EDMONTON SUN (http://www.edmontonsun.com/Sports/Hockey/2008/08/21/6523916-sun.html): Derek Van Diest reports Bouwmeester is unlikely to finish the season with the Florida Panthers. The Wings recently re-signed Downey to a one-year, two-way contract, paying him $575K if he plays with the Wings but only one-sixth that amount if he's demoted to the minors.
About Gaborik:

Risebrough said he's had no trade talks with other general managers. "I think it would be prudent to [extend his] contract before the start of the season. That's all I'm dealing with right now," Risebrough said."
PIONEER PRESS (http://www.twincities.com/wild/ci_10248175?nclick_check=1): John Shipley reports Mikko Koivu will probably center Gaborik's line and James Sheppard will center the second line. The Wild plans to build around young players like Koivu, Pierre-Marc Bouchard, Nick Schultz and Brent Burns and hope that Gaborik will also form part of that core. Risebrough also dismissed trade rumors that he's shopping Gaborik. "I'm not going to respond to rumors, or outrageous rumors, about trades," he said. "You have people on your side who are fiction writers. I won't deal with fiction writers."

The Colorado Avalanche might know by Thursday if captain Joe Sakic (http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/teams/players/bio/?id=831) intends to return to the team for the 2008-09 NHL season.
According to the Denver Post, Sakic has scheduled a news conference Thursday before his charity golf tournament in Colorado. While there is no guarantee that Sakic will discuss his intentions, time is running out, as Avalanche veterans are scheduled to report to training camp for physicals on September 19.
When contacted by the Post on Monday, Sakic's agent Don Baizley said the 19-year veteran is still undecided.
"The hang-up is whether Joe's up for the task," Baizley told the Post. "He sets the bar pretty high, and he needs to make sure he's up for the task."
Sakic is an unrestricted free agent, but if he returns to the NHL, it's believed that he will only return to Colorado.
Baizley also updated the status of his other prominent Avalanche free agent, Peter Forsberg (http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/teams/players/bio/?id=816).
"Peter would like to play if his foot problems are solved, and he's checking away at that." Baizley told the Post.
Forsberg, who has been plagued by foot problems for the last few seasons has recently started skating again in Sweden.

DENVER - The Colorado Avalanche Hockey Club announced today the signing of Joe Sakic to a one-year contract.
"I am happy to announce the signing of Joe Sakic to a one-year contract," said Avalanche Executive Vice President and General Manager Francois Giguere. "Our entire organization is very excited to have Joe back for another season. As the only captain of the Avalanche, his record of achievement speaks for itself. Having him return is great for our franchise and community, but also for the game of hockey."
"Ultimately it came down to the fact that I still enjoy playing and competing," said Sakic. "I'm comfortable with my conditioning and my overall health. I'm ready for the start of camp and am looking forward to the upcoming season."
Due to the Democratic National Convention in Denver this week, the Avalanche organization will hold a formal press conference on Tuesday, Sept. 2, at 1:00 p.m. at the Family Sports Center in Centennial, Colo. At that time, Avalanche Executive Vice President and General Manager Francois Giguere, along with team captain Joe Sakic, will announce the details and answer questions related to this announcement.

SAN JOSE - The San Jose Sharks have locked up an important piece of their future.
The team has signed defenceman Marc-Edouard Vlasic (http://tsn.ca/nhl/teams/players/bio/?id=5409) to a four-year contract extension that will kick in after this coming season.
He'll earn US$735,000 in the final year of that entry-level deal.
Vlasic played all 82 games last season and put up 14 points (2-12) while averaging 21:36 of ice time.
"Marc-Edouard is one of the top young defenceman in the game and we are excited to have him in to fold for the next several years," said Sharks GM Doug Wilson. "He has a tremendous future with this franchise and we look forward to watching his continued development."
Vlasic was selected in the second round of the 2005 draft and made his NHL debut a year later.
In 163 career games with the Sharks, the 21-year-old has five goals and 40 points.

