Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 to Include 'Porn Mode'

Microsoft’s latest Internet browser includes a piece of software that allows Internet users to hide the audit trail of websites they have visited.

The InPrivate feature on Internet Explorer 8, nicknamed “porn mode”, allows users to conceal the sites they have viewed at the click of a button.

Once the setting is chosen, others using the same computer will not be able to see which sites have been accessed. Other browsers have similar functions, but this one is far more prominent. Although casual users cannot see the previous user’s search history, authorities such as the police will be able to access it if necessary.

The software may be hailed as a victory for privacy campaigners, but it represents a serious threat to Microsoft’s bigger rival, Google. In allowing surfers to access websites but conceal their browsing behaviour, Microsoft prevents Internet sites from collecting information about their users — data that is then used to sell targeted advertising.

Marketing companies try to target adverts at Internet users whom they believe may be interested in certain goods or services.

Google, Yahoo! and Microsoft are fighting for bigger shares of the world’s Internet advertising market, which is estimated to be worth $40 billion a year and is expected to double in value by 2010.

Google, which is the world’s biggest Internet company, holds the lion’s share of the online advertising market, leaving Yahoo! and Microsoft to hold the second and third slots.

So lucrative is the Internet advertising market that Microsoft tried to buy Yahoo! for $47.5 billion this year solely to compete with Google. Yahoo! rejected Microsoft’s approaches, even though the software company had been willing to pay 72 per cent more than its share price.

Google tried to expand its targeted advertising business when it bought DoubleClick for $3.1 billion this year. The Internet company is attempting to increase the proportion of its revenue that is derived from display advertising.

The company has been criticised for the quantity of data it gathers about people who use its services.

David Mitchell, of the information technology agency Ovum, said: “If the hype around privacy gains more credibility, more people will hit the private button. There is a potential threat here to click-through advertising.”

Microsoft’s so-called porn-mode button strikes at the heart of an ongoing row about Internet privacy and how much online companies and advertisers know about our behaviour and interests.

At the extreme end of the debate, the online search engine Yahoo! was vilified by human rights campaigners after it disclosed details of its users to the Chinese government. The information led to the arrests of writers and dissidents. One journalist cited in the case was tracked down and jailed for ten years for subversion after Yahoo passed on his e-mail and IP address to officials. Yahoo! had argued that it had no option but to comply with local laws.

The browser became available as a “beta” version last night but will eventually be included with Microsoft’s Windows operating system.

Microsoft and Google failed to return calls last night.

Its part of Googles Analytics, a tracker that doesn't use cookies. I have their web addresses rerouted in my hosts file back to my own PC as to effectively block them so Google can't track my shit. Problem is Gmail wants to establish a connection to the site first it seems, it tries and after continualy failing it makes be reenter my password and one of those random skwed letter picture things. Takes a while to log in because of it.

Google takes aim at Microsoft with new Web browser (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080901/ap_on_bi_ge/google_browser)

SAN FRANCISCO - Google Inc. is releasing its own Web browser in a long-anticipated move aimed at countering the dominance of Microsoft Corp.'s Internet Explorer and ensuring easy access to its market-leading search engine. The Mountain View-based company took the unusual step of announcing its latest product on the Labor Day holiday after it prematurely sent out a comic book drawn up to herald the new browser's arrival.
The free browser, called "Chrome," is supposed to be available for downloading Tuesday in more than 100 countries for computers running on Microsoft's Windows operating system. Google (http://us.rd.yahoo.com/dailynews/ap/ap_on_bi_ge/storytext/google_browser/28913641/SIG=10o9q5t9q/*http://www.google.com/) said it's still working on versions compatible with Apple Inc.'s Mac computer and the Linux operating system.
Google's browser is expected to hit the market a week after Microsoft's unveiling of a test version of its latest browser update, Internet Explorer 8. The tweaks include more tools for Web surfers to cloak their online preferences, creating a shield that could make it more difficult for Google and other marketing networks to figure out which ads are most likely to appeal to which individuals.
Although Google is using a cartoonish approach to promote Chrome, the new browser underscores the gravity of Google's rivalry with Microsoft, whose Internet Explorer is used by about 75 percent of Web surfers.
Google's lead in the lucrative Internet search market is nearly as commanding, with its engine processing nearly two-thirds of the Web's queries.

