both of their pitching prospects failing, their catcher missing basically the whole year, and their reigning MVP missing an 1/8th of the season?

CrazyCarl

checking B-Ref's stats, most of the players that are sucking are players the Yankees brought up through their system. Jeter (subpar), Cabrera, Cano, Kennedy, Hughes. Big money free agents/trades like ARod, Damon, Matsui, Giambi, Abreu, and Nady are all doing well.

A. Rolen has a 3.3 WARP, Glaus a 7. So no, to begin.

Close. Having bad, old, often injured players is related to having stupid contracts. Having ARod, Mariano Rivera, and BTW even Jason Giambi (though he's overpaid he's still quite good) every year but last year is simply a product of having a lot of cash to spend so you buy the best.

Having a shitty manager doesn't help either. Joba should not have been starting.

No, I think you are assuming the Yankees should operate like the Cardinals, which doesn't make sense.

You do not need to be able to trade players if their contracts do not hurt you. Again, had the Yankees signed Pavano to a more market value price, who the fuck would want to trade for him? And even if they did, how would that help the Yankees, they have the money to get what they need? And EVEN if they did want to trade him, what the fuck would they get?

Trades, especially trades of big contracts, help teams like the Cardinals that want to be able to unload money in years they aren't contending. Ignoring that the Yankees have contended EVERY SINGLE YEAR they've been throwing money around like this (even this year, though this time they'll likely fail), there's no reason they would want to/need to dump salary.