Richardson not ready to pack it inVeteran blueliner wants to play one more season
By BRUCE GARRIOCH, SUN MEDIA
Luke Richardson wants to play one more season in Ottawa.
But whether the Senators can accommodate the 39-year-old defenceman remains to be seen.
While a younger player might be worried about his future, Richardson, an Ottawa native who played 76 games for the Senators last season, has been around the NHL long enough to know that things happen for a reason, so he'll continue to prepare as though he'll play this season.
Richardson, who made $500,000 (all terms US) last season, is ready to go to camp without a contract, but with the Senators already committing more than $48 million under the $56.3-million salary cap for 2008-09, there might not be much left in the kitty for the 19-year NHL veteran.
Richardson pondered retirement in the off-season, but wants to give it one more shot.
If it doesn't work out, Richardson likely has a bright future in a coaching, scouting or management role in the NHL.
Right now, his desire burns to take another shot at trying to win a Stanley Cup.
"I know now that you have to be patient," Richardson said before heading to the gym for a workout yesterday afternoon. "You never know how long these decisions are going to take. This might not be something that happens until (the Senators) actually get to camp.
"I'd like to play. I've been getting ready to play. I feel good and I just made a decision that I'd like to come back to play one more season. We'll see what happens. I feel good. I'd like to think that with all the hard work I've done that I can get a chance. I want this to pay off."
The Senators are in a tough spot where Richardson is concerned. Ottawa GM Bryan Murray appreciated everything he did for the organization last season, the role he played in the dressing room and, most importantly, the solid play he brought on the ice.
But the Senators already have defencemen Chris Phillips, Anton Volchenkov, Christoph Schubert, Brian Lee, Jason Smith, Lawrence Nycholat, Brendan Bell and Matt Carkner under contract. While talks with 22-year-old restricted free-agent blueliner Andrej Meszaros continue.

Left wing Jeff Friesen - the Sharks' first-round draft pick in 1994 and a popular presence in San Jose for seven seasons - will be invited to training camp as a tryout.
Friesen, who has played on four NHL teams since the Sharks traded him to Anaheim in 2001, did not make an NHL roster last season.
"He has a very good history here,'' Wilson said, "and we look forward to him coming and being given the opportunity to play.''

Hours after Ottawa GM Bryan Murray held a news conference to announce the team was at a contractual impasse with restricted free agent defenseman Andrej Meszaros, The Hockey News has learned from a source close to the negotiations that Meszaros has agreed to a multi-year offer sheet with an average salary in excess of $5 million per season.
The team that has agreed to terms with the 22-year-old has yet to be confirmed.
When contacted by The Hockey News, Murray wouldn't confirm the report.
"I’ve heard rumors that that’s happening, but there’s no confirmation of that at this point," said Murray.
Earlier in the day at the press conference, Murray explained his negotiating position:
"I think Mez is a potentially good young defenseman who had a bit of an off-year this past year, and we've asked their camp to entertain that in what we're trying to do with him," Murray said. "I think we've made more than a fair offer and put ourselves in a position where he could come here and, with some help, we think he can be a top player.
"We need their camp to help us in that area as well. I've tried to get that message across, but to this point, we haven't gotten there."
The Ottawa Sun is reporting Meszaros was looking for a deal in the $4.5 million per year range while Ottawa had countered with an offer of $3.5 million per.
Meszaros has played three NHL seasons, suiting up in all 82 games in each campaign. He has a career 26 goals and 110 points and is a plus-24. In addition, the Czech native has played 34 NHL games, collecting two goals and seven points and a plus-1 rating.
He was drafted 23rd overall by the Senators in 2003.

While The Hockey News reported last night on its website that the Senators defenceman had agreed to terms on a contract "in excess of $5 million (all terms US)" per season with another team, two league sources insisted that no formal offer sheet has been filed with the NHL.
Sources told Sun Media last night that Lightning owners Oren Koules and Len Barrie have told the Senators they intend to pursue Meszaros if Ottawa doesn't deal him to the Bolts, but the indications are GM Bryan Murray doesn't feel the least bit threatened.
Based on a yearly salary of $5 million, the compensation for signing Meszaros would be a first-, second- and third-round pick.
Tampa doesn't have its 2009 third-round pick, having dealt to it the Penguins for the rights to Ryan Malone prior to the winger becoming an unrestricted free agent. Malone signed a long-term deal with the Lightning.
"Unless they're going to make a trade to acquire a draft pick, they don't have what it takes to sign him to an offer sheet," said a league executive. "Anything can happen, but nothing has happened yet and I'm not sure anything will."
If Tampa was to acquire a third-rounder and sign Meszaros to an offer sheet, the Senators could simply match the offer and retain the 22-year-old.