If your too lazy to click the above linkage:

For the past few years, Google has been trying to take advantage of its search engine's popularity to loosen Microsoft's grip on how most people interact with personal computers.
The assault so far has been focused on a bundle of computer programs, including word processing and spreadsheet applications, that Google offers as an alternative to one of Microsoft's biggest money makers, its Office suite of products.
Google has tried to make its alternatives more appealing and accessible by hosting them for free over Internet connections instead of requiring users to pay a licensing fee to install them on individual computers, as Microsoft typically does.
Meanwhile, Microsoft has tried to thwart Google by investing billions in the development of its own search engine and making an unsuccessful attempt to buy Yahoo Inc. for $47.5 billion.
The tensions between Microsoft and Google now seem likely to escalate with Google's foray into Web browsing.
Until now, Google had been trying to undermine Internet Explorer by supporting Firefox, a Web browser developed by the open-source Mozilla Foundation. Bolstered by an advertising partnership with Google's search engine, Firefox ranks as the second most popular browser, with a market share of more than 10 percent. Google recently extended its advertising alliance with Firefox through 2001.
Bearing the stamp of Google's renowned brand, Chrome could be an even more formidable rival to Explorer.
Still, Google's name is no guarantee of success. For instance, Google's instant messaging service hasn't made come close to catching up to the market-leading products made by Yahoo (http://us.rd.yahoo.com/dailynews/www/ap/ap_on_bi_ge/storytext/google_browser/28913641/*http://www.yahoo.com/), Microsoft and Time Warner Inc.'s AOL.
In a blog post Monday, Google touted Chrome as a more sophisticated Web browser better suited for displaying the dynamic and interactive content blossoming on the Web as people migrate from television, radio and newspapers.
"The Web gets better with more options and innovation," Sundar Pichai, Google's vice president of product management, and Linus Upson, Google's engineering director, wrote in the posting. "Google Chrome is another option, and we hope it contributes to making the Web even better."
Microsoft brushed aside the threat posed by Google in a statement Monday from Dean Hachamovitch, Internet Explorer's general manager.

"The browser landscape is highly competitive, but people will choose Internet Explorer 8 for the way it puts the services they want right at their fingertips ... and, more than any other browsing technology, puts them in control of their personal data online," Hachamovitch said.
Even as it has backed Firefox, Google has openly fretted about the possible ramifications of Microsoft's huge lead in Web browsing.
Google is worried that Microsoft could abuse its power by manipulating Internet Explorer's default settings in a way that might diminish traffic to Google's search engine, which serves as the hub of the largest online ad network. In 2006, Google contacted the Justice Department to raise alarms about changes to Internet Explorer that Google believed made it more difficult to install search toolbars made by Microsoft's rivals. Although regulators decided not to intervene, Microsoft subsequently modified the way Explorer handled the selection of search toolbars.

Included

Based on a comic book (http://blogoscoped.com/google-chrome/) (yes, you read that right, a comic book) sent out to the Google Blogoscoped (http://blogoscoped.com/archive/2008-09-01-n47.html) blog, the Google Chrome browser will be:

Open source, built from scratch
Make use of a JavaScript virtual machine called V8
Support multiple processes so each tab runs in isolation so bugs and slow-downs only hit a single tab (creating what’s called in the comic book a “sad tab”) rather than bring the browser crashing down
Revolutionary use of tabs (the tabs will be at the top of the window rather than below the address bar
Incognito mode that kinda sounds like Internet Explorer’s InPrivate mode
Make use of WebKit open source rendering engine
Plugins removed from the rendering process and placed in a separate process
Web app support
Whiz-bang address bar called “Omnibox”

You're correct. But only for that "session." As long as the browser window stays open you don't have to keep entering passwords, etc. But once the window is closed then you have to re-enter the password/cookie sessions.

Found out today from a buddy that i guess chrome uses a different process for every tab.
It opens with 2 processes i guess and every tab you open, opens another process. So you better upgrade your RAM if you use about 50 tabs for your pron.

Just chrome open uses more memory than IE does multi-tabbed i found.

Chrome is only in BETA so maybe they will fix the issue but probably not.

there's no issue to fix. chrome is designed this way intentionally. it means that when a tab crashes it doesn't kill everything. furthermore it allows the user to reclaim used memory at-will instead of having (technically) to close the entire browser. currently, both ie and ff continue to build a pile of memory usage with each tab opened, but when you close a tab the reverse doesn't always happen. so google has enabled users to regain lost memory in the event that they really need it. just close a tab.

there are certainly issues with google beta, but tabs isn't one of them. the entire user interface is built around the tabs, hence why they're at the top and very prominent.

of course you don't have to take it from me: google released a comic that demonstrates exactly what makes it unique.