Chicago has assets general manager Dale Tallon would consider trading.
Veteran goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin is at the the top of the list.
Khabibulin has informed the Blackhawks he wants to play 60 games this season.
With newly signed Cristobal Huet soon to make his debut, that's unlikely to happen.
Also unlikely is a team willing to give up more than a draft pick or a prospect for Khabibulin who has one year left at 6.75 million dollars.
Tallon isn't desperate to move Khabibulin, but he is eager, and will patiently wait to see if an injury pops up around the league that may heighten interest.
The LA Kings are an obvious target based on a need for a goaltender, plus Khabibulin's salary would help the Kings move closer to the floor of the NHL's salary cap.
If no deal surfaces, Chicago who will soon have cap issues of their own and may have to place the former Stanley Cup champ on waivers. If he clears, Chicago would have the option to remove his cap hit by sending him to the American League, or they could recall him allowing another team to claim him at half the cost, leaving the Blackhawks on the hook for just over 3.3 Million dollars.
The renovations continue in Chicago and it appears the “Bulin wall” will soon be moved.

The Detroit News says the Wings will be over the salary cap when the re-sign Chelios and Quincey, who is a restricted free agent. That means they likely will sacrifice either Quincey or another young defenseman, Derek Meech, before the season begins.
Both young defensemen had figured in the team's plans.
Quincey, 23, was a Wings' fourth-round pick, 132nd overall, in 2003. He played 13 NHL games over the past three seasons, spending most of this time with the Wings' AHL Grand Rapids affiliate.
Meech, 24, was the team's seventh-round pick, 229th overall, in 2002. He played 32 games last season with the Wings. He, too, spent the bulk of last season at Grand Rapids.

Burke after Shanahan? that's quite interesting, despite recent speculation that Burke has told Selanne that he'll be able to sign with the team Sept. 11. what was interesting is that Teemu said Burke is trying to clear some cap room, but apparently with Sundin not making his decision yet, it's holding him up from making a deal, perhaps involving Schneider. my guess: I'd say there's a deal out there with Montreal.
but to potentially get Shanahan and Morrison and Selanne back, I guess the offense won't be that bad as it was last year.

Hockey can't start soon enough.
I've officially lost count on how many times this has been said in this thread.
and yet another day with no Ducks trade news to shred cap.
I think that's because this has to be the slowest offseason ever. It all started so nicely and then July 1 was pretty cool, but a week after that...not much.
T-Bag is going to have his jersey retired.

Vancouver, B.C. - The Vancouver Canucks announced today that they will host ‘Trevor Linden Night’ at General Motors Place on December 17th when they play the Edmonton Oilers. The night dedicated to the longtime Captain of the Canucks will be highlighted by a pre-game ceremony where Linden’s number 16 will be retired. Linden’s sweater will join Stan Smyl’s number 12 in the rafters at General Motors Place.
“Retiring a player’s sweater is one of the highest honours a club can pay to its most elite players and ambassadors,” said Chris Zimmerman, President and CEO, Canucks Sports & Entertainment. “Trevor embodies the qualities we strive for as an organization; character, hard working, commitment, generous and loyal. We are proud that his sweater will hang beside Stan Smyl’s at General Motors Place.”
“This is a tremendous honour and I am very grateful to the club,” said Linden. “To be drafted by the Canucks organization 20 years ago as an 18 year old and to now have my sweater retired is very humbling and rewarding.”
‘Trevor Linden Night’ will include a number of special guests and keynote speakers and will be an opportunity for Canucks fans to show their appreciation to Linden one more time. Linden’s number 16 will join Stan Smyl’s number 12 which was raised to the rafters at the Pacific Coliseum on November 3, 1991.
Linden, 38, retired as a Canuck on the 20th anniversary of his Draft day, June 11, 2008. He left the Canucks and the NHL after 19 seasons having recorded 867 career points (375-492-867) in 1382 regular season games with the Canucks, Montreal Canadiens, New York Islanders and Washington Capitals. In addition, Linden was a proven Playoff performer, in 124 Stanley Cup Playoff games, he recorded 99 points (34-65-99) and 104 penalty minutes. Of his 124 Playoff games, 118 came in a Canucks uniform, highlighted by his 25 points (12-13-25) in 24 games during the Canucks 1994 Stanley Cup run that concluded in a Game 7 versus the New York Rangers.
Linden completed his NHL career among the all-time League leaders in a number of statistical categories. His 1382 regular season games rank 32nd on the all-time list. Linden’s 375 career goals rank tied for 94th all-time (Butch Goring) and his 867 career points place him 99th in NHL history.
After joining the Canucks in 1988 from the Medicine Hat Tigers, Linden enjoyed immediate success, finishing runner-up for the 1989 Calder Trophy and being named The Hockey News Rookie-of-the-Year. In his first eight NHL seasons, Linden recorded 30 or more goals six times.
In 1991-92, Linden, just 21 years old at the time, was named the Canucks captain, becoming the youngest captain in the NHL. Linden wore the “C” as Canucks captain for seven seasons, the second longest tenure as captain in club history. After spending his first 10 NHL seasons in Vancouver, Linden went on to play parts of five seasons with the Canadiens, Islanders and Capitals before returning for six more years in a Canucks sweater after he was re-acquired in November of 2001.
During his 19 seasons, Linden was a two-time NHL All-Star (1990-91, 1991-92) and represented Team Canada at the 1998 Winter Olympic Games in Nagano, Japan. He retires as the Canucks all-time leader in games played (1140), assists (415) and is second in goals (318) and points (733). His 118 games, 34 goals, 61 assists and 95 points in the Playoffs are all club records.
Just as impressive as his on-ice accomplishments are, Linden’s work in the community has been tireless over the past 20 years. Most recently Linden was named the recipient of the NHL Foundation Player Award which is awarded annually to the National Hockey League player "who applies the core values of hockey – commitment, perseverance and teamwork – to enrich the lives of people in his community". In 1997, Linden was awarded the King Clancy Memorial Trophy which is given annually to the NHL player who best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice and who has made a significant humanitarian contribution in his community.

The Edmonton Oilers have signed defenceman Jordan Bendfeld to a three-year entry level contract.
The 6'2", 222 pound native of Leduc, Alberta was the Oilers fifth choice in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. He joins the Oilers after playing the last four seasons with the Medicine Hat Tigers.
Bendfeld completed his junior career with Medicine Hat last season, scoring 6-19-25 with 160 penalty minutes in 72 games with the Tigers. He played 225 career games for Medicine Hat from 2004-05 to 2007-08 and scored 17-50-67 with 392 penalty minutes.

Bendfeld played all 72 games in both the 2006-07 and 2007-08 seasons and missed only seven games during the 2004-05 campaign.
A member of Medicine Hat’s 2006-07 WHL championship team, he scored five assists in 23 post-season games and registered a league-leading 62 penalty minutes in helping the Tigers to a berth in the Memorial Cup tournament.

A newly formed Russian hockey league accused the NHL of poaching two of its players when the Los Angeles Kings agreed to terms with two draft prospects last week.
As a result, the Continental Hockey League (KHL), announced Thursday that it was no longer obligated to abide by a moratorium reached in July, when the leagues agreed against signing players that were under contract.
In a news release, the KHL said the NHL violated that agreement when the Kings signed 2008 second-round draft pick, defenceman Vjateslav Voinov, and 2008 fifth-round pick, centre Andrei Loktionov (http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/teams/players/bio/?id=6795), on Aug. 27. The KHL said Voinov is currently under contract with Chelyabinsk while Loktionov is under contract with Yaroslavl.
NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly disputed the KHL's claims in an e-mail sent to The Associated Press. Daly said the league approved both contracts "on the basis of evidence that the two players were free of contractual obligations elsewhere.
"The NHL is not in violation of any agreement with the KHL, nor are we in violation of our long-standing policy to respect the contracts of other leagues."
This is the latest dispute to arise between the leagues since the KHL, which is scheduled to begin play this month, was formed last spring to succeed the former Russian Super League.
The Predators suspended forward Alexander Radulov (http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/teams/players/bio/?id=4759) without pay after he broke his contract with Nashville to sign with a KHL team. Radulov, the Predators third-leading scorer last season, had one year left on his contract.
KHL president Alexander Medvedev has maintained that Radulov's signing was legal because it occurred before the two leagues reached a signing moratorium.
Medvedev is scheduled to meet Saturday with International Ice Hockey Federation officials, including president Rene Fasel, in Zurich to discuss his league's dispute with the NHL.
Daly said the NHL is not involved in those meetings.
Daly still doesn't consider the KHL a major concern, which is how he referred to the upstart league at the NHL draft in June.
"Of course we're disappointed with some of the things hat have happened since the entry draft but, no, I don't think I would change my answer today, that we don't consider the KHL to be a major concern," Daly said.

I guess the guys who have paid their dues can do whatever they want. And in the end I guess if they wait, the team doesn't have to pay them as much and they can wait to see if it's worth playing (if the team isn't going to the playoffs, then why play).
There's probably more that can be listed, but I think those are fairly key.

Sources tell TSN Mats Sundin and his representatives JP Barry and Claes Elefalk met with Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Cliff Fletcher Friday morning. Joe Nieuwendyk, recently hired as Fletcher's assistant was also involved in the discussions.
Sources say Fletcher outlined his plan for the team this season and assured Sundin that Toronto will keep the door open for the 37-year-old captain in the event he decides to resume his career.
Sundin, who is in town for the inaugural Festival Cup charity hockey game at Air Canada Centre, continues to mull over his future plans as NHL training camp approaches.
"Whatever happens to me, whether I'm not going to play tomorrow or whatever, I know Toronto's always the team in my heart," Sundin said Thursday. "When I retire, whenever that happens, that's not going to change."
As many as six teams have expressed interest in Sundin's services, including the Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens, Vancouver Canucks and New York Rangers.
The unrestricted free agent said he was flattered by the suitors over the summer, and added that he cherished the time he spent in Toronto. The Leafs' most recent captain explained that no matter what happens, he'll always remain in close ties with the city.
"This is the best hockey town to play in, in the world," Sundin added. "Right now, the Toronto Maple Leafs don't have the best hockey team in the world. The fans in Toronto certainly deserve to have a team that competes for the Stanley Cup every year."
Last season, Sundin enjoyed one of his best seasons, finishing with 32 goals and 46 assists for 78 points in 74 games and leading Toronto in scoring for the fourth straight year.

the idea of the NHL going to Europe is as retarded as David Stern wanting to expand the NBA globally -- I understand the market appeal, but I just can't see it working especially with travel schedules. it would be a mess.
shdaow
09-12-2008, 08:02 PM
I doubt we have any sort of inter-continent expansion until intercontinental travel becomes more efficient (i.e. Faster and cheaper). Not only for travel, but how about players with families? Could you imagine getting shipped from Florida to Russia? It's a significant move, transferring from one culture to another, which would cause a lot of stress on a family. They also mentioned it on TSN, the fans abroad won't be willing to pay as much for tickets (well, except for Major cities like Moscow). If you expand into Europe, you have to do it with a significant number of teams, and I don't see that being profitable.
I think if the NHL wants to expand into Europe, they should try starting some sort of developmental league (Yes, I can sense the shudders of NFL Europe) to compliment the AHL. It would be a good way to ease European prospects into the American game, making them play on North American ice while still being close to home. Tickets wouldn't be as expensive, and players from the NHL would be given the option of being assigned to the European or North American farm team if they're ever sent down.
wacker

I think it would be cool to see Euro expansion but I would not trust the NHL to do it properly, they would no doubt fuck something up.
merlin13
09-13-2008, 09:03 AM
Why expand to Europe? They, the NHL, need to improve on the product here first. I mean really, is the NHL even in the top five as far as popularity among the major sports in North America. The Nhl has a lot of European players on active rosters now and thats what they work for. To play in an elite league and make obscene amounts of money. You only hear of players going back to Europe For tournaments, i.e. the Olympics, or when they are close to calling it quits.

Teemu Selanne has agreed to a two-year contract with the Ducks.
"This is the only place I wanted to play," Selanne said. "We have great owners, great fans and a chance to win again. This team is hungry and ready to go." Anaheim needed to adjust their salary situation to re-sign the veteran winger, so they moved defenseman Mathieu Schneider to Atlanta on Friday. Selanne contributed 12 goals and 23 points in 26 games for the Ducks after joining the team in February. He should knock on the 80-point plateau with a full season of play. Sep. 28 - 5:59 pm et

Luongo named Canuckle's Captain... can't wear C (http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/2008/09/30/luongo_canucks_captain/)
I don't see why the NHL prohibits him from wearing the C. Yes, he has to skate ALL the way from his goal to argue a call, but seriously, how is that so much of an issue?? I wonder if he takes the ceremonious face-offs.

the Leafs tried to acquire Mathieu and Bobby Ryan (http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=251254&lid=headline&lpos=secStory_nhl) for a 2009 protected 1st round pick + 2 prospects.
had the pick been unprotected, I would of ran like a bandit with that deal. but in Toronto's perspective, why on earth would you offer such a deal? you're a rebuilding franchise, and by doing this move, you're basically setting yourselves back even though Ryan will be a solid NHL player.

I wouldn't want Schneider, but since the pick is protected, we're essentially getting a Top 5 pick who's developed rather than a Bottom 25 (or what ever the protection) who is more of a risk. It would hinge on what the other two prospects were.

Because it is Toronto and we always make the dumb moves! I think they were thinking of flipping Mathieu for another prospect but I do not think they really thought this move through.

oh sure, the two prospects do matter, but if Burke is dealing Ryan, he would want that 1st round pick to be unprotected seeing Ryan was drafted #2 behind Crosby in the '05 draft. now I'm sure there's conspiracy talk that if Burke did this trade, it's a possible sign he's setting himself up to bolt Anaheim and head for Toronto.
in other news, the Ducks dealt O'Donnell to the Kings for a conditional '09 pick.
